So as we all probably know, Trump has won the election. One of the questions we have to wonder is what will happen with our military spending?

First and foremost, his plan is to end sequestration, or at least raise the spending caps.

>Army

Trump is calling for an end-strength of 540,000 active duty troops, and a corresponding increase from 31 active brigade combat teams to 40.

>Navy

He's calling for an increase to 350 ships. This is a pretty long-term goal, so once started it'd have to be continued by whoever comes in after him. He's also calling for the modernization of all of the Tico cruisers.

>Marine Corps

An increase to 240,000 personnel, and an increase to 36 active-duty infantry battalions.

>Air Force

Increasing the number of fighter aircraft to at least 1,200. This one actually wouldn't be that hard.

Mostly he only specified personnel levels and not so much procurement. It's also likely that with increased spending we may see a more robust modernization. We may see all Burkes taken to the latest Aegis standard for instance, which would quickly bring us to the required number of BMD ships. This would support his stated desired for a "state-of-the-art missile defense system", though he was more likely referring to programs like GMD.

So overall we're likely to see a return to pre-BCA military spending levels. Defense stocks are already rising like fucking crazy over this, both nationally and internationally.

http://breakingdefense.com/2016/11/trumps-pentagon-trumps-world-defense-stocks-soar/

>One of the more interesting aspects of the trifecta sweep of White House, Senate and House is that it appears to be good tidings for the defense industry. Shares of Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman were up at least 5 percent this morning. Raytheon was up 7.6 percent while the overall stock market doodled along in slightly positive territory. In Europe, BAE Systems, Cobham and French defense company Thales rose substantially.

So overall the next 4 years, and possibly 8 years, should be good times, at least for the defense industry.

I don't think we need more military spending. The deficit needs to be fixed.
>>
>>31951768

> Cuts taxes and income by almost half a trillion dollars

> increase military spending by at least 200 billion dollars

> Country already running a 600 billion deficit

He's building a budget hole and making future Americans pay for it.
>>
>>31951925
>implying this isn't exactly why Republicans keep winning elections
>>
>>31951651
A "good time" for the defense industry, which provides practically no benefit to anyone that's not in the military. More money out of my pocket going to some corporate suits making boondoggles when we're not even at war.
great

I think the first thing Trump needs to do, is stop the bleeding of good service members from the service.

a pay raise for E4-E7.

then improve standard of living for enlisted. abolish barracks, and build 1 bedroom apartments in hi rise towers on base. all soldiers regardless of rank, that are single or married with no children, get one of these apartments. apartments will have full kitchen, laundry, full bath, bedroom, closets, etc. all soldiers will be places on separate rations, aka BAS. DFACs reduced to one per base. secure covered parking garages attached to the towers. mail delivered to mail boxes at the towers.

towers to be run by a private contractor in coordination with Garrison command. tower residences to be treated as private residences off base would. no NCO or officer can enter a residence that is not their's with out permission or a warrant and MP escort. No formations allowed on tower grounds. each apartment will be given a fixed allowance for utility expenses. if you go over, you pay the difference. if you go under, the left over is rolled over in case of future overages.

fewer if any people will live off base. Since on base houses will be freed up for people with children, and everyone else in a tower apartment. fewer soldiers getting into bad marriages to escape the barracks. fewer discipline problems caused by soldiers in shared spaces. soldiers' stress reduced as they have a Home to go home to. Instead of just a workplace where they keep their stuff and sleep. soldiers not missing meals because they couldn't get the DFAC. fewer soldiers at the PX food court eating fast food because they have a kitchen and food at home.housing costs reduced, since fewer people living off base.

fewer good soldiers and the training investment the military has made in them, leaving for civilian life.

Retention of highly-skilled individuals in the military is a huge issue. There's no incentive to stay in when they can make so much more in the civilian world.

>soldier
>brain

pick one

>reduce costs
>spend a ton of money in a vain attempt to stop attrition when most soldiers are so disgusted with military life they leave as soon as possible

good one

Start getting away from the changes toward "kindler, gentler, all-inclusive" shit that's been creeping in the last few years. Make it a god damn military again.

you can fix the cost of housing a soldier in a apartment unit on base and plan ahead for that.

if he lives off base. then he needs BAH and that is variable depending on location and exchange rates.

it costs money and time to replace skilled infantry and POGs. actual firefight experience and leadership skills are impossible to replace until the next shooting war.

soldiers don't have to waste time running and maintaining barracks. they can get work done or be off duty.

you won't have to dangle reenlistment bonuses in front of enlisted to get them to stay. IF their quality of life off of work is high enough.

a possible plus side would be that American contractors could get maintenance jobs.
Although that would be better spent on info structure

train to fight stand up shooting wars against major powers.

i would love some more time in the field doing warfighting stuff. it is a welcome break from the stress and work load of my garrison duties.

Whats the point of increasing defense spending if they're going end up "losing" billions of dollars. The DoD is like a teenage girl with daddy's credit card. They need to have a strict budget so they'll watch their spending closely

we flew the wings off all our airplanes bombing sand monkeys. we need to replace a lot of airframes. so we can be ready for a real war.

we also need a cheap dedicated COIN airframe, like the OV-10

I'm not saying that we should stop spending, in fact I'm all for it, I'm just saying they should spend more wisely and not "lose" money and invest the money correctly
