Next Gen Ultra Long Range SAM for the PLAN successfully tested.

Rumored to be the HHQ-8 500km SAM.
>>
>>31851837
The booster-stage is gigantic.

Nearly as long as the missile is.
>>
>>31851847
Cold launched as well.

It's said that this missile will only be equipped on China's Type 055 Cruisers, as only they have the 9m deep VLS cells to house those ultra long SAMs.

Satellites show that the modules for a second Type 055 appeared in Shanghai.

Picture is from 11th October and thus obsolete already. The 1st 055's hull parts have long been welded together...

This means that each Type 055, equipped with 128 VLS, will be able to create a no-fly zone of 500km radius.

Even if the missile really does have a 500km range, that is not how it works.
>>
>>31851857
>~9m missile
>850mm diameter VLS, cold launch enables the missile to use the full size of the cannister
>booster is about 50% of the total length

Holy fuck. Is this a shipborne S-500?
>>
>>31851884
>This means that each Type 055, equipped with 128 VLS, will be able to create a no-fly zone of 500km radius.

>What is horizon
>What is sea skimming

China has one carrier and not enough forward observers to give a Type 055 the mythical range.

Soon they will have a second carrier.

And it is not that they dont have a shitload of AWACS. Even their Z-18J AEW&C helos can take over that job with their long range AESA.

One whole helicopter on a Type 052D. Not very scary when a helicopter will be shot down pretty quick vs a CSG. China's gonna need more than one helicopter in their Type 055 if they thing they want to be taken seriously.
>>
>>31852276
The SM-3 cant shoot down planes.

It's exoatmospheric KKV can only do that: crash into exoatmospheric objects.

055 will have two heavy helicopters. It's a fucking 180m ship with 22m beam.

Generally, it is expected that the 055 will serve as the Carrier escort. So the carrier will have enough AEW&C onboard.

China's got a lot of firepower but their killchain is quite poor. One carrier isn't going to cut it.

Theres a world of difference between a pork defense contractor and an actually competitive shipyard

Definately designing from the ground up with modern technology in mind would also do worlds of good.
>>
>>31852423
they are kinda suffering from overcapacities.

Just a few days ago, the 40th 056 corvette was launched. 40 in barely 3 years.

That contract can barely satisfy the 4 shipbuilders that are doing the 056, thus they pressure the government to allow them to build destroyers as well. And one thing leads to another.
>>
>>31851884
Thats not how that works.
>>
>>31851837

So we can safely assume that this is intended to be an SM-3 equivalent.
>>
>>31852865
Could be, but even the SM-3 does not have such a huge booster stage.

If you looked at all the other ABM missiles, you will see that they barely exceed 7 meters in length.

SM-3 is 6.55 meters, with 1.4 meter booster
THAAD is 6.17 meters in total

But this one looks to be 9 meters long, which is nearly 50% booster.

You dont need so much booster for getting into orbit. And once you are in the orbit, you do not need traditional rocket engine fuel for course correction anymore, as you already cruising with orbital velocities (hence the long range of the SM-3IIA, being 2500km).

But you need those boosters if you want to achieve a long range within earth atmosphere. This is why the S-400's 40N6 is such a large missile.

With a dual-pulse double high parabolic trajectory like this, it does.

Booster is large. First stage makes it climb to 35km and 2nd stage to 40km before it seperates.
Then it cruises downward for the next 400km until it intercepts a aerial target cruising at 15km altitude in 500km range.

For all purposes, creating a no fly zone below 15km altitude in 500km distance is basically having a aerial denial zone of 500km radius.

Sure, I know that the F-22 has a ceiling of 20km.. so what? Then it will get shot down at 350km range.

Like the F-35? I wonder if the J-20 will be able to guide missiles fired from surface launchers that are blind to the target.
>>
>>31852235
They could already intercept of deny area for high altitude targets, Such as AWAC, ECM warfare planes and tactical aircrafts doing radar reconnaissances from high altitude. Say goodbye to "we stay at safe range" AWACs tactics. Because there would be no safe range.

>but we stay below radar horizon!
Good. So you can't detect Type 055 yourself. It really flips tables in naval aviation tactics.
>>
>>31853957
>Good. So you can't detect Type 055 yourself. It really flips tables in naval aviation tactics.

This is wrong.

Thanks to the inverse square law, radar energy can be detected at a range further than it can provide a good return.
So you can always detect a radar further than it can see you.

In addition, due to scattering effects, the ESM sensor does not need to have line of sight while the radar itself does.

This is why a radiating object is always at a disadvantage.
>>
>>31853957
It still doesn't outrange an AWAC aircraft's radar. Especially if they are flying high enough to overcome radar horizon at 500+ km.
>>
>>31853993
No AWACS has a 500km range radar either. Even the longest ranged one, the KJ-2000, has only 470km range.

And the 055 has quite good stealth characteristics.

>So you can always detect a radar further than it can see you.

>In addition, due to scattering effects, the ESM sensor does not need to have line of sight while the radar itself does.
1. Scattering works both ways and allows radar to see further than optical line of sight.
2. Scattering depends of wavelength. in typical short wave S band scattering doesn't increase radar horizon considerably.

The US has far more sea based AESA systems than China does.

If you're predicating the idea that China has more AESA or better systems than the US does, this notion is predicated entierly on the idea China has some enormous secret arsenal of standardized craft with these sensors and not a mix-match of experimental equipment.

The I3 and multi-layered long range scanning power of the US tops China and will continue to do so until China can successfully create a compartment of competent carriers and naval aviation aircraft capable of matching the USs compartment of aircraft and ships.

The Chineese until that time will continue to have a bunch of unique and decent equipment but basically lack any utility as they have neither reached a standardization on a small compartment of systems nor have they reached anything resembling integration of these systems.

When Germany United it went overnight from being a cluster of reletivly strong defensive powers to the worlds largest land power at a time when China was still getting its ass turned inside out by 23 nations.

In WWII China lost to Japan. Without American intervention China would have lost far more people.

China's military history is far from glorious. There is no great tactical or strategic Chineese victory showcasing the might or forward though of the Chineese military in living memory, and there wasn't in the fringes of our living memories living memory, nor thereafter for several generations. Also the Abrams frontal RHAe value is usually Conservatively assumed to be 1, 100mm RHAe vs long rod penetrators but HEAT tends to vary widely, I've heard as low as 1,450 for the M1A2 to as high as 2200. Of course this comes to the problem that HEAT has more factors than just the charge going for it. Liner, diameter and more play a role more and more and, while you might crank 1,100mm RHAe out of a HEAT jet, if that device is huge then the jet displaces energy faster against composite and as such has reduced effectivness.

Malaysia to buy navy vessels from China in blow to U.S.

>Najib's visit follows that of the Philippines president Rodrigo Duterte, who announced the country's "separation" from the United States and signed a raft of memoranda of understanding for Chinese investment in the country.

>Last week, Malaysia announced a 2 billion ringgit ($476.19 million) cut to its 2017 defense budget from last year's levels.

>A project to develop an amphibious corps was among those jettisoned, said Euan Graham, director of the international security program at the Lowy Institute, a Sydney-based think-tank.

>"So a U.S.-backed initiative has effectively died now," Graham said. "At the same time, a new bridge has been opened to China. If you put those together, whether it's been by Malaysia's design or not, it does send a combined signal of pulling back from the U.S. and outreach to China."
