Yes.

You'll accidentally hit the wall, cut cleanly through like hot katana through butter, then hit some wires and electrocute yourself.

Better to give it to your enemy. Let their strength be their greatest weakness.

Such is way of samurai.

Nah. Still a weapon. Which is useful for home defence. Are there literally dozens of better options? Yes. A katana would still make someone leak, though a shorter sword may be advisable in the confines of a home.

>Is a katana a ridiculous home defence weapon?
Yes. That being said, I own a Highlander replica sword. It is a cheap, $80 piece of shit, but I just wanted one, call me autistic. I own guns, so I would never use it for home defense. But if I didn't own guns, I would not hesitate to gut someone with it, like you would with a bayonet. My house is tiny with narrow hallways. Good luck getting out of the way. Unless you have a gun, you are getting 3 feet of steel through your torso.

Not really. The katana is shorter than most two-handers (it really is basically a 1-handed sword with a long grip) so it is decent for use inside your average non-Japanese house. The blade's viability for stabbing isn't such a big issue when almost no one is invading your house in any sort of armor.
>>
>>31956721

nah, the "behind the door stab" was better :)

>>
>>31956812
>>31956901
Yet the long sword was usually not permitted inside other houses but your own, that's why they mainly used the wakizashi for indoor fighting (because that's what you'll always have).
Most japanese swords weren't long enough to be much of an impediment indoors, besides, they are techniques specifically about using a katana in that scenario (home defense I mean).
None is especially better than the other in that regard.
>>
>>31956382
anything that can make you defeat opponent easier is a good defense weapon
>>
>>31956382
It is. If you're in a noguns place and aren't allowed to own firearms for home defence, look at what was popular in WW1.

They didn't use swords of any type, even if officers got them. They used sharpened shovels (the short infantry ones, not snow shovels of course), maces, and hatchets. Swords are too long, pikes and lances are worse (and they can get stuck and snap, like bayonets on rifles), so get something that worked fine to kill trained soldiers.
>>
>>31956382
Ridiculous, no. Dildo-chucks, that's ridiculous tier.
A katana isn't a good choice, though. Slashing weapons take a lot of space to use effectively. If you live in a loft and there's nothing but space, you can do that (no surprise, that's how Japanese houses are).

If you really want a blade, choose one better suited to stabbing. Otherwise, go with a shorter edge like a wakizashi, which will need less space.
>>
>>31957087
>They didn't use swords of any type, even if officers got them.
The only swords non cavalry officers bought (in the anglosphere at least) by the time of the great war were dress swords. a much better comparison would be the fuckhuge bayonets in common use at the time.
>>
>>31956382
Better than nothing
>>
>>31957098
Except a Katana is a of a cut and thrust sword. it's suitable for both. By design it's a thick and stiff as fuck blade because pre industrial jap metal was poor at flexing so they made it thick enough to compensate. with modern mono steels, it only got stiffer.
>>
>>31956698
Did you post the wrong video? There's nothing about fighting burglars in this one. A lot about fighting buhglaws, though.
>>
>>31957124
>with modern mono steels, it only got stiffer.

Going from pure iron to an old bloomery steel to modern mono steel to cast iron will have basically no effect whatsoever on the stiffness (E/Young's modulus and G/bulk modulus). Any heat treatment will likewise do basically nothing to the stiffness.

This is then further masked by the fact that the final stiffness of an item depends very heavily on the geometry, specifically the thickness (for a rectangular cross section stiffness scales with the cube of the thickness).

As for Japanese steel, I have seen nothign really to suggest it was of relatively poor quality compared to the bulk of other such pre-modern steels (with the line for "modern" probably being drawn in the late 19th century at the earliest, anywhere).

>>
No.
There's literally NO reason to own one. People more likely will be disgusted than impressed when they see one.
>>
Get a spear you casual. Swinging blades is for outside.
>>
>>31957142

buhglaws, yeah, that's what I meant.
>>
>>31956382
Kinda. In close quarters a sword in general has some minor advantages over guns. Note, minor.

The katana is also a primarily slashing weapon making it more effective against unarmored opponents like thieves.

But seriously? I'd only use a sword if I can't reload in time. A crossbow is generally a better option if only because of how ridiculously easy they are to make.
>>
>>31957337
I don't think anyone is trying to impress a burglar though...

If you have massive rooms and corridors it would be ok, but most people don't.

Better to use a yari or naginata, you have more reach and it's a thrusting weapon so you can just hole up in a corridor chokepoint.

Of course if they have a gun you're fucked either way lol.
>>
>>31964698
>If you have massive rooms and corridors it would be ok
>then suggests weapons that are useless in corridors if your opponent gets with your reach, which is a very real threat.

swords were the pre gunpowder lone wielder's indoor weapons of choice for a reason
>>
>>31961844
>longsword
>indoors
no, longsword fencing is fun and can seriously fuck someone up in a theoretical defense situation but you need space.
I'd rather go with a rapier to thrust or a sidesword/broadsword/saber since they're shorter and more practical in hallways.
As other anons recommended, revolver+saber is best
>>
>>31956382
A katana is such overkill. No one needs to be able to teleport behind their target and effortlessly slice them into 1000 pieces.

Such power shouldn't even be available to the public, we need to ban assault katanas.

This is horrible news....
>>
>>31961905
Oh, by stabbing ability I meant the shape of the blade. The katana's relatively blunt tip and off-center position to the center line means it is definitely harder to thrust into someone with it than a sword with a spear tip. However, almost no one who needs to break into a house for cash will have any sort of armor beyond thick winter clothing, so a katana should still be able to skewer them just fine.

A dagger will have problems reaching someone who is behind furniture like a couch. The katana really isn't all that long and Nip houses are tiny. The only time its length will be a problem is in apartments.

Hence how you could cut into a wall with a katana... but as the old saying goes, don't bring a knife to a gunfight.

He clearly forgot what it meant to be a warrior. he lost his desire for death, so the kami took his desire for life.

The fool should have known better than to try the toyota honda hentai river when he wasn't strong enough. I weep, for even in death, he did not forget that his soul was in the blade.
>>
>>31965439
Any one-handed sword will do.

The thing is, if you are defending your home at night you may want to have one hand free in order to manipulate things, herd family members and carry a light source. The same things are considered when choosing a handgun over a long arm for HD.

We all know Maglites are pretty tough. They could work as both a torch and a club and a parrying tool all in one, used with an arming sword in the other hand.
>>
I dunno OP. You'll think you will have the advantage against your home invader until he pulls out a Scottish Claymore and shatters your glorious Nippon Steel with a single swing.
>>
