if all you want is a handgun for the sake of having a handgun, and you don't intend to take care of it, a glock will do you just fine.
there are other more interesting options out there. even if the glock wasn't ubiquitous, I still don't like the triggers on most striker-fired handguns.
if you find a good DA/SA you will probably enjoy it much more. CZ, (older) Sig Sauer and S&W models can all be found used for under $500 and will more likely be something you would be proud to hand down to your children

Yeah it's all about what you like. I always hated glock till I held and shot mine that I now carry for work.

I've had a Glock 17 gen 3 for about a decade. For the past few years I've been using it in pistol shooting competitions. It is an amazing handgun. I've never had a single issue with it. No jams, nothing. I did replace some of the trigger mechanism and polish it to make the trigger lighter. My only issue was the trigger pull, as it made my own poor technique worse. However, after the trigger job (cost like $30) I fixed all of my issues, which I think was mostly mental. I highly recommend the gun, and unless you want to compete with it, I would leave it factory and train as much as you can.

Do yourself a favor and get a g19, 2 less shots, infinitely more versatile. Carry is easier, can work 17 and 19 mags, better balance imho, just a better design.

It's a good pistol.
Ergos and trigger is not for everyone though, so see if you can handle one and feel it before buying.

Something different, but in the same caliber and same capacity, would be the FNX9, ergos are different, and trigger is very different. Quality is about as good.
