The Marines are still getting a smaller budget than the glory days of Iraq/Afganistan, where you had money for everything. I work with Maintenance in an Infantry Battalion. When the USMC switched Victor Units to M4's, some of what we got was new, but a lot were hand me downs from the Army. When we recieved one shipment, they literally gave us rifles with dirt on them, rifles without buttstocks, and a few rifles without their bolt carrier groups.

Then we deal with supply and it can take over a fucking year to get parts in to replace the Image intensifiers on NVG's, and Radios that are so back ordered that they cannot even estimate a date for getting new ones after we swapped ours out for repairs.

In the future we will start getting MRAPs to slowly replace the HMMWVs we got, but until then I'm still working with trucks that are old as fuck and just get repaired enough to move them to last long enough for the next field excercise.

The army is for defense and slow pushes backed by heavy logistics shitting out infrastructure behind them. They are what holds territory.

You can argue air force would normally be deprecated but the USAF went all spooky spy planes and SAC doomsday cult. In the future likely the navy will have the main air power and the army will have its own considerable air power for ground support, air superiority will mostly be drones and missiles, and the air force will fly UFOs and do stuff nobody knows about and maybe show up to drop neutron bombs or something sci-fi on occasion.

This image is bullshit and always triggers my autism when I see it. $170 in 1942 money is $700 in 1969, when the M16A1 became standard-issue, and without the benefit of the 1940s-era military industrial complex equipment was bound to be more expensive. $170 in 1942 is $5000 2015, $1100 in 1969 is almost $8000 in 2015, and cost of military production is even higher now than it was forty years ago, though the change wasn't as marked as it was in the decades after WWII. With all the extra and new equipment it is expected to pay perhaps two or three times to equip the modern infantryman. However, we are absolutely not spending a hundred times as much on equipment as we were seventy years ago.

Now, if they were talking about the costs of training, logistics, and bureaucratic bullshit I might believe them, but to think equipment costs are that much higher is fucking stupid.
