Sup /k/, I'm writing a book. Since Tom Clancy had to be a faggot and die, I've been throwing around ideas for my own books.
Right now my main idea is for a book about a fledgling Ex-Soviet/East Bloc nation.
So let's say hypothetically a fictional nation had some special forces units from Russia operating in it. What would they be called? I've seen MVD, FSB, TsSN, KSO all tossed around but have a hard time really figuring out what they all do.
What I'm looking for is which of these units would most likely be out in other countries (ie; Syria, and other sandboxes) doing any kind of shit. Spooky or otherwise. It's a book for entertainment, not absolute realism, so whatever. Just so I know which units to actually read more into...

try KOKOT

>HOMO
You know since you had to be a faggot and waste precious trips.
Great suggestions. Both of these groups look pretty operator so far. I'm going to take a little artistic freedom and have them all use AR15 pattern rifles.
This is going to be set in the near future and Russia is practically turning their AKs in M4s anyway.

MVD are internal troops, FSB is national security.
GRU is the unit you're looking for.

>I knew I cropped this pic for a reason
But srsly anon. I would like to read it so long as it is semi-realistic and not filled with cod tier garbage

Nice quads. But on a serious note, yes. I love writing and I admit I'm not the best at it. I'm just trying to do something for fun that has an air of plausibility and suspension of disbelief.
A lot of my inspiration lately comes from movies like John Wick, Sicario, 9th Company.. And videogames like Medal of Honor. To be honest, a little bit outrageous but I'm trying to be tasteful.
No one would really want to read a story about REAL special forces who do nothing but walk through mountains for weeks and kick in a door once. Unless it was a memoir or biography of a real operator.

This is an excellent source of inspiration for small unit, tactical action

Exactly, which is why I'd like it to be semi-realistic. Nothing autisticly realistic, just enough to where it feels real and can put me in a state of surreal belief. As if I'm accually there with them.

Looks like a good read, I'll look into it. While we're at it, does anyone know any biographical or memoir style books? Good stuff about either modern infantry or WWII tankers are particularly interesting. All I've heard of is Mailed Fist for the latter.

What you're looking for is GRU, GRU VMF, and SVR/Zaslon.
GRU and GRU VMF who are Army and Naval SF respectively, role wise, the American equivalents would be Delta and SEALs/DEVGRU.
SVR is their foreign intelligence agency, which has it's own spooky SF called "Zaslon".
FSB and MVD are internal security units. FSB is like their FBI and MVD is like homeland security.
KSO is a joint SF agency that deals with emergency situations, they have loose authority over most SF when they're needed.

>hi guys, i want to write a book, but i don't want to do an ounce of research. can you just spoon-feed me information?

You might consider Kremlin-Backed Russian Mercs instead of straight-out Russian SOF.
Recently read an article about these "Vagner" guys fighting (and dying) in Syria.
