Smallest real round that would do well airburst would be at least .50 BMG, though because the power isn't kinetic mostly but chemical (HE) you could make the projectile bigger with less charge. Say, 20mm. You could have it semi automatic with a modestly sized magazine, say, 5 rounds. This is an XM25 CDTE.

I'm saying that in order to work effectively an airburst weapon would be basically some sort of XM25 type weapon, or alternatively any of the knockoffs other nations have made. Few are semi automatic, though.

Bolters are a shit idea. To defeat opponents with a load of armor the solution is not to even bother with a gun that fires weak projectiles, just throw an AT rocket at them. Even if every soldier is as strong as an MBT, if shitty autocannon rounds can penetrate their armor then a tandem warhead definitely can. Maybe even basic HEAT.

The ideal armament system would be a rocket launcher and a dozen rockets, plus a minigun-type weapon for unarmored enemies. You tell me what minor threats an infantryman with an anti tank rocket launcher, minigun, and fuckhuge body and armor can't take out. For everything else, send a tank.

imagine what you could do with a few sci-fiesque shooty ammo type on a modern battlefield:
