>The Marine Corps is investigating after an F-35B Joint Strike Fighter based out of Beaufort, South Carolina, recently caught fire in mid-air, Military.com has learned. The incident happened Oct. 27 at Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 501, a fleet replacement squadron for the Marine Corps consisting of 20 F-35B aircraft. One of the aircraft experienced a fire in the weapons bay while conducting a training mission over Beaufort, 1st Lt. John Roberts, a spokesman for 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, told Military.com.

>No estimate of damage caused by the fire was available. The incident was listed by the Naval Safety Center as a Class A mishap, meaning damage totalled $2 million or more on the $100 million aircraft. The squadron didn't observe any kind of grounding or operational pause as a result of the mishap, Roberts said. The F-35 program has suffered several setbacks due to aircraft catching fire, though previous incidents involved the Air Force's F-35A conventional take-off and landing variant.

>For the Marine Corps, this incident comes at a crucial time for the aircraft, as the first operational F-35B squadron, Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 121, prepares to forward-base from Yuma, Arizona to Japan in January, ahead of a sea deployment in the Pacific early the following year. The aircraft is now completing its third and final round of at-sea developmental tests aboard the amphibious assault ship USS America off the coast of San Diego, and is expected to complete them later this month.

They're always catching on fire anon. It doesn't matter, and the program is totally not in a death spiral.
>>
How can a fucking plane catch fire just like that?

American QUALITY at its best..

>The F-35 program has suffered several setbacks due to aircraft catching fire
>plural

This is only the second time such an incident happened, and the previous time was due to a damaged fan blade coming apart.
>>
>>31931851

Still, if it happens once, it can happen again. And remember, unlike the Rafale, the F-35 has no back-up engine if there is an issue.
>>
>>31931851
This is actually the third F-35 fire.
>>
>>31931858
What the fuck kind of logic is that?

Also nice duel engine reliability meme.
>>
>>31931878

A hot start does not count as a fire.

So an aim-9 or amraam missile lit off.

Who cares.
>>
>>31931858
If you had a fan blade break or a systemic fire, both engines are going to get fucked.
>>
>>31931858
It wasn't an engine fire though.

Also no one mentioned the Rafale.

Reminder that during testing and training for state of the art equipment, it is perfectly normal for stuff to go wrong/catch fire. That's why they have tests.

What Popular Mechanics (who are citing Aviation Week's theory) are talking about is a hot start.
That saod >>31931888, it's not actually confirmed that it was a hot start.

>>31931944
lol

>>31930766
I'll be interested to hear more; if it was during a hover, that could indicate that something in the bay got too hot from redirected exhaust gases. If it was just during forward flight I'm honestly not sure; perhaps there was some chaffed wiring and simultaneously a fuel / hydraulic leak?

No it doesn't. Flags are cancer, if you want a community with IDs and flags go to reddit, f-16.net or some other Internet community.

Still a far lower Class A mishap rate than 4th gens.

And it seems the pilot managed to land it safely. So, still perfect pilot protection record.

More info:
https://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/us-marine-corps-investigating-cause-of-f-35b-fire-431286/

Looks like it was either caused by the IPP (auxiliary power unit and environmental control system all-in-one) or something like a fuel line connected to it (the IPP isn't in the weapons bay and AFAIK is separated by a thick metal bulkhead with gaps only for wiring / fuel / hydraulic lines), so I'm not sure that a fire would be able to propagate into there if the IPP was the cause.
>>
>>31930766

>1.5 trillion dollar project

>1.5 trillion dollars that could have been spent giving every pilot an F-22
>>
>>31939295

How far will this put everything back? Or is it too early to say.
>>
>>31939313
>1.5 trillion

Oh look, its the sign of the retard!

Hi retard!
>>
>>31939357
We still don't know what the cause was; if it's a design issue, then obviously it'll need to be fixed and perhaps a grounding could happen. If it was unusual wear & tear / maintenance error, or a supplier error, it won't affect anything.
>>
>>31939378

Worst-best case is refitting current aircraft with a redesigned part?
>>
>>31939404
Best case scenario: a maintainer or whatever screwed up, no action required (other than probably some retraining).

Worst case scenario: it's a design issue, the problem is found in many other F-35s across all 3 variants, the fleet has to be grounded for probably 2 months, the test fleet will keep flying because they get special privileges (eg, when the engine fire happened, testing was only paused for a brief period, then resumed while operational jets remained grounded / limited in their flight envelope), maybe Block 3F is delayed a couple of weeks, but operational pilot training suffers the most. The production line might also be delayed slightly, but unlike the insulation issue they had recently, IPPs are meant to be relatively easily accessed for maintenance, etc.

Realistically though, the fact that this incident took place roughly 2 weeks ago and they still haven't grounded the fleet (touch wood) is a good indicator that it's not a design issue, or that if it is, it's not systematic / super prevalent.
>>
I literally just drove down highway 21 and witnessed an f35 perform a vertical landing
The fan makes a tremendous noise
>>
The F-35B looks fucking goofy as shit when it has the fan flap and the landing gear open
>>
>>31939587
Noice.

Did the freedom noise wash over you euphorically?
>>
>>31939664
The euphoria I experienced was comparable to my experiences with other combat aircraft I've seen up close, typically at airshows, which was impressive considering the Marines weren't trying to put on a show.
>>
People don't seem to realize 2 fires In 200 f35s is actually incredible reliability.

We are talking about 100mill jets with a million parts that could fail.
>>
>>31939313
1.5 trillion is for 2,000 f35s and parts up to 2045 jackass
>>
>>31931944
J-20 LRIP is suppossedly only costing 110M a piece. Price will come down as far as 80M.
>>

And 50 years of operations and maintenance.

>Be Chinese jet pilot
>Fly superior J-20 stealth fighter
>Visibility is abysmal due to perpetual smog from factory pollution

>Realize you're in Vietnamese airspace now, pray your stealth will keep you invisible
>Get lit up by ancient Vietnamese radar and hit the throttle
>Engine failure! Damn Russian- oh wait, made in China
>Get plane back under control and try to limp back with one engine
>Remaining engine starts sputtering
>Radio a mayday
>Radio made in China; doesn't work
>Remaining engine dies, won't restart
>Try to steer plane in for a crash-landing
>You can't land here, it's all rice paddies; you'll die on impact
>Grab ejection lever
>Lever made in China, breaks off
>Desperately grab lever to open canopy to bail out the old-fashioned way
>Lever made in China, breaks off
>Test theory and gently tap canopy
>Canopy made in China, breaks off
>Bail out before impact and pull parachute cord
>Parachute made in China, novelty umbrella pops out along with note saying "if you didn't want to be cheated, you should have paid more"
>Hit the ground and break both legs, but miraculously survive impact
>State media claims you heroically shot down 180 American F-35's, then used your plane as an impromptu missile, bailing out just before blowing up USS Nimitz
>Die of lead poisoning three years later
>>
>>31939476

I'm glad to hear, thanks for the answer.
>>
>>31941217
Let's be realistic here. There'd be much worse poisoning than simple lead poisoning form breathing that air.
