My stepfather passed away a few years back and this revolver ended up being left with my mother who has since given it to me. I know its a Smith and Wesson 586 but i dont know much more about it.
Its pretty dirty and i know its been that way for a while, none of the carbon will even come off on my hand anymore so im wondering if it soaked into the plating somehow? Can i use solvents on the nickel plating? What can you guys tell me about this thing?

I mean i have other guns and everything its just im nervous about the plating and how careful i need to be
>>

The plating will be fine, the carbon probably won't come off of the cylinder but it won't hurt anything. Resist the urge to scrape the carbon as that can remove the nickel. Nice gun btw
>>
>>31919541
Thanks anon, kind of disappointed i wont get it back like new. My stepfather abused this thing

You're mad because he actually used the gun? I mean that's not even bad you could fire 150 rounds on a new gun, clean it and it'll look like that, it's thousands of pounds of gas pressure and particles jetting past at high speeds, no shit it's going to leave a mark

I'm not sure why this bothered me so much but seriously I don't know why you would be entitled to a brand new gun from a deceased man? That carbon build up is very normal from a used gun. If the cylinder locks up tight you have nothing to worry about.

Grow the fuck up.

Reread that post a couple of times and it seems like anon is "kind of disappointed" he won't get it like new; not I FUCKIN HATE MY STEPDAD BECAUSE HE FIRED IT!

I knew my step father 8 years and he never shot it one time while i knew him or any time before mi madre met him. He shot it and put it away dirty for over a decade. Along with leaving it outside in a florida garage for quite a few of those years. When i say he abused it i mean he abused and not that he used it so please kindly btfo
>>
>>31919803
>so please kindly btfo
don't think you know what that means

Could have left you a Taurus that wouldn't even be repairable.

I mean, shit anon, if you don't want it I'll take it off of you. You're right, that little bit of carbon on the cylinder severely reduces the value to like.. nothing. I'll probably just end up throwing it away for you. I'm doing you a favor!

Bronze brushes and bore solvent. Sorry about your stepdad. Congrats on inheriting a great pistol.
>>
>>31919458
It's a 686 which are stainless. 586's are blued.
Don't worry about the carbon buildup at the end of the cylinder, it just comes back after the very next shot. When I see clean cylinders it tells me that the person never shot it or they practically sanded the metal during each cleaning
>>
>>31926649
Or its nickel plated, dumbass
My 686 has over 5,000 rounds through it. I keep the end of the cylinder clean. You just have no fucking clue what you're talking about.

>>31919458
Youre literally his wifes son lmao.

Protip: Use an eraser.

Nice Gun, I've never seen a Nickeled 586.

I have a few nickeled Smiths, and I find the finish to hold up pretty well. It isn't my favorite, and it can flake off if the gun gets dented, and can start to yellow (I had an old Colt do that pretty badly, but not a Smith).
