Was 8x57 the most popular rifle cartridge of the early 20th Century?

Prior to WW1 I would actually say 7x57mm was; 8x57mm was only adopted by two countries before 1914; the German Empire and The Vatican.

what the hell is wrong with .303 british, it kills shit dead and was reliable and well regarded when in service

Mostly it didn't age well. The Lee-Enfield rifle worked perfectly with it, but the British tried to replace both the SMLE and .303 twice, first with the P13 and later with the Pedersen. They just kept getting interrupted by World Wars.
