I'm getting an AR-15 because there was a break-in in my neighborhood.

Is 55 grain FMJ suitable for HD? My strategy is to stay up stairs with my gun so when I shoot him with fmj it'll penetrate through him and into the floor, but I also am curious what some good rounds are that don't over penetrate/expand/fragment/etc
>>
>>31886276
yes
>>
>>31886276
If you're inexperienced I'd go mossberg 500/ Remington 870
>>
If it can incapacitate a human being, it will most likely penetrate drywall.
>>

What you want is a frangible round, OP -- something designed to remove groundchucks. Hornady's VMAX comes to mind. And good on your for worrying about something besides yourself.

Get a cheapie red dot scope for it as well. I understand the ones from Bushnell are OK, and they run well under $100.

I want an AR any way because

>election
>>
>>31886276
Please don't shoot a rifle all over the place in a residential area.
>>
>>31886335
No, do not get a Bushnell TRS-25, because you won't have time or will forget (lol adrenaline) to turn it on, and if you leave it on the dot will dim so much it will be absolutely fucking worthless.

Just get TRITIUM NIGHT SIGHTS.

US militayr agrees, cheapest night sights.
>>
>>31886336
Ah. Well, at the very least Fmj isn't what you want. Pick soft point or what Phil recommends
>>
>>31886335
>>31886348

>optics

Surely iron sights and a flashlight would be perfectly fine for HD?
>>
>>31886418
It would, but i personally prefer dem beems (laser sights) for hd, unless you have the time to git gud at point shooting
>>
You want a round that dumps all of its energy once it hits something. Go to lgs (not walmart/dicks) and ask them for a home defese 5.56 round. You dont want over penetration, imagine missing and killing a family member/tv/pet
>>
>>31886462

Is energy dump more effective than hydrostatic shock?

When you say "break in" do you mean home invasion?
Or break in during work hours when nobody was home?
>>
>>31886541

The homeowner wasnt there
>>
>>31886313
AR is easier to use than a pump shotgun.
>>
>>31886418
Forget the light unless you have someone living with you.

I've heard military ball ammo expands and fragments well and is OK for home defense. If it was me, and my neighbors' kids, I'd want to make utterly sure. Forget about all the internet learning about how boollits kill people. You have a mag fed centerfire rifle. If the fucker gets up, SHOOT HIM AGAIN.

>>31886564
Protip: Hide your home defense longarm inside and above your closet door on a couple of nails. Someone ransacking your closet is unlikely to bend over backwards and look up.
>>
>>31886564
So basically you just want to buy an expensive toy for someone to steal?
>>
>>31886276
Just make a flamethrower and buy a chainsaw for home defense.
>>
>>31886276
It will do very well as long as you practice enough to decent shot placement.
>>
>>31886564
See this>>31886655
>>
>>31886276
So you're trying to shoot him from the top of the stairs?
>>
>>31886276

just get some hunting ammo

>>31886313
You're a stupid faggot. the AR 15 is the easiest firearm to use.
>>
>>31886418
Yes, OP this is the correct answer. Your flashlight will silhouette your front sight and at home defense ranges you can just put that on top of your target and shoot. It's basically point shooting. As you have only 1 focal plane it's really just as fast as a red dot too.

Just make sure to train using the light to flash/move/flash/move/flash/move instead of leaving it on.

here's some stuff to think about

http://preparedgunowners.com/2016/01/12/the-approved-list-of-5-56-nato-223-rem-self-defenseduty-ammo/

That site recommends a lot of barrier blind ammo, which is not ideal, being designed to penetrate barriers and whatnot. Still, lots of good info.

this one

http://www.alloutdoor.com/2015/02/24/home-defense-case-low-penetration-rounds/

is much more up your alley I think
