If you can, do what I did. Go to a gun range, rent both, and see which feels better. If you can't get to a range, hit up a store or gun show and at least shoulder a few.

There are so many reasons to go with an AR before an AK. Back when a WASR was $350 and a bottom of the barrel AR was $1000 I'd have said AK- I even went that route - but the AR is the better rifle in the beginning and end.

I went for an ar first. I plan to get an AK too but I figure if there's ever a happening 5.56/.223 will probably be the more plentiful ammo to scavenge.

All the more reason for OP to buy an AK now. They're only going to go up in price. Even when Trump wins, I doubt getting rid of import laws will be that big of a concern for him so I don't think the sanctions are going anywhere. Meanwhile AR's will keep dropping in price since it seems like everyone and their mom makes AR parts these days.

Avoid Century Arms International and Inter-Ordinance like the plague, their rifles are built like shit and are made of shit.

Look at some Destructive Devices Inc. Or Definitive Arms rifles if you want something of decent quality.

Arsenal is also ok but a little overpriced for what you get, but still not bad, especially if you get a good deal.

Assuming you are strictly looking between a 762 ak an 556 ar...
I like aks with ak-74 features(or a vz58/sks) more personally by far, and think the extra punch and recoil of 762x39 makes it more fun to hit things with.
Go to a gunshop and hold both and buy what you like best.
If you like punching paper, AR will most likely treat you best as a whole. If you are like me and love watching mud fly and plinking like that, 762x39 will be a real treat.

Well OP, chances are you won't be operationally operating innawoods while fighting zombies or the government. So what you need to look are factors such as ammo prices and availability, as well as availability of replacement parts and aftermarket accessories. You also need to think about what you're going to use your new rifle for. Are you just going to plink with it, or are you going to hunt with it too? Based on the answers to these questions, make a rational decision.

Me personally, if I could only have one or the other I'd buy an AR. All it takes is the damn liberals creating an import ban and all those surplus parts go bye bye.

QUALITY ad's from foreign military arsenals are more expensive then AR's right now

SLR,SGL,SAM,VEPR, all are at $1000 plus, so yes, AR15's are for people who can't afford a AK.

My first "combat" rifle was a N-PAP.

Good, high quality AK at a reasonable price. Ya the aftermarket is inferior to other AKs but the factory furniture is perfectly servicable now that they got rid of the cheek destroying stocks.

Ultimately I think you get more bang for your buck with an AK. ARs are all about aftermarket, which means spending money on customizing it. To me, AKs are a superior choice if you just want a rifle and dont want to fuck around with swapping shit on it to make it gucci.
