Was 8x57 the most popular rifle cartridge of the early 20th Century?
>>
Prior to WW1 I would actually say 7x57mm was; 8x57mm was only adopted by two countries before 1914; the German Empire and The Vatican.

Throw 9mm Luger into the mix, and it sounds like German cartridges as a whole were pretty widespread at the time.
>>
>>31839655
Oh yeah, I mean 7x57mm and 7.65x53mm ruled everything south of the Rio Grande for 50 years.
>>
>>31839568
nope, many more adopted it.

were at the time? 9x19 saw widespread adoption after WW2.

>>31840864
I'm only asking about the first half of the 20th Century though.
>>
>>31838637
What about 7.62x39?

7.92 Mauser (military) / 30.06 (civilian)

Consider the Chinese also used it in the Hanyang rifle in the earlier non-spitzer format.

.303 British

The sun never sets on the British Empire!
>>
>>31844777
The only service cartridge I can think of that's even worse than .303 is 8mm Lebel. Maybe (maybe) 8x56R.
>>
>>31844752
Oh yeah, I always forget about the inscrutable Han. They also used 7x57 and 6.8x58mm in their actual pre-WW1 Mausers though.

This is a great read, actually.

So, let's review:
7,92x57 IS
6.5x55 Swede/Norge
7x57 Spanish
7.65x53 Argentine/Belgian
.30-06
.303 British (In the P14 mauser-derived rifle)
6.5x50 Arisaka
7.7x58 Arisaka

What other military Mauser chamberings am I missing?

>>31845168
6.8x58mm Chinese
8x50mmR Siamese
7.62NATO
8x63mm m/32 (Sweden)

what the hell is wrong with .303 british, it kills shit dead and was reliable and well regarded when in service
>>
>>31845896
>rimmed
>highly tapered
>underpowered compared to other full-size rifle rounds

Mostly it didn't age well. The Lee-Enfield rifle worked perfectly with it, but the British tried to replace both the SMLE and .303 twice, first with the P13 and later with the Pedersen. They just kept getting interrupted by World Wars.
>>
>>31845957
>rimmed
>highly tapered
neither of which proved a problem in service the weapons being no more likely to jam than any other.

>underpowered compared to other full-size rifle rounds
and combat experience showed that it and all other rifle rounds were overpowered relative to what was actually needed for combat, in terms of wounding potential the .303 with the mk VII bullet was if anything superior to any other rifle round of the world wars
>>
>>31845957
what is tapered?
