Which is the better hunting cartridge?
>>
>>31956273
With the proper load both will take down deer woth the same rate at 200ish yards (I know it can go further but I wouldn't go there unless I absolutely had to) still prefer full cartridges like .308 though
>>
>>31956287
Do people really hunt deer with 5.56? I'm pretty sure OP refers to humans. He also implies ak vs m16.
>m16 wins
>>
>>31956296
>Do people really hunt deer with 5.56?
Why not? Small deer are well within its capabilities. Any bigger ones and the 7.62 is better.
>>
>>31956273
5.56 is a varmint caliber, ok for coyotes and such. 7.62x39 is more or less equal to .30-30 and can be used to hunt dears and hogs.
>>
>>31956306
I thought .30 caliber slugs were the defacto standard for anything bigger than coyotes.
>>
>>31956296
.223 started as a hunting cartridge, like I said I prefer .308 or some other non intermediate round but plenty of people take deer with one shot of .223 though for things like moose I don't think you are in a much better place with x39

.22 isnt legal for hunting deer in many states,.30 on the other hand.
>>
>>31956315
Could be, I don't know about Burgerland.
5.56 is well capable of taking down small deer, wolves, coyotes and everything of that size and below. Completely legal to hunt those animals with it round here as well.
>>
>>31956296
>>31956306
Consider 5.56's ancestor, .222 rem.
People have used it for decades as a youth/light deer rifle.
It's very capable at close ranges against small deer
>>
>>31956327
Yeah thats was I was saying, I was pretty sure 223 was for small games exclusively.>>31956316

I know you can't hear sarcastic tones over the net but come on now.
>>
>>31956313
7.62x39 is like the lightest-loaded .30-30. Fancy lightweight supersonic .300 Blackout is like standard 7.62x39 in energy only. All of them suck compared to a 150+gr .308, or a 12 gauge slug. Of course, some people hunt deer with .30 Carbines, 1911s, 30lb bows, and even .22LRs, so I guess if you've got the shot placement and the animal doesn't suffer too long then it's okay.

I wouldn't.
>>
>>31956315
Nah, .30-30 (not ".30-30 equivalents") and .243 are really the entry level for deer calibers. Everything else is just mallninjas fucking around.

Maybe in America. What's your smallest species of deer?

>>31956396
What if there's two boars?
>>
>>31956398
>What if there's two boars?
Half dead infected boars are better than healthy breeding ones. I use 64 grain .223 to shoot at boar for the shoot and release program. Anybody eating wild boar in America are akin to eating gar, carp, or pigeon. They are meant to be exterminated. As soon as we treat them like a game species the hunting laws will follow suit.
>>
i've hunted many deer growing up in michigan and most people in the far north in the swaps use winchester 30/30s, in the farm land weapons like 30-06 and 25-06 or even 6mm are used because of the high velocity of the cartridge is less likely to fragment a massive amount and penetrate bone better.

Blacktailed deer, I think, but deer in the South and Southeast tend to be smaller because they live in the woods and not the fields. I still wouldn't shoot them with anything less than a .30-30 or .243. Also, boars don't attack in packs.

This deer in this pic was shot with a 150gr .308 JSP two weeks prior.

Axis deer are the best deer to shoot in Texas. They eat good no matter the season. I'm thinking I'll thaw out some axis back strap cutlets for supper tonight.

At least you can use normal AR mags and bolts and there are available subsonic loadings (which of course give .45LC ballistics, but are quieter than a suppressed 9mm). .300BLK only really shines if you've got a suppressor and possibly a short barrel.

>>
>>31956492
For the same reason they came out with the Mini-6.8 and discontinued the 10/22 Magnums, semi-auto .44 Mag carbine, and are now set to discontinue the 77/22, 77/17, 77/357, and 77/44? (they are really fuckin stupid)
>>
>>31956505
How do they keep making profit though? How do they do it? Remington expanded their shotgun market for two years and quality control became so shit by 2012 nobody trusted them anymore. But everyday people walk into the store I work in and buy AR-556's and 10/22's and are very pleased. And the first LCP was a shit show as well.
Is cancelling production within six months enough to tempt brand buyers but not risk people realizing what they are getting for the money?
>>
>>31956273
What you can do and should do are sometimes different.
Just because you can take game with something, doesn't mean it's a good choice, just get a .243, .25-06, .270, 7mm mag, .308, .30-06, 30-30, 300wm, .338 fed, .338wm
>>
>>31956398
>>31956434
Sitka blacktail are the smallest.
Columbia blacktail are a little bigger on average than white tail.
>>
If we're talking four legged animals, 7.62x39 within 100y. .223 if you need to go past that out to 200y.

All other things being equal, anything based on the .308 or .30-06 cartridges is going to result in a shorter run time and larger blod trail just by way of more velocity and/or mass.
>>
>>31956434

I'm no hunter but that is strange
>>
>>31956398
>smallest deer
Key Deer in Florida.
>>
>>31956296
>both are fine
>shot placement
I've butchered deer taken with 223, it's fine and does a lot of damage.
The problem is the dildos I know shooting deer with ar-15s tend to shoot them all over. They're more likely to shoot at a running deer with muh semi auto instead of waiting for a good carefully aimed shot like I do with my muzzleloader. Seems like they always hit the rear legs before the killing shot takes it down.
>>
Could 7.62x39 take a black bear? What about brown bear? Elk?
>>
>>31957439
Just like deer, neither of these cartridges are ideal.
Could it? Sure.
>>
>>31957358
>The problem is the dildos I know shooting deer with ar-15s tend to shoot them all over.

I was always told thats the difference between "hunting" and "shooting animals"

I cringe knowing that somewhere out there a deer is going to get hit six times with a .22LR, or with a 9mm RIP round, or with some kind of armor piercing milspec bullhit
>>
>>31956296
The 5.56 was derived from the 222...a hunting round.
>>31956273
OP, 5.56 and x39 are perfectly adequate cartridges for hogs and deer. 556 has the edge because it has access to quality ammunition while x39 doesn't. Most american x39 loadings manage to fuck up its even shittier accuracy.

I've hunted plenty of hogs and deer with both calibers. I've never needed more than one shot.

Problem arises with the jackasses that take shots at running deer
>>
>>31956336
That's what happens when libtarded state legislators restrict hunting rounds by bullet diameter instead of anything more sensible. You can legally hunt elk and mountain lions with a Makarov in Washington, but god forbid you use 5.56 on a little blacktail deer.
>>
>>31956537
>How do they keep making profit though? How do they do it?
Wheelguns, durrguns (their Ruger American is basically a competitor to the Savage Axis, and of course the GSR), Mini-14s in cuckstates, 10/22s, .22lr pistols, and striker pistols.

>>
>>31956273
When it comes to hunting cartridges, nobody knows them best than me. You know, these cartridges are in very bad shape. Even China has been making better hunting cartridges than us. It's terrible. And don't get me wrong, I love China, but they're definitely outsmarting us. Sad! But the hunting cartridges are coming back, and they're coming back stronger and better than ever before, believe me. *sniff*

Anything bigger than a .22 on that list is overkill for rabbits. Especially the .243 and .257. .30-06 seems like it would be overkill on a pronghorn as well.

How the hell did they come up with the .30-06 being less powerful than the .308?
>>
>>31958327
I'm assuming because .30-06 is also a hunting shotgun round?

>>
7.62x39 is better. But I wouldn't use anything less than a 30-30, and that still makes me uncomfortable at any distance. And no, "almost" 30-30 isn't 30-30. Yeah, you'll take down most deer with it, but why risk it? Why use an inferior deer caliber when there's better deer calibers literally everywhere?

I've never had a deer go more than 10 steps and I plan to keep it that way. So slugs, .308 or comparable, or .50 muzzleloader for me.
>>
>>31958606
>almost" 30-30 isn't 30-30
It's not even "almost" 30-30. There's a pretty significant difference.
>>
>>31958606
I'd also use 12gauge slugs or .44mag within about 150 yards.
>>
>>31958621
I know I just hear that "almost 30-30" bullshit all the time, people seriously need to go look at some ballistics charts.

>>31958635
Yeah for sure, there's good calibers out there that drop off pretty significantly at longer ranges. But in some places the longest shot you're going to ever take is less than 100 yards, so why not use those calibers. I've gotten more deer with my scoped 870 with a rifled barrel than anything else.

C. Daniel Myers ([email protected]) wrote:
: I keep hearing how .308 Win is more accurate than .30-06 Springfield.
: Is this true?

Yes it is true. The .308's improved accuracy is why the NRA reduced the
scoring ring sizes on highpower competiton 200 and 300 yard targets in 1966.
And the 1000-yard target's scoring ring sizes were made smaller in 1971.

Reasons why the .308 Win. is more accurate than the .30-06 are primarily
due to its smaller (lighter weight) powder charge:

* Being the same diameter, but shorter in length, it ignites and burns
more uniformly. This results in smaller velocity spreads which means
vertical shot stringing is smaller. Tests in the early 1960s showed
the .308s cut vertical group size about in half over the .30-06.

* As the smaller charge causes the front slope of the pressure curve to
not rise as fast, the bullet is pushed more gently into the throat/leade.
This causes less bullet deformation which results in the bullet being
less unbalanced as it leaves the barrel. More balanced bullets shoot
more accurately than less balanced ones.

* Another reason is barrel twist. .30-06 barrels standardized on a 1:10
twist in the early 1900s. That is way too fast for best accuracy with
150 to 180 grain bullets they mostly used. A 1:12 twist would have been
much better but folks didn't understand that at the time. With the .308
having 1:12 or 1:11 twists, their slower-velocity bullets were perfectly
stabilized and they shot smaller groups. Only with 200-grain bullets
did the .30-06 hold its own, but they had to shot with maximum charges
and that meant recoil started getting difficult to consistantly manage.

The best 600-yard groups competition .30-06es got in the 1960s was about
5 to 6 inches for twenty shots. The .308 Win. cut that in half
