I want to purchase my first rifle and i'd like it to be a.308 or a 7.62x51 could you k/ommandos give me your knowledge
>>
Ok I'll bite.

We need some information from you first. What country do live in? Whate state if US? What's the budget? What's the intended use? Do you want a manual or semi automatic platform?

Too many factors. Need more input!
>>
>>31957634
>7.62x51
>.308

You know that those are virtually the same thing right?

Intended use Hunting, Property Defense
Semi-automatic Platform
>>
>>31957725
Yeah i did but i was unsure if they could be fired from the same firearm interchangeably so it was just to be safe
>>
>>31957725
>virtually the same thing
>is okay with either
I don't see the problem here. Would you like to descend into pedantry?

>.308

You can chat with the battle rifle /k/ommandos here >>31922425

But you could go:
>M1A
>G3
>FAL
>SCAR

Etc.
>>
>>31957634
There's nothing wrong with 308 but I mean, be prepared to spend a lot if this is your first rifle. You should work on your marksmanship fundamentals and that will be spendy with 308. Just realize what you're getting into.
>>
>>31957807
My grandfather was a D.C. swat sniper and a marine he's been my mentor for a long time. I've seen the money he's poured into rifles and scopes. I'm prepared to spend the money who wouldn't want a small arsenal at their disposal

I assume these questions don't deserve their own thread so

>also no funs
>New Jersey
>$800 max
>just for shooting, fun
>Handgun

I've been looking into FNXs online. Store not too far away is selling a .45 but I don't know if it's appropriate/accessible for my first gun. There's almost no carry here anyways so size really isn't a factor.
>>
>>31957826
Oh I mean the spending would be feeding the gun, not on the gun itself. Check out the prices of 308/7.62x51 in your area and figure out how much you can afford to shoot in a month. If you can't do at the very least 600-800 rds up front and then 100rds/month after I'd recommend looking at a less spendy caliber. Marksmanship is a perishable skill, you can lose your touch if you don't get regular practice.
>>
>>31957634
I feel this is a poor caliber choice for a first rifle
>>
>AR-10
>PTR-91 / HK91
>FN FAL Clone
>SCAR
>M1A
>Kel-Tec RFB if you like impossible to find bullpup vaporware
>Vepr or Saiga in .308 if you're feeling saucy and enjoy expensive, uncommon magazines.
>A piston style AR-10 variant like an LWRC REPR, HK MR762 or a Ruger SR-762
That's literally all I can think of, bud.
>>
>>31957729
Thank you. Your location has no restrictions, so yay! If we limit it to 308/7.62x51 (nearly the same round) and semi auto a list takes shape:

First group are the "battle rifles" . Things that used to be military but really aren't anymore. Look at the fn fal (dsarms), the G3 family (hk91 and others), and the m14/m1a (Springfield armory, Fulton). These rifles tend to be solid, less expensive, heavier, and slightly less accurate than the next groups.

Next we have the AR10/sr25 platform. Basically a scaled up AR 15 platform that doesn't have a single specification. Prebuilts from places like dpms, knight armaments, and armalite. Tons more read watch there... real rabbit hole.

Then there's the oddballs. FN SCAR H: Military, light, accurate, expensive. Browning BLR: hunting, limited mag size. Vepr: AK styled Russian import.

I'm sure I'm missing some. Do your read watch on the things I mentioned and find your favorite that meets whatever criteria you set. Have fun.

If youre looking at that price range, you should look into the sig P320. Its an excellent trigger and proven mechanism, great sights out of the box. I have found them here in Texas for around $550
>>
>>31957732

5.56x45mm NATO and .223 are not identical. 7.62x51mm NATO and .308 are AFAIK.
>>
>>31957878
>7.62x51mm NATO and .308 are AFAIK.
Very close but no. It's the inverse of .223/5.56; .308 Win is higher pressure than 7.62x51. Could you get away with shooting .308 in a gun chambered specifically (e.g. engraved) 7.62x51? Yeah, probably, but I personally wouldn't do it.
>>
>>31957891

Ah yes, thank you. That was it, the pressure. And with 5.56 and .223 it was minimal differences in cartridge size IIRC. I also remembered something about FN FALs being both produced in metric and imperial measurements, leading to incompatibility with magazines.
>>
>>31957997
Pressure is not measured the same. Look up EPVAT testing. Do not hesitate to shoot a .308 through a 7.62 or vice versa. None of our 7.62s that I've seen traditionally tested (at the port instead of the chamber) have gone over SAAMI specs

Makes sense, I'd not expect someone to design practically interchangeable cartridges if they could blow up the not intended firearm if used therein.

>>31957826
I agree with >>31957844

You might want to get something along the lines of 5.56 or 7.62x39 to practice in till you're ready to move up to .308

But if money isn't an issue you could just start with .308, though it will cost a bit to buy ammo and shoot, leading to you shooting less and not getting as much practice.
>>
I would wait and see if imports will be legal again and get yourself an FAL or ditch 308 and get an m1 garand if surplus us weapons are made legal to sell.
>>
>>31957794
Or a Vepr in .308 if he really wanted to have multiple cocks in his ass and mouth.
>>
>>31957872
What this guy said. But even if your budget is $3k, I wouldn't recommend blowing the whole budget on something like a scar, especially if it's your first rifle. Shooting is an expensive hobby, and once you get the bug, you'll want more. Save some to put towards good optics, ammo, mags, ext. Hell with a $3k budget, you good buy a couple rifles/pistols and still have money left for ammo
>>
>>31957891
>get away with shooting .308 in a gun chambered specifically (e.g. engraved) 7.62x51?

Other way around is fine. Shoot 7.62x51 in a rifle that can take .308 and gun will be happy. You can always switch up to .308 for a bit more range, better trajectory, etc. if you want.
