I have been working with 45 super for a while and figured i would answer some questions for people looking to build pistols in this caliber or start reloading for ones they have. AMA
255gr bullets out of a semi-auto and no responses?
Can you load regular .45 acp brass to .45 Super pressures?
Also, is .460 Rowland even worth the conversion costs if you don't live in grizzly country?
I read that even cast RIA 1911 frames can handle .45 Super. Can they handle .460 Rowland?
How bad do .45 Supers and .460 Rowlands batter slides and frames?
Are recoil absorbers worth the investment?

>45 brass to super pressures.
That depends. in a fully supported chamber, like on the xd series pistols, yes. I can safely run a 255grain flatnose out of my 4 inch xd using standard once fired federal brass. In a 1911 or glock, super brass is recommended because the chamber support isn't as good. if you build a 1911 with a ramped chamber however, the standard brass can be used. the newer glock barrels might have more chamber support than the older models, but I don't know that for sure.

>frame battering.
That depends on how your gun is built. a 1911 with a 24# mainspring and a square firing pin stop with a 18# recoil spring can take some pretty stout loads before the frame starts hitting the rails. on my xd the 255grainers seem to work fine with a completely stock gun. i have put about 100 of the 255 supers trough it so far and cant find any sign of peening.
If you own a Glock in 460 Rowland and a second Glock in 9x25 Dillon, are you the edgiest man alive?

>460 conversion
As far as i can tell the 460 conversion is a ripoff. the 460 rowland has the exact same powder capacity as the standard 45 auto. The 460 rowland kit is simply a barell with a deeper chamber, a compensator, and some stronger springs. you could buy and aftermarket threaded barrel to accept the compensator and a spring kit, for less than you could buy the rowland kit and get the same results.

Thanks for the honesty.
.460 Rowland does turn a 1911 into something about as powerful as .44 mag though, and I like raising awareness of how our traditional weapons can be much more versatile than many think.

It does, but I'm saying instead of the expensive kit, just buy a threaded barrel and a compensator and load standard brass up to rowland pressures.
you will get the same results without proprietary brass, overpriced kits, and unnecessarily long chambers

To be honest, that's why I love 45 super (not OP).
It brings the 45 ACP kicking and screaming into the modern firearms market, by bringing it up to 700 FPE, which is ~.357 mag, and makes the capacity tradeoff suddenly worthwhile.

.45 Super can easily match 10mm power, and .460 Rowland matches .44 mag well enough.

Thanks man. I'm a huge 1911 fanboy and I appreciate the info.
