Looks like I need to save up a few hundred more dollars before jumping in to this.

Will the election results influence prices in the short term? I do not get paid until the 12th and I would like to start shooting a 'real gun' at my local range, now that I have been shooting a cheap rifle that uses .22 for about a month now.

Dammit, sorry, I know I'm being annoying and shill-tier, and that there's few reviews of them out there. But they really are excellent, and I hope that by spreading the word they catch on. Alright /akg/ i just picked up this SAR-2 and it has a naked muzzle, i want to fit a 74 brake on it and it seems the best way to do so is to buy Jmaccustoms AIMS thread adapter, (http://www.jmac-customs.com/products/aims-thread-conversion?variant=2831230723) see here. I want to know if i could hammer it on rather than pressing it on. im a college student and i dont really wan to drop 130+ on a press ill likely only use once in the foreseeable future. Pic related is my rifle. i posted in the thread before this but it seems like it was a bad time of day to do so. thanks for your advice and help /akg/

>>
>>31875562
looked into this, all i can find is Bulgarian surplus ones and they are a bit too large. The barrel on the SAR-2 is a few millimeters to slim for it to fit. Like i said, the AIMS thread adapter seems to be my best bet as it wont force me to cut the barrel in any way which i want to avoid in the very unlikely chance i happen upon a surplus Romanian AIMS-74 FSB.

>>
>>31875661
Possibly, but I wouldn't recommend it.
You'll likely gall the shit out of the barrel because hammer strikes are uneven in force and pressure.
Look into the "all thread" method of pressing components.
It's significantly less than a press, and not very real estate heavy as far as the room it takes to store away.

>How long do you think this will last?

The current ammo shortage has lasted longer than the Second World War did, with little sign that anything will get much better any time soon.
>>
>>31876183
I had a Korean mag in 7.62, the feed lips got marred up real bad, it fight tight and all but the it would jam if i loaded it all the way. My guess would be the marring of the feed lips had something to do with it.
>>
>>31876194
So the answer is to become a producer and sell commercially in my local area?

Would that work?
>>
>>31875611
Maybe shim it, if you can get it to come out concentric? Just offering suggestions just in case.

I have a 1990s Intrac imported Romy '74 and when I took the thread protector off I found that not only were there no threads, but the muzzle end of the barrel had been threaded and then the threads milled off, leaving (as you have) barely enough metal to thread it 1/2x28. CNC Warrior makes some appropriate muzzle devices that fit that thread pitch and have locking recesses for the latch pin in the front of the front sight base too.

So I was on KVAR looking at Arsenals and I noticed that among their milled rifles there are two varieties, the milled and the milled and forged, whats the difference aside from $200?
>>
>>31876224
You could try, I guess. But it isn't easy to get BATF approval or insurance for a new business manufacturing, for example, primers. There are no guarantees.

Lots of us have been just sitting on our savings, waiting and hoping ammo prices will come back down somewhat before we die of old age/civilization collapses/etc. As I said, there are no guarantees.

>>
>>31876365
The milled receivers made by Arsenal Bulgaria are from forged blanks. Years ago Arsenal milled their own receivers in the US, these I assume were not from forgings, but these offerings haven't been available anywhere except the secondhand market for a long time. Post links for the models you're talking about? Any given milled receiver rifle coming from Arsenal Bulgaria should have a forged receiver.

Thanks anon but im not going to try to shim an FSB, i did however find a press on thread adapter from Jmac customs that will give me a 22mm thread base which will in turn allow me to attach a CNC warrior 74 muzzle brake on it, id be satisfied with that for now. although its a press fit adapter another anon here steered me towards the "all thread" pressing method and it seems to much more feasible than a H frame at the moment, Toth tool makes a sweet all thread jig which isnt much cheaper than a press but looks alot more fool proof for what im doing considering i have no experience using a press.
>>
>>31875200
lol
>>
>>31876462
The receiver is described as forged in both of those links. I think the SLR-101 is just an older designation for Arsenal's milled rifles that isn't available anymore. The stock images used for both are the same, just slightly photoshopped.

>>31875200

evening mates, thinking of building an AK from a pre-folded 80% blank. already built an AR and while it was fun, I'm looking for something a little more in-depth (read: actually building something, not just assembling a box of parts). as far as I can tell theres like twenty billion different variations of AK design out there, one (or more) for each Soviet bloc country. so I can certainly build a rifle, but currently the question is "which rifle".

looking to get a parts kit that's reasonable-ish ($1000 is my hard limit, would prefer to spend $400-600), and has a fixed wood stock, normal (non-vertical-grip) handguard, and decent compatibility with aftermarket parts (going to get a US made barrel, among other things, for 922r compliance). i'll probably end up refinishing every part unless it's particularly beautiful to begin with (unlikely in my price range), so I'd prefer a kit that's common enough to not be considered destroying a piece of history when I end up refinishing it.

any ideas on what I should be looking at?

side question: do kalashnikov-pattern shotguns operate on the same receiver as a rifle? in other words, can I build a saiga or similar as well? because that'd be pretty alright

I understand the idea behind the buyer's guide, to stop people from asking the same questions in every thread. But the people who ask those questions are so helpless that the guide won't make a difference anyways. Look above, guy asking what the best AK for $450 is. The guide is pointless, the market is way too transient to make an effective guide, ammo is always available from different places, OP is not obligated to do something just because 3 people asked him to, and no matter what OP does he will never be able to please everybody so why bother. This. The guide should now be ordered by most available to most scarce (with the used market also being considered), with very generalized price approximations, and ordered by country of origin.

If you're just looking for an easy solution yes. You just need to consider the likelihood of more imports in the next 6-8 months before an "AWB". Good in my estimation. If you go 5.45 I would leverage into ammo a little harder

Pre bent blanks are all over the place. The main issue I had with that was rail placement and welding.

I believe there are bent and welded blanks, complete with compliance letter, where you only need to drill, rivet, and load up with your stuff.
Parts kits are...well, whatever you want. Because parts kits themselves are starting to dry up compared to their wide availability from even 5 years ago, you'll need to search a bit for a good deal. I personally went for a polish variant.

Be sure you have a line on proper tooling for the build. You didn't make any mention of having anything ready like shop presses or welding equipment.

No. The bullets bounce off people.

TRUE MILITARY FACT: since 1947 no one has ever been harmed with any Kalashnikov pattern firearm, nor any firearm in 7.62x39mm caliber. The bullets just bounce off everyone's skin. One tier-1 operator said "it tickles."
>>
>>31874996
What pisses me off is that the steel core 7.62x39mm ban is all Olympic Arms' fault. The made prototype OA-93s in 7.62x39mm for SHOT show '94 and in December they got a warning from Century Arms and NRA-ILA that making these would get it banned from import. But the owner and founder being the senile old fuck he was didn't do jack shit and refused to pull them.

PSO (POSP) 4x24 is a common scope for AK's.
Eastwave is in Canada. I've ordered from them and had no problem with customs. Pretty sure the price on their site would be syrup bucks so you'd have to convert.

http://eastwave.ca/products/scopes/posp4x24v.html

If you end up looking for one on ebay do NOT order one coming from china. It will be a knock off and will not be of good quality.
The ones from eastwave and Kalinka are either from russia or belarus and are good quality.
>>
>>31879989
These aren't even old and surplus.
>>
>>31880339
If that's the price in CAD then they're selling POSPs way cheaper than anywhere else. Kalinka wants about 300USD for them now.
>>
PO scopes and shit should work fine for 5.45 right? How close will the reticules be at different ranges?
>>
>>31880875
out to 600m or so the difference should be less than the thickness of the lines on the reticle, so it should be fine

and it's hard for me to imagine circumstances under which it'd be appropriate or wise to try to engage 600m+ targets with an AK anyway

just saying, even in the ongoing stuff in Afghanistan and Iraq, they keep telling us 90% of engagements in which the riflemen actually fire to engage targets, as opposed to suppressive fire and preventing the opposition from flanking or overrunning the SAW gunners, are within 100m. 98% are within 300m. even WWII-era stamped sheetmetal pistol-caliber SMGs are not as obsolete as you think they are.

The guns in question are both forged and milled. The rough shape is made as a forging and then all the details are milled out.

Forged is stronger than just milled, which is why when you have a "billet" AR receiver it's usually made thicker than a regular forged receiver.

A lot of us are boycotting CTD. They have a long-standing habit of, in the event of a panic, cancelling all orders in their system, including those for which inventory is present, then tripling their prices.

This is, in fact, illegal. Complaints have been put in to local authorities but I don't know if they've ever gotten their peepees smacked over it or not.

A lot of us refuse to do business with them.

A short justification of why each group should be avoided would be neat.

For instance, I have no clue why Lee Armory should be avoided. The easy answer is "because they fuck up builds", but it still leaves me kinda curious because I don't think I've read anything more on them.

It's still a pretty good jumping off point for someone who's shopping around and wants to know what all is available to them.

Something wrong with surplus?

>>31875666
Rear converted, then paid a poor gunsmith to do the rest. Total invested $800.

It's a Russian holo sight made by JUPITER(Valdai), I wouldn't exactly call it a copy.
Here is their website, http://valdai.su/ ,I think it looks pretty slick.
>>31884189
Honestly I didn't write that part, another anon made the 7.62x39 section and his had an avoid section, I merely put it all together so I have no idea on some of them. If anyone could shed light on why to avoid them, I'd be glad to add it.

There's a thread on akfiles in which people were posting chrono results. It's only 5 pages long. I only have about 1050 rounds of it myself so I didn't get taken too hard, but I'll probably stick with silver bear and monarch for now.

If I didn't need to worry about other calibers right now I might care more, but I'm way too concerned about stocking up on 5.56 and 9mm to spend money replacing 5.45 that comes in a little weak as long as it goes bang and hits what I'm aiming at.
>>
>>31875425

high standard is known for quality issues, and interter arms is I.O tier.
>>
>>31883478

the 60 grain mil spec 5.45 is running 2600-2700fps

123 grain 7.62x39 runs 2400 for reference, 60 grains going 2700 is pathetic, 69 grain tula 5.45 runs 2800, and other 5.45 from barnaul is running 2900-3000 like 7n6.

SG ammo payed extra for lacquer and sealant, then cut the costs on powder charge to make up for it, its junk.

Has anyone built one from a parts kit on here?

That doesn't really make sense because their 106-21 and 106-81 are supposedly different.

They list the 106-81 as the F model but state it has the siderail.

If I get it and it doesn't have the siderail I'm gonna be pissed.

It's not cheap, read the builders guide on akfiles, and watch the YouTube videos from mel64d, thedarknightbuilds, and a handful more.

well... does it cycle the rifle? does it poke holes in paper targets?

It's not like the Russian FMJ bullets have some kind of velocity-dependent behavior in soft tissue. They don't deform, they don't fragment, they just yaw, and they yaw the same at 2300 feet per second as they do at 3000.

Not saying it's optimum but it could be much worse. And I bet it would still hurt a lot to get shot with it.

I like my 20rd bake but i got it for free, that and the 1rd mag that he makes from dented akm mags.

Middle is the selector lever stop plate, it's the nub that keeps the selector lever from going down too far, it is riveted between the mag catch and the receiver.

What the fuck is a stamped of milled reciever vs a non stamped or milled.
I keep reading shit talk about those but have no idea what they are.
>>
>>31886235
Google milled receiver ak, than google stamped ak
>>
>>31886235
stamped: a piece of sheet metal stamped into the form of an AK receiver
Milled; a solid chunk of metal milled into an AK receiver
in a nutshell.
you decide which is best for you, although either one will be fine.
>>
>>31886182
How much is too much?
>>
>>31886235
All am receivers are ether stamped or milled, if they are stamped that mean that they where made by taking a 1mm sheet of steel and using a hydraulic press to "stamp" it into shape. A milled receiver is made from a solid steel pice by removing the material until it had the desired shape. Milledare More durable, stamped is lighter and cheap
