Also, armor thread.

>Steel plates

I'm tired of even arguing this anymore. Good luck in all endevours, fa.m.
>>

I know the argument but I don't care I'm cheap. I'll probably never even need it.

Go back to /b/ faggot

I dont get what the deal is about arguing how ar500 isnt good. Shot a chestplste repeatedly with .308 with a mixture of fmj and hpbt and not even a dent at 50yds
>>
>>31928497
ar500 plates are plenty good, they're just not the best.

I don't know why, but some retarded autists just hate when someone else doesn't buy the absolute best body armor there is.
>>
>>31928519

>>31928497

Ar500 may be penetrated by M193 ball at close ranges, depending on muzzle velocity of the rifle. Thankfully with 20's being rare and SBR's being all the more common this is less of a concern, and M193 55gr has fallen out of favor. Also, if someone is shooting you at 6 meters in the armor plate and not penetrating, you're going to be dead shortly thereafter anyway.
>>
>>31928497
Small and fast bullets will penetrate, and 5.56 varmint rounds are common enough. It's better than nothing and a great deal. I just don't like how heavy it is. Anyone who doesn't get the coating (do people still do this?) is fucking themselves and possibly teammates standing beside them.
>>
Go to gunbot dot net. There is a link at the top for the cheapest available AR500. Also a good site to keep bookmarked in general.
>>
>>31928543
> Dead wearing ar500 if shot within close range.
Why? Spalling?
>>
>>31928543
>Ar500 may be penetrated by M193 ball at close ranges

What are you saying? Give some specifics.

m193 ball will penetrate ar550 assuming the ar550 plate is 1mm thick.
>>
>>31928581

Because someone with an AR15 has 29 more rounds in his magazine you fucking mong.
>>
>>31928557
Thanks
>>
>>31928581
If I'm not mistaken, AR500 level III plates can be failed by M193. I forget the data therein, but if I remember correctly a 10.5" barrel maintains yaw and fragmentation ability out to 75ish yards, and can fail an AR500 level 3 plate out to 100ish yards. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, I can't find my book. I think this is close to accurate because I was pouring over data trying to decide what barrel length to use for my SBR project.
>>
>>31928599
>>31928620
Well Jesus. Isn't level 4 just good for one shot?
Is this why ceramic is just better?
Ifni found a ceramic level 3 front and back and groin for 300$ should I grab it even if it's prolly stolen from the mil?
>>
>>31928620
30 yards, not 100 yards for the AR500 penetration.
>>
Just search youtube for ar500 vs m193 for plenty of videos of them penetrating.

Velocity is king and it pretty much only applies in CQB distances.
>>
>>31928649
My knowledge is limited to military issued gear as far as ceramics go. The old level 3 SAPI plates had to be used in conjunction with soft armor in your vest, and were good for one hit from 7.62 ball I believe.

The newer level 4 ESAPI plates, the green ones, are standalone (no soft armor needed to work 100%) multi-hit 30-06 AP rated.

Newer ceramics are great in my opinion. If private joe snuffy can throw his vest around and not damage his plates, you're probably going to be fine. Plus, they're lighter. I've always been trained to fight light, so I think that is worth it by itself but it is all personal preference.
>>
>>31928671

Like this one? m193 6 yards away going 3350 fps out of a 22" barrel?
https://youtu.be/FfA3Qv9JjBA
>>
>>31928620
>>31928653

It's a 20" AR barrel that's needed to penetrate it.
In the wound channel video he shot it with a 23" savage axis and it penetrated. I doubt anything lower than 20" would have the velocity needed to penetrate
>>
>>31928620
>>31928653
Source on that info? Not saying you're wrong, but in my mind it seems unlikely a 10.5" could push a 5.56 fast enough to punch through level 3 plates.
>>
>>31928731
In the video above yours he shot an ar500 plate with the same gun and load and it didn't even dent it
>>
>>31928283

Spartan armor offers level III+ ar550 with spall coating and triple curve for like $270 for a set. These will stop m193 and m855.
>>
>>31928735
Googling tells me I was wrong, the numbers I'm thinking of were for the 16" barrel.
>>
>>31928742
thats the video where he shoots the ar500 level 3+ plate. i as talking about the video he annotates about the level 3 plate only which he was able to penetrate with the same gun.

side note, the spartan armor level 3+ plates are penetrated by the same gun under the same circumstances. he has a video on that too.
>>
>>31928742
Get outta here with your facts
>>
>>31928779
so maybe we need to judge plates on an individual basis then
>>
>>31928798
thats what im saying. I'm not trying to say ar500 is shit, i just dont want anyone here to get them and think they are the only armor solution they will need.
>>
>>31928819
I've already been wrong in this thread, but my understanding is that companies market "III+" plates as being able to specifically stop M193.
>>
>>31928649
Level 4 plates vary in multi hit rating, but can take a min of 2, maximum of 30 or 40.
>>
>>31928931
I thought the nij rating required l4 prot to withstand at least six 5.56/7.62 impacts followed by at least one 30-06
>>
>>31928891
the way I understand it is that the NIJ doesn't have and specific set of criteria for 3+ plates. The "3+" thing was basically made up by manufacturers resulting in a huge variance between most manufacturers on what their level 3+ plates can take.
>>
>>31929042
That is my understanding as well, yeah.
