Glass Filled and Fleck Plum Edition

That's the fleckiest plum I've ever seen
>>
I've resigned myself to get an AK-74 down the road, after being continuously haunted by the ghost of Kalashnikov. What are some things I should look out for, other than to not purchase from the "do not buy" list in that one buyer's guide.

And is there a particular company/type I should keep my eye on for when it comes to -74s?

Is a glass-filled bake still lighter than steel?

Also, on an unrelated note, I got some bakes without steel feed lip reinforcement (sight unseen, I took a gamble). Are the feed lips still decently durable, poor should I not store them loaded?

Not poor

Yes of course it is

The bakelite mags (I assume you're talking about 7.62) without steel feed lips are older. I would get some of the newer ones with steel feed lips if you're going to leave them loaded.

Large military factories use CHF machines because of their ability to manufacture barrels quickly. They used chrome lining for corrosion resistance against the corrosive ammo. The longevity of a CHF-CL barrel is an emergent property.

I got a WASR in May and just today got around to taking it to the range today. The rifle was cleaned and lubed (white lithium grease) and put away, except for my itch to camouflage the stock and put a Tapco RPK flash suppressor clone on it--the short five slot birdcage. Oh, and an ALG AKT trigger, which is bretty nice.

Tried a random milsurp Warsaw Pact 30 round steel mag sold to me in a sealed plastic bag and a 30 round Magpul. Tried "Red Army Standard" 122gr FMJ and HP, 154gr Tula softnoses, and one box of twenty rounds of Prvi hardball, totalling 140 rounds.

I was pleasantly surprised by how close the iron sights were to dead on zero from the box.

This is how I check zero on a 7.62x39mm AK or SKS, by the way. I check the 500m rear sight setting at 7 yards, the 300m at 15, and the 200m at 25, in that order. At each point after the initial adjustments it should be at least close, and mine was very very close out of the box. This surprised me because the last SKS I bought shot way out past Fort Mudge somewhere out of the box and took quite a bit of fussing and adjustment of the sights to finally get to shoot centered.

Observations:

The ALG AKT trigger is NICE. It's not as nice as a good two-stage AR trigger. It's got a lot of travel, a lot of takeup, and a long reset compared to AR triggers, though short compared to most AK triggers, even Tapco triggers. It was also glassy smooth, with a very crisp break.

The Tapco five-slot flash hider works very nicely. I could see no flash or sparks at all from behind the rifle, nor did it light up the range. I asked some other shooters there and they said it seemed to be generating a barely visible golf-ball sized orange dimly glowing patch a few inches in front of the muzzle, roughly the same or maybe less than an AR with A2 flash suppressor (though we all know ammunition flash signature is highly powder-dependent and therefore can change completely when you open a new box of ammo from a different production lot).

continued

The gun runs like a raped ape. I had no malfunctions of any kind in 140 rounds total. Ejected cases, whether brass or steel, had a very small ding at the mouth, and if I were inclined to reload I'm sure dies would iron that out with no problems.

140 rounds in half an hour got the gun a lot hotter a lot faster than I thought it would. Melted cosmolene was sweating out of the front sight base around the pins at the bottom and smoke was starting to come out from under the handguards, which had had silver spray pant applied to their interiors in an attempt to help them reflect heat a bit and reduce the amount of heat transmitted to the user's hand.

The gun felt a little rough cycling by hand before the range trip but 140 rounds seems to have smoothed it up nicely.

Oh, and to my pleased surprise, the Tula 154gr softnoses with the big round buttons of exposed lead at the point of every bullet fed slick as glass and did not hang up on the way into the chamber, as I've heard they occasionally do in some AKs.

I'm pleased with my purchase.

basically all drafted recruits dream of the ДMБ (DMB) (demobilization) so they scribble those letters and the year when they are done with service on anything they can. Such as mags, guns, eating utensils, mess kits, load bearing vests, entrenching tools, bayonets, trees, restroom walls, bus stops, train compartments, themselves, you name it.

I've seen hundreds of mags that had various years scratched on them. Looks like your mag came from Russia (vs Ukraine, where post mags we buy in USA come from), since the soldier was either from Altai region or served in Altai region.

Pretty standard yet interesting trench art.

>Guys I have anxiety about the election tomorrow.

Me too. I happen to live in an area that had a BLM riot back in September less than two miles from here, close to a big block of "low-income housing" full of "diverse urban yoots." (yeah, I would be long gone if I hadn't gotten laid off in June)

If I had any wit I wouldn't be hanging around here. I am not willing to spend a big chunk of my unemployment on a weeklong motel stay in some quiet little tourist town and risking coming back and finding nothing but ashes. I have no illusions that the local cops will have either the ability or the inclination to do anything but the same thing they did during the September riots--stand on the sidelines with their fingers up their assholes, and then clean up the wreckage and maybe write some tickets when it's over.

So I'm hoping there will be no riots tomorrow and hoping I wont be fighting for my life tomorrow night. God help me. God help us all. I never asked for this.

She won't need sanctions, she'll ban ALL imported ammo by EO. I'm sure if congress tries to check her there's some international commerce clause built into something passed a decade or more ago that will be stretched to allow it. Say goodbye to whatever surplus is left, as well as ZQI, PPU, and all flavors of cheap NATO calibers. Hope you like paying at least $1/rd on everything, because even 5.56 prices are going to SKYROCKET when she yanks the contract strings to force domestic manufacturers to limit non-mil sales.

Then you get to look forward to the strictly punitive ammo tax (sin tax) and yearly round count limits, because you gun owners are clearly responsible for every single mass shooting AND IF IT SAVES EVEN ONE LIFE.

Congress won't try to check her. They'll grumble, shuffle their feet, and bend over backwards to give her everything she wants, because if they don't, Cokie Roberts will call them "sexist." And Cokie Roberts will call them "sexist" anyway.

Just like the last eight years, in other words. The GOPe leadership in Congress will always have an excuse ready for why they can't really do anything and can't really stop her from doing whatever the fuck she wants whenever she wants, wherever she wants, in spite of having control of both houses of Congress, but if we keep voting the Dead Elephant Party and keep sending in contributions, they'll do much better next time.

so-called "assault weapons ban." The NRA turned out to vote that November and spanked the Democrats really, really badly. Their asses were red for twenty years.

Now they've forgotten their lesson, with Hitlery up on stages from coast to coast saying she wants to ban handguns, wants to ban possession of firearms by civilians, wants a $100/round tax on ammo to pay for "gun violence," and on, and on. they've forgotten the 1994 lesson and they think their balls are big again. we'll see tomorrow.

either way, this country is going to be going through some "interesting times" in the next few years. if Trump wins he's not going to be able to drain the swamp but he might be able to delay the inevitable for a bit. if Hitlery wins she's going to try to suspend the Constitution just as much as the Supreme Court will let her (and she's going to have multiple judges to nominate), rule as a dictator, even more so than Obama already, and people just might start voting from the rooftops if she's as bad as she's promised to be.

that's the thing about declaring that the laws no longer apply. if the powers that be say the Constitution no longer applies, and the laws no longer apply, you can hardly blame people for saying "Cool! let's start with the rule that said we had to do what you say."

Featureless is the way to go and get around the new assault weapons definitions here in California. Grip wrap all the things, change out your flash hider (which I don't use anyway) if you have one for a muzzle nut or brake, and rock on.

Pic related, my once proud Tantal, still legal, still functional. I'm not registering shit, or permanently affixing mags just to use a pistol grip.

Some people will say they are glass flecks but that doesn't make sense intuitively to me, I mean if they were going to add glass flecks, why would they do it in such a low quantity that's it rare to even find them? On things like Tula magazines or some earlier Izzy magazines, or Tula plum pistol grips, yeah I think those are glass flecks, but in the case of the plum handguards, it doesn't make sense that they would only throw in a sprinkling of glass flecks which wouldn't have any effect on the strength of the polyamide at all. I think it's a defect, clumped up shit that didn't mix right.

Thats exactly what NY has, semi auto with detachable mag and one"evil" feature is a assault weapon.

Evil features are:
Flash hider and muzzle break
Folding or collapsable stock
Pg
Thumbhole stock
Bayo or grenade launcher lug
Threaded barrel(even if its bare threads)

Only way to get around is fix mags

Also any mag over 10rds are banned no matter if there pre or post ban

>>
>>31933932
Good HD rounds have been created but none is currently in production and none is currently available.

1990s Ulyanovsk 8M3 or 8HP "Effect" hollowpoints, now out of production
2011-12 production Hornady "Critical Defense" with the 123gr VMAX bullet, now out of production

There are no good choices in current production.

The least bad choice in current production is the 123-125gr brass cased commercial softnose hunting ammunition available from Remington/Federal/Winchester/etc. The least costly iteration of ammo like this is going to be either Prvi Partizan or Seller & Beillot, for those who want to "buy it cheap and stack it deep."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZD3kIeGaUs

That's a 14" jell-o block plus a 6" thick gallon jug of water, totaling probably approximately the equivalent of 18" of calibrated 10% ballistic gelatin. That's a lot more than optimum.

Remember too that the 7.62x39mm is about as powerful as .30/30 Winchester, and with decent expanding bullets will do pretty much the same thing in soft tissue. Just about all the expanding bullets out there are designed for hunting whitetail deer/mule deer/black bear/feral hogs/other tough, stubborn animals up to 150kg or so. They penetrate a LOT more than would be optimum in HD. But just about anything else will penetrate even more, maybe a lot more. The current Hornady 7.62x39mm 123gr "SST" round penetrates so much ballistic gelatin that it might as well be FMJ, from a home defense perspective--it's an awesome hunting bullet, it's accurate, it's great for those who want to hunt black bear with one of those little Czech bolt action carbines--but an HD round it ain't.

The way you hold a grip wrap is to leave your thumb above your other fingers, rather than wrapping it around. it takes some getting used to, but it's not terribly bad once you get the muscle memory down.

>>
>>31934003
I'm legit starting to worry about 5.45 more than anything else. I'm at 1080 rounds, but I'm worried that's not enough. Every other caliber I can pay inflated prices for domestic production, but 5.45 without Russian components (i.e., cases) is pretty much a dead caliber.
>>
>>31934779
I'd imagine domestic production would fill the void, at .60-80 cents a round.

I have 5000 or so and not that comfy
>>
>>31934405
Oh. One other thing.

Some people have gotten good results with the 154gr softpoint ammo from Tula, in terms of ballistic gelatin testing:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UWA2-ZvXFI

But not everyone:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOHrY9KiR2A ("Herter's" was the name printed on the boxes when Russian steelcase ammo was imported by the "Cabela's" outdoor chain a few years back, and the ammo was from Tula)

Note the significant velocity difference between the two tests, over 100 f.p.s. In the test showing the higher velocity, we saw the bullet expand the way a softpoint bullet is supposed to. In the test with the lower velocity, we see no expansion or deformation at all.

The second video also shows an examination of the bullet construction. The core appears to be dead-soft pure lead but the steel jacket is massively thick and heavy, with just a few shallow grooves or cuts on the interior of the jacket at the point to encourage expansion. It's also not obvious whether there were other differences. Do different production runs of this bullet have different jacket thicknesses, that could also contribute to the differing behavior in ballistic gelatin?

Anyway, what I come away with here is that there is not a lot of consistency here, and that you don't know what you're going to see in terms of bullet performance when you open that box, even if you've seen videos on Youtube where someone tested the ammo and the bullet expanded.
>>
Do 5.56 AKs run steel case or brass better? How is it compared to an AR running steel?
>>
>>31934941
I haven't tried it. I've heard people at ARFCOM say that 5.56mm AKs do not run steel case 5.56mm ammo very well at all, though. Something to do with the case having less taper and greater force being required for extraction, something like that, and the steel being somewhat less elastic than brass.
>>
>>31934987
Horseshit. only cheap mags cause those sort of feeding problems due to poor feeding lip design/geometry. With proper OEM Bulgarian, Polish, or Russian mags they will work brass or steel all day long.

i was really hoping to add more to the collection before the election but funds have been too scarce unfortunately.
>>
>>31934875
I really hope it doesn't get that bad. I don't shoot my AK that much; I shoot about 2400 rounds of 9mm yearly and that's my most used caliber. Still, .308 prices for 5.45 is far below ideal considering it'll all still be steel cased stuff since I assume that's the only part of the cartridge that'll still be importable and I don't see domestic brass production for such an obscure round ever starting.
>>
>>31935199
Not feeding problems. Extraction problems were what was described.

What if the rifle you have is a Romanian WASR that has been dressed up to resemble an East German StG943? The mag well on mine only accepts East German "Wieger" mags and plastic Pro-Mags. Bulgarian polymer mags do not fit in the mag well unless a great deal of material is filed off on each side near the front. The mag well has a step down at the front to hold the sides of an East German mag very tightly all the way to the front of the mag well, and that step down keeps other mags from fitting without adjustment.

I recently got a 5.56mm AK magazine that the seller claimed was East German but I think it may be a Romanian copy, as the pattern of folds and ridges on the sides of the mag tube was similar but not identical, and this magazine, likewise, had to be filed down a great deal on each side toward the front before it would fit in the mag well.

I haven't tried any other 5.56mm AK mags.

I've had my eyes on a VEPR in 7.62x39 for a long time now. But I'm not entirely sure if it's worth the $7-800 I might end up paying for it. Are they gud?

>>
>>31935736
To be entirely fair, there are a whole lot of companies that have been making cylindrical muzzle brakes with great big circular holes in the sides for quite a while now. When you start with round stock and make the holes by drilling you're gonna get certain similarities in appearance.

Just saying. I'm all for innovation and want to give them the benefit of the doubt... then again something really innovative might not look so similar.

Get a bunch, then. You aren't fucked BUT those plastic mags will wear out faster. Some people say plastic mags will crack at the feed lips if left loaded, too, which would kind of suck if it happened to your home defense gun--AKs are reliable, but damaged magazine feed lips will stop them just as cold as any other design.

If I could do it all over again I would just have stocked up right away on the Beryl mags as they work perfectly in my Norinco and SLR both, whereas I had to dremel some material off a few Bulgarian mags to make them able to be used in the Norinco. The Beryls are also just a little cheaper if you get them from XXXFENCEXXX on files, $35/ea shipped versus $45-55/ea for the Bulgarian ones.

Depends on what "dirt" cheap is, and how often you shoot, etc. I bought Magpul 7.62 mags when I first got my WASR, and while they work well for around $12 a pop, I probably would have been better off buying bakelite ones right away as they are just as light, steel reinforced and muh aesthetic. But say, if those Magpuls were $5/ea because somebody was desperate to unload them or something, I'd probably still get them anyway and use them as range mags.

I got them a few days after I got the Norinco because I read on files that people had got them to work in some Norinco 84s' and SLR-106 as well, and at $10/ea I was willing to flush $20 down the toilet and use them as range mags if need be. This was before I had purchased and confirmed that Beryl mags worked and that I could get them fairly easily.

There is also a plum 5.56 Circle 10 which is more rare, I want to find one but I don't think I would be lucky to get one before someone else on AKFiles would snatch it up. I paid $100 shipped for that one. The green and plums were 1st gen mags only, they dropped those colors later on and went with the smoke, but the green and plums are metal reinforced, including feed lips, unlike the smoke which only has the metal lugs. You can tell a 1st gen from a second gen by seeing if the horizontal waffle lines continue onto the front spine of the mag, 1st gens stop at the edge, 2nd gens continue across more or less. The VEPR is a 45 round RPK and a recent purchase. If you want AK parts for good prices you need to get an AKfiles account and scour the marketplace daily like all of the autists here on /akg/. Especially for 5.56 mags, you won't find shit on retail websites and if you do they are overpriced.

The feed lips can crack, but most likely the mags will start to get hairline fractures around the front and rear lugs, and extend across. I bought a brand new fucking mag locally and noticed a few days later that it had cracked while it was still new in the fucking bag. What makes those mags suck is not just that they aren't reinforced at the feed lips, but that the fucking polymer is fucking really brittle and not the same type on the black and colored mags. They look cool but blow dick for costing so much despite being little more than a fancy range mag.

>>31936349

Short answer is you probably can't.

Long answer is that the 4.5mm folding stock seen on that Krink requires the installation of a 4.5mm folding trunnion in the rear of the gun's receiver. You'll have to drill out the existing trunnion, machine holes for the stock release button, then rivet in the new trunnion and weld up the old holes if necessary. You'll also need to install the latch onto the front trunnion in order to lock the stock when folded, which will likely involve more effort than it's actually worth compared to just buying an all new gun with the correct front and rear trunnions pre-installed, then having the barrel cut down to SBR size.

If you don't want to go the machining route, there's some aftermarket stock options out there for the M92, but they won't be 4.5mm Russian/Bulgy stock compatible.

It isn't the only criterion, but it's a very important one to a lot of people.

If you live alone out in the country, fine, use a Barrett Light Fifty and APIT, maybe put some Claymores in the front yard with intersecting fields of fire wired to the doorbell.

But for those of us who have neighbors, or families and kids, especially if we live in apartments, collateral damage is a real concern and we have other criteria and different needs when we're considering different ammo types.

It seems to be the absolute best HD round available in 7.62 x 39, based on the fact that it actually expands in the first three inches after impact, unlike almost every other hollow or soft point in this caliber. Most don't start to expand until much later, making them less ideal for HD. Incidentally, most of them also overpenetrate as much or more than the SST, making your point moot.

Also, here, cheap Prvi Partizan softnoses. PROTIP: their secret is using a copper jacket for bullets intended to expand, like everyone else on Earth has been doing since jacketed bullets were invented in the 1880s, instead of copper washed mild steel, which the Russians use because it's cheaper.

I would strongly encourage you to just buy a 104UR. A krinkov kit plus two barrels is going to run you just as much if not more than a 104UR. Then just cut the 104UR barrel once the stamp is approved.

There's no such thing as a 30 round 5.45 magazine made by Izhmash that is commercial. There is for the 5.56/.223 mags but that's a whole different ball game.

Good to know. So what is the name for these ones they put out with the non-American Saigas?
>>
>>31939840
Oh well I guess there is a commercial 5.45 30rd mag. I forgot about those because we don't get those in the US as far as I know.

Those can be distinguished from the military mags by the front lug of the magazine, it's bulkier and squared off. This is because Saigas don't have bullet guides so the bullet guide is built into the front of the mag.

Those mags usually also have the commercial Izhmash logo, as that one in the picture does.

Okay.

In the meantime I've been thinking and I may end up just leaving it 16" anyways (still light and handy, just legal to bring with me anywhere I could take a regular one)

Any idea where to get one?

What would happen if you used one in a gun with a bullet guide installed?
>>
>>31939961
The problem with that is that the 104URs are fairly overgassed out of the box. It's meant to be that after you cut the barrel down, the system will be gassed correctly. I think some of the newer ones may have gas limiters which would make them properly gassed with the 16" barrel. You could maybe call kvar and see if they have any that they can confirm have the gas limiter installed.

However if you're planning on leaving it at 16", why not just get a full length AK-74?

They actually won't lock in at all. The bullet guide in the rifle gets in the way of the bullet guide on the magazine.
>>
>>31940001
I'm assuming it wouldn't even lock into the gun because the front locking lug

Hey, it's autism wasr guy again >>31939458. I was browsing the place that I was going to have refinish my WASR and apparently they also do AK builds so this box of Bulglarian AK-74 parts may son become a rifle.
