Personally I have an 18" but I wanted to be special.

If I could shoot farther with an 18 or 20 inch I would. the farthest range around my house is about 300 yards. I really want something I can reach out to 600+.

16 inch will do that fine, especially with a mid range optic. I know Im not answering your question but would you consider a 308 AR and look at 200-600 yards?

A 14.5 inch is easily capable of hitting those distances. The only limitation is fragmentation starts to limit around 650 yards if it's against something alive. If you're killing paper it doesn't matter even.

And that's with 14.5, which should be noted is less than 16.

Barrel length affects velocity, but not so much accuracy after a certain point. You want to decrease your MOA- better trigger, floating handguards, better optic.

As the other anons have said, 16 is adequate for 300 meters and below. But if you are actually putting together a setup like pic related with the stock, bipod, and high quality glass, why NOT go 20 inches for the added velocity/fragmentation bonus?

I already have a 16 inch AR that I am slowly upgrading. I want something a little better that can get better accuracy, velocity, and range for when I move out of Commu, I mean Cali. And I am leaning more towards 7.62 for my new AR.

Should I just get a 22 or 24 inch barrel then? Would that make much of a difference?

100 to 300 yards? 16 inches would be just fine. I wouldn't bother worrying about length unless you're hitting targets beyond 500 yards. Even then, ammo would be just as important a concern.

there is no more propellant to burn in a 5.56 round past 20". A 22" barrel is actually worse than a 20". 20" gets the ideal performance out of the 5.56/.223.

While I can get a 308 semi auto before Jan 1st, I will be cucked when it comes to magazines and pretty soon, ammo.
