Can we get some revolver love going? My brother is getting a clone of the SAA and I want to see what y'all have.
Pic related is the only revolver I have, a Cap and Ball 1851 Navy.
bumping with two images.

What revolver is that? Looks like its chambered in .45-70
I'm thinking of getting a Dragoon
Can you guys give me your thoughts and some general information about them? I'm thinking about grabbing an Uberti.
>>31955570
I've heard people say that if you want a dragoon just get a walker. I like uberti though. Honestly a tier above pietta. If you're set on a dragoon, I think the third generation is the best.

>looks like its 45/70

What gave it away sherlock?
>>31955666
Gee Satan I only gave the photo a cursory glance. Thanks for setting me straight though.
>>31955635
Why do they say that?
>>31955720
People usually get a dragoon to avoid the walkers loading lever failure. The dragoon, unlike future colt cap and ball revolvers is still prone to such failures so it's better in their eyes to go with a revolver that can accept 60 grains of black powder versus the 50 of the dragoon I think.
Honestly the dragoon is more conventionally laid out than the walker is. It doesn't use that strange main spring like the walker does. And while there is potential for the loading lever to drop, it's far more sturdy than the Walkers loading lever.

Am I the only person around that finds most case hardening sort of.. "on the nose" ?
It's a little much, and I'd prefer my guns without it if I could help it, barring certain exceptions.
>>31961137
>"on the nose"
I'm not sure what that means in this context
>>31961137
I didn't used to care for it, but I've come to appreciate it in some instances. S&W hammers and triggers, for example. I don't care for those fully color-case hardened M1911's, though.
>>31961158
I intended it to mean sort of, uh, "trying to look good but going way too far and doing it wrong".
Like a gold diamond-encrusted grill that a rapper might buy, or something.
It is objectively good in some regards, but it's attempting to be classy in a certain sense, but accidentally achieving the opposite.
>>31961133

>>31961200
Damn
What caliber is that thing? .38?
>>31961209
No idea! Came with them from store. Didnt realize they werent the original grips when I bought it. No markings on them.

Should I get an SAA clone or a ruger blackhawk?
>>31961537
I'd like to dump some of my other guns and buy a few additional BH's. I want a convertible 9/.357, plus I wouldn't mind picking up a Super Blackhawk.

It was inevitable. This one's a second series, made in February, 1948.

Now that our uncertainty years are over sure why not? What is the best revolver for target shooting and accuracy?
>>31954851
From the thumb nail it looks like that sofa chair was custom designed with a slot specifically for that revolver
>>31962302
I love you, Drake.
I ordered an 1851 Navy London the other day, from Uberti, the same one I think you own. Have you had any issues with it? Also, which accessories do you use, such as the powder flask/capper etc. Never owned BP before.
>>31962679
I use Hornady 0.375" lead balls, Goex blackpowder, CCI #11 or Remington #10 caps, .38 caliber 'Wonder Wads' (or whatever pre-lubricated wads I can find) and an adjustable Pedersoli flask.
The only issue I've experienced is that the US-made caps don't always fit the Italian nipples very well. Pinch the skirt of the cap before pressing it on to avoid one slipping loose and jamming the action. I like to use a small wooden dowel to press the caps on rather than a fancier capper. I find it's a bit easier.
Brief question, anyone ever used a Ruger Blackhawk
thought about getting one in .357, the .45 Colt is cool but .357/.38 is cheaper; I'm having trouble deciding between it and the Vaquero.
Only main advantage I see is he adjustable sights and a few hundred dollars difference but I want to know if I'm missing out.
>>31954851
>patiently waits for the two other anons with a DW to show up

I got the .357/9mm convertible one, pretty happy with it.

>>31960873<---this is me
its a 9mm/.357mag convertible & its awesome
..great fun. dont have experience with the vaquero, however
>>31963185
The Vaquero is just a Blackhawk without adjustable sights. It also has some sort of magical pawl that makes it easier to reload.
Personally I'd go for the Blackhawk over the Vaquero unless you're really into the Vaquero look or you wan to shoot SASS or similar matches where reloading speed becomes an issue.

Is BP substitute fine to use? It might be hard for me to find real BP around here.
Do you think cabelas will have all this stuff or should I order it online?
>>31963379
Things like Pyrodex are quite a bit more corrosive but meter the same.
any loose BP substitute should be good but I would stay away from the white powders like Jim Shockey's. Stuff is corrosive, quite hygroscopic, and in my experience incredibly variable. Ended up just burning 2 pounds of it after trying to sight in a rifle.

Appreciate the help guys, had it in the back of
my mind o go with the Blackhawk initially.
as nice as the Vaquero, I'm not doing SASS and it's not really worth the additional cash
so I guess it's the Blackhawk for me.
I've been looking to get a Smith and Wesson Model 10 but none are in my area. What's a good price for one in good condition? I also want to be able to shoot .38 + P but I've been reading that some of the ones produced prior to it being stamped Model 10 instead of Military and Police are not safe with hot loads.
>>31963379
I've had limited experience with the substitutes, the ones I've tried were ascorbic acid based so they were quite hygroscopic. Because of this they tended to clump up and meter poorly from flasks. They ignited reliably but I had to use a volumetric measure to ensure I was getting a proper charge. From my flask they would meter between 10-13 grains from a 15 grain nozzle.
I've had great luck with this stuff, but it's hard to find these days.

>>31963671
Alright, I'll look into finding some. I think there was one place that had it when I was thinking of buying a Pedersoli flintlock.
If you don't mind me asking, where do you store your BP? Is it something you should put a lot of consideration into?
>>31964145
Keep the container tightly closed and store it in a cool, dry area. I just keep mine on a shelf in a closet. I prefer not to keep it with my smokeless powders, though.

>>31961107
Beautiful. Case hardening lacks luster though.
>>31962378
Might as well be. I love that revolver so much I carry it in my hand at home.
>>31962342
There's a target model of the 1858 Remington that might be up your alley.
>>31965775
That's some pretty brass you got there. You don't shoot it often or do you just polish it up? Mine has stains on the brass from a lot of use.
>>31966254
Those black powder revolvers aren't going to hurt you unless you empty smokeless powder into the cylinder. Black powder has a different pressure curve so I wouldn't worry about using what it's designed to use, even if you overload it with black. Just use proper fitting caps and proper sized balls.
Made in 1900. I still have the original grips...in the safe somewhere., because I used to finger fuck and shoot it quite a bit.
