Mini-14 is decent, it's just that you can get a superior entry level AR-15 for less. That is the reason it gets a bad rap IMHO.

Other negatives are that the older ones had thin barrels, so not as accurate. This can be upgraded with an accustrut. The newer ones have thicker barrels. The proprietary mags are a downer, but you can buy mags over time.

I've never fired an M1A but I do know .308 is a good cartridge, pretty common, and these rifles have a pretty good rap, despite being heavy.

Plus you could always look at old Mausers, SKS, Mosin Nagants, M1 Carbines.
