Just get an old surplus steel helmet for like ten bucks. It'll stop shrapnel and most handgun rounds just like Kevlar ones that cost hundreds. No helmet will stop rifle rounds unless you've got money pouring out of your ass.

This, modern helmets are more about all the shit you can bolt onto them. Though I think the US Army ones are supposed to be rated to stop a 5.56 from like 300m though.

With rifle rounds it's all about the distance. My brother in law got hit in the helmet with 7.62 in Afghanistan. But the shooter was so far away (they never found him) that he just got knocked unconscious.

You don't want a helmet, they're heavy and annoying.

I'd only wear a helmet if it was likely I was going to get into a firefight. They are better to use with NVGs than skull crushers, though.
