Hey /k/, long story short I've been kicking around the idea of building an AR for quite some time. I currently have a concealed carry Walther 9mm and have grown up shooting rifles with my father. The only issue is that my good friend from highschool is trying to get me back into playing paintball with him. So basically I can either build the AR or get a decent paintball set up. I'm trying to compare which I'll actually use more/which is the better investment and would like your guys opinions. Either gun I would plan on shooting at least every other week, it's more or less what will be a better investment. I do have a daughter that I'd love to teach how to shoot on a gun I built and keep it in my family, so that's a pretty big reason I'm leaning towards just building an AR. But his counter arguement is that I'll never use it other than shooting at paper for an hour or two

>better investment
Your paintball gear will depreciate like a perishable food item and it will never go up in value, especially if it sees any use at all.
Your firearm, on the other hand, will drop about 20% in value and will likely hold there or skyrocket over the course of your lifetime. Firearms are a better assets than precious metals or stocks plus they're easier to store and sell if need be. A paintball gun isn't even an asset. It ranks with old hockey sticks and football pads that you can take to a hock shop for maybe a few bucks. If for no one else, do it for your daughter so she inherits something of value in 30 years instead of an old used toy that will likely be broken by that point.

I'd build an 80% lower so I wouldn't be able to sell it anyway because of no serial #. But you do make good points, I've been 98% on the AR the whole time. My wife was giving me shit for it the other day as well because I "already have a gun", in regards to my 9mm carry. Almost had to divorce her that day

you can sell it you just cant make a business out of it

I feel like you already know the right answer and you're trying to justify it through other people. You know what to do anon, you know the right choice. when you give your daughter the rifle you built she'll be much better suited to fight off Jamal with 5.56 rather than small plastic balls of paint.

Why not both?
Buy the lower (80% or stripped), then buy the parts you like as they come on sale and you have a few extra bucks. You don't have to buy and build your AR all at once. Then you can buy the paintball equipment/supplies.
Most of /k/ will probably tell you to build the AR. I would recommend spending time with your friend.

You can sell it, as the other guy said, you just can't make a business out of it, you just have to stamp your own serial onto it, like "ANON.AR.01" or something like that (use your own first name or whatever)

That can be done very effectively, although I'd recommend getting a read on common prices now, as a baseline, and working up some different options. Some parts should always be bought as kits; lower parts kits, forward assists/upper parts kits, delta ring assemblies, etc. You may find a PSA kit makes everything a lot cheaper than buying piecemeal. They're wiped out now, which makes me think they may be saving stock for Black Friday (I know that's fucking retarded, but companies do it) http://palmettostatearmory.com/ar-15-05/rifle-kits.html.

This is a great answer OP but do as you want

Also, consider buying a preassembled upper instead of building one. Headspace shouldn't be an issue with a 5.56 AR anyway, but going with a prebuilt upper pretty much ensures it, and they can be cheap, too.
Here, have some AR porn to help tide you over. The furniture is Boyd's laminate.

Huh, didn't attach.

That's a pretty good idea anon. My coworker builds ARs pretty often and is going to build it with me so it's technically not selling. I'm meeting up with him today to talk prices of everything. I do have any older paintball gun from when I use to play, I'm honestly probably just going to run that for awhile to make sure I want to drop more money into it. So the AR will be the priority and I'll just customize it over time. I've been told an AR is like adult Legos that you can constantly build into different things

Shit, I'll have to remember that..

Damn that's beautiful
>>31860649
Why would you use an 80% when anderson lowers exist?
>>31861275
Would I be better off just buying a stock AR? It seems the price difference is only like 20$ plus shipping on lowers seems to be about a month wait
