It will go rancid if you don't polymerise it. I wouldn't recommend doing this on the contact parts of a firearm like the slide. It will protect it from rust and abrasion but it will add some layers that could cause bending or jamming. I'm sure there are better substances that will do this for a firearm anyway. The reason you use food grade oils on a cast iron pan is because you're going to be eating off it.

Actually the "no soap" thing is from back in the early days of soaps where home-made lye soap was the common thing and quality control wasn't really a thing, so while one guy's soap might be fine in cast, anothers would eat right through the patina to bare metal.

Nowadays, your common dish detergent isn't tought enough to cut through your seasoning because that's designed for breaking down regular fats and short chain oils, polymerized oils comparatively are long chain molecules and don't come apart nearly as easily, that's why it takes a few hours to get your first layer of polymerized oil to form properly. If you do it wrong what happens is the incomplete long chain molecules start breaking apart and your patina will flake off when you're cooking.
