Only one I can think of off the top of my head that came close was Steven Green years ago. Basically one of the members of the jury was an absolute bleeding heart and it has to unanimous.

It's a difficult balancing act.

On the one hand, any soldier is a citizen of the United States with all of the rightful legal protections that entails. Curtailing any of them just opens up the possibility of abuse, obstruction of justice, and the manipulation of the system for the purpose of pursuing vendettas or carrying out an agenda.

On the other hand, military justice needs to be swift, unbiased, transparent, consistent, and severe if people are to respect it (see: what Wellington and Frederick the Great had to say on the matter, as well the case of the palace concubines from the Art of War). When a clear-cut case like that of that Bradley Manning scumbag takes years to resolve and ends with imprisonment rather than hanging or a guillotine, it gives the rest of the military and the rest of the world that we're soft.

I wish I could have a candid talk with some of the bigwigs about how they view this kind of issue.
