Well, /k/? Why didn't anyone make rock armor?
>not too heavy
>cheaper than iron/steel/whatever chestplates
>way easier to make, just shove in some burlap sack
>apparently even better than steel especially against bullets/probably bolts and arrows too
Surely some civilization tried it, but why wasnt it used on mass?

No reason to carry around rocks as body armor when steel and ceramic plates to stop rifle rounds exist.
>>31840422
yea but you must fit the paleo armor kvlt, prehistoric gun fights and ect
>>31840422
I'm not saying in modern times, I'm saying for that period in time where no one could really figure out some reliable armor to stop bullets, 1400 to 1900 or so
>>31840428
Also seems like prehistoric groups or native americans etc could have made something like this very easily, but instead they fumbled around trying to loop bone together and mesh leather together

OP has a point, and, I have no clue. Rock armor. I'm sold.
rock armor is not aesthetic enough

No, not really

Have you ever tried to shove a leaf bladed spear or slice a rapier through a few layers of rawhide and some bone?
>Of course not you dont even know what rawhide is
Effective against everything but bullets at point blank. Was the soft body armor of the day. Europeans used shit like that too before guns were popular and a while after.

You have a point but again, why didnt Eurasians from 1400-1900 use this kind of stuff? Say you were a soldier in 1750, about to meet another army and you were in rank and file on the front lines, why wouldn't you want to make some kind of rock protection? Looking at the video it only took 2 slabs to stop a 7.62x39, and thats about as powerful as a musket was back then

>>31840400
Rock is heavy as fuck.
>>31840932
>>31841033
From the video it didn't look too heavy at all, just some lava rock which is pretty light. We're not talking granite here
itt OP advertises his youtube channel
>>31841081
pumice is very light.
It's also extremely weak - you can crush it with your fist, and if you were wearing pumice armour, any projectile would go straight through and induce shitloads of carcinogenic volcanic ash into the wound, so even if the wound is non-fatal you're fucked in the long run. Great fucking job

>what is a buff coat, standard European infantry uniform until the early 1700s?

Because ancient people were smart enough to know that rock armor is a tucking stupid idea.

Went outside and picked up a rock. It's not that heavy.
Just a bit heavier than a steel plate.

Muskets were often cold loaded to save powder, especially when volley firing at range.
> Say you were a soldier in 1750, about to meet another army and you were in rank and file on the front lines
Well if you're in an army, it's up to what your commander said you could have, you rascalious civilian, you.
Breastplates gained popularity in the 1800s with the development of shrapnel, however.
>>31840694
Two WW2 tank armour thick slabs on top of each managed to mostly stop a bullet, while being annihilated in the process, sending shrapnel flying all around.
The weight simply isn't in any way justified by the protection offered. Iron is a superior material by far, and even there most people reached the conclusion that the weight necessary for decent protection stopped being worth it back in the late 17th century.
So feel free to strap a bag of rocks to your chest. But you've marched all night, your unit needs to be on top of that hill in a hurry, and there's a guy with a sword behind you who will make sure you either keep up or die trying.

Isn't that what ceramic armor basically is?
>this thread
Natural ceramics have poor tensile strength and fracture toughness
>>31840400
there is no rock out there that is strong and light. go throw some strong stone in a burlap bag and carry it around for 5 mins and tell me again how practical your idea is...

>>31843888
Go fill 100 sandbags then get back to me.
>>31840400
>not too heavy
Most rock that you could find in abundance that could be light enough to worn is too brittle to be practical armor. A good armor is not good do to it's hardness, it's good due to it's ability to deflect and/or absorb incoming blows. Rock is not flexible and too brittle. Also, trying to fashion armor our of rock would be a bitch. Other materials are just so much better.
>>31844458
Also before anybody says >plates plates are ceramic, not stone. OP implied armor made from rock along the lines of stuff like marble or granite.
>>31844377
It is, for the protection offered. Steel or similar metals offer much more efficient protection per pound of weight it adds.
>>31843105
Isn't that to protect them for the 72 virgins they believe in?
>>31844458
Flint would be the best naturally occurring rock material, it flakes instead of shattering. Obviously diamond armour if we want to get currazy, but it's no rock.
>>31840400
Too heavy and difficult to cut and shape
>>31844573
They problem with flint would be it could create sharp flakes when struck, and if those flakes get into any wounds inflicted your own armor will cause more harm than the weapon probably did.
>>31844584
Flack jack/anti spalling material
>>31840400
It's "en masse" and you're still using it wrong. Worst thread on /k/
OP...are you describing stone walls?
