Hey /k/, I'm going to be deployed soon (not American) and I'm looking for new watches as my old Pro Treks finally died. I need something sturdy and preferably with option to charge via sun. I don't want anything with GPS as they eat up through battery too much.

What do you wear? Watches general I guess.
>>
>>31863579
Here's a poorfag option that is still extremely good.

Casio Men's AE1200WH-1A Black Analog Digital Multi-Function Watch

It's an amazing watch, has international times, very sturdy and has a long battery life. Only issue is it isn't a tacticool watch and doesn't have any of the extra apps or benefits of a more expensive watch like Suunto, but it's a good replacement watch to take incase your other breaks
>>
Casio rangeman
>>
>>31863633
Thanks anon, I'll take a look at those. I don't really care about tacticool shit, you have other equipment for that. I'm looking at prolonged periods of time without solid access to electricity so I need either very long battery life or better solar recharge. Some compass and alarm would be nice also.

>>31863646
I'll check those. Thanks.
>>
>>31863652
well you're in luck, the battery has a 10 year lifespan on average. I'd also suggest getting a NATO watch strap as its more comfortable than the straps it comes with (but be warned it's a pain in the ass to put on the strap and you gotta file down a bit of the plastic)

I got one of the discontinued Casio Tough-Solar G-Shock analogs. I really like it.

I also owned a Suunto Core that I hated and a Casio Pathfinder. The Pathfinder was bueno and cheaper than the G-shock I have now but not as aesthetic.

Trust me man, GW-5610

You have tons of options for looks, but the classic 5610 is the absolute boss and incredibly accurate.

And it looks like something out of the 90's.

>>
OP, if you want a tough watch with good features, you want a G-Shock of some kind.

For under $100 you can get a GW-6900, which is an updated version of a watch that was endorsed for use by NASA and various U.S. SF groups. In terms of features, it's shock resistant, water resistance to 660 feet, has a stopwatch, a countdown timer, 4 or 5 programmable alarms, and a nice bright illuminator that can be set to either manual/automatic operation. On top of all of this, it's solar powered (never needs batteries) and has the ability to synchronize its time with atomic clocks in 6 locations from around the world, meaning that it's an incredibly accurate timepiece.

For under $200, you can get a GW-9400 (Rangeman), which has all of the features of the 6900 and adds a digital compass, altimeter, barometer, thermometer, and projected sunrise/sunset times for the day.

If money is no expense, you can buy a GWF-D1000B-1 (New model Frogman), which has too many features for me to list here. It's probably the best diving watch in the world and has a pricetag to match.
>>
>>31863633
Holy shit
Are you me? I just bought that last week. Very happy with it.
>>

Second that on the rangeman. The digital compass is amazing. The only thing I don't like is how long it stays illuminated when you hit the illumination button. There needs to be a night mode.

I like my GW-6900 a lot. Had it a year and a half. Very durable, looks as new as when I bought it. Solar charging works very well. Only time the power meter dropped a notch was after a month of working nights with no sun exposure. Seems to charge fast too. Would buy again.

What kind of issues? I've had my Core for 7 years or so and beat the hell out of it (it was my everyday watch while working as a mechanic), and the watch itself has been dead reliable. The only thing that's ever gone wrong was that the strap keeper loop fell apart about a year ago.

The 6900 is largely outclassed by both the 5600 (and the solar 5600s) and the GD-350 its true successor

Also those "eyes" it has are fucking useless and take up screen space.

I only like old school 6400s
>>
>>31868600

>>
>>31863579
I got by for 4 years wearing a $10 Casio.

My advice is something with a backlight for sure, for telling time at night.
>>
>>31863633
Basically all of the Casio men's sports watches have a 5+ year battery life. I bought a basic G-Shock 1199 about five years ago now, and it's held up fine, still on the original battery.

Only thing I'd recommend, is getting to know how to open it up and reset the watch, because sometimes if it gets a nasty jolt or hit, the watch will go blank like it's dead, and you might have to reset it from the circuit inside. Should have it marked on there anyway. Had to do that with mine after it got thrown against a brick wall.
>>
>>31869308
Also, while the fancy solar cell ones are nice, they can also have a fancy battery.

If you get a watch that takes CR2032 or CR2025 type battery, you can find them anywhere in the world at any time.

You could be walking down an iceberg in Antarctica when your battery goes flat, just ask the nearest penguin, I guarantee they'll have one for sale for a few sardines.
>>
>>31869325

Solar casios are still better.

The battery only drains if it fluctuates between high-medium-low

I've had my solar for years always on high battery

Didn't look recently (mine is still like new), but looks like there's plenty of them on Amazon, look for "titanium sapphire". This seems to fit the bill: https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SGG735-Titanium-Bracelet-Watch/dp/B000X5LMB8 - but if you wanna splurge, then you can: https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-Ceramic-Titanium-LIMITED-SSE091/dp/B01LYSGCEI/

I'd be very careful about "warranty provided by X instead of the manufacturer" - some (Costco's been known for that) import subpar models intended for third world countries and sell them "with their warranty". These are usually crap.

For anyone considering Suunto, don't buy the Core or any other model that's made in China. The models that are made in Finland are a million times more sturdy and reliable. Nothing like the Core. Traverse Alpha is probably their best model for military use. I previously had a Core and now the regular Traverse and the difference between them is night and day.

Any atomic and solar G-Shock

I don't know why you would bother with anything else. You literally put it on and never ever have to fuck with it until the rechargeable battery dies in 25+ years. It sets itself every night to the nearest atomic clock and a full battery charge will last 6 months with zero light

I'd recommend a Casio G-Shock as pictured here: >>31864632

Whatever you do, do NOT get a Luminox. Somehow, their fancy "swiss-made" watches are so Seal Team 6 tough that they break without even experiencing any external trauma.
>>
>>
Just get any old pos g-shock. Spend as much or as little as you're comfortable with.
Personally, I prefer a watch with indicators since it doubles as a compass in a pinch.
>>
>>31878774
Like I said, it's much more sturdy than Core and apart from the mineral glass I don't worry about its durability at all. Battery lasts pretty long. I only need to charge it once or twice a month but I only ever use the GPS to check my current location, not track all the time. Other features work as promised, although I haven't tried the Bluetooth sync, because my phone is too old and I don't have the heart rate belt. Compass is vastly improved over the one in Core. It doesn't jump around and doesn't lose its calibration ever.
I bought it just before the Alpha was announced, so it was unlucky on my part, because I would have gone with the Alpha. The sapphire glass and red backlight are worth the price difference in my opinion. Would make it much better for my use.
Apart from the blue backlight and mineral glass, my only real complaint is lack of 6000 MRAD compass (6400 is available). It would be nice to have until we fully switch to 6400. The top left button accesses quick menu but only on screens where you don't have some sort of stopwatch, so sometimes I forget that and accidentally start timing but I can't really blame the watch for it, because there's bound to be some overlapping features.
I say go for the Alpha. The price difference isn't that much and you get a watch that works much better in the dark and you don't worry about the glass.

650$? Are you fucking joking? It is a God damn watch. If you have a cell phone you don't need a watch. The only reasons to have one is for Inna woods or wherever with no cell recharging or service and a bunch of hassle. The other other reason is fashion. 650$ for a work horse watch is stupid. A 65$ one will work just as well. 650$ for a fashion watch that is trying to look as plain and working ascetic as that is retarded. *drops mic*
