So last night I put together my first AR

The mag I used to test it with is a Colt GI mag with a black follower. The bolt catch will not function, the mag follower tilts backward and thus the bolt catch won't function.

On the last AR I had I didn't have this issue. The magazine detent spring feels extremely stiff, but it is not the disconnect spring though it was flared at one end like a disconnect spring was. I'm thinking about ordering a new mag catch spring in hopes to alleviate this problem, but before I do, is there any other possibility I should know about that could keep this thing from working?

I have a pmag in my truck that I'm going to grab right now to test
