What's is /k/'s opinion on PSL's with a shorter than 20" barrel like pic related? Anyone have any experience or know anything about them?

People don't talk about PSL/SVD on this board enough so let's get this going.

No experience with the para models but I love love love my full size PSL. Shot this 5rd group the other day.
>>
>>31834795
A vepr with a 16-20 inch barrel is better in every way except mag capacity

Flimsy barrel is flimsy.

Also, due to the twist rate only certain types of ammo can be used.

I love the look, but it's just not worth the money.

Could you elaborate on those two points?

>Could you elaborate on those two points?

The thin barrel reduces weight but also causes the barrel to be more severely impacted by heat. Shots will start stringing faster.

As for the ammo, the weapon (both barrel twist and gas system) are tuned for "light" ball ammo. It will not shoot well with more common heavy ball rounds. Light is around 147 to 152gr. Bullet weights greater than 160gr should not be used unless in an emergency.
If you do fire heavier ammo, be sure to at the very least first buy a heavier recoil spring.

Looks familiar.

Best $375 I ever spent.
>>

Thank you for that, anon. It's always nice to see some actual intelligence on this board rather than seeing simple questions devolve into memes and strawman arguments.

What would be the consequence of firing a heavier ball with and without the heavier recoil spring? Are we talking severe effect to accuracy or catastrophic malfunction?
>>
My receiver exploded. Sold as a parts kit.

Honestly I just want an AK sized version of this. Would be so much cooler

Mostly shitty accuracy, but most increases the chances of premature wear and/or failure.
I see no reason why you'd risk it.

PSLs have gotten way more expensive in euroland now. If they were 375, I'd get one and mod it, but now they're like 1500 euros new...
>>
>>31835257

Some folks have had the rear receiver trunnion fracture from the bolt carrier slamming too heavily into it. Others have reported years of trouble free service. I tend to take it easy and only shoot light ball surplus. When I load heavy bullets I keep my powder charge pretty conservative to prevent any undue stress. My PSLs love all the Sierra .311 offerings.

Many thanks to both of you Anons for answering my questions.

So let's talk about modding. Since the front sight post is backup up completely to the gas block, I would like to find a way to install a glass block and front sight combo. Would there be any feasible way of accomplishing this? Would I be able to have an AK front sight gas block combo modified to fit? Or could I find an offering to buy somewhere?

Also we have 54R threads here and there, but they usually end pre-maturley due to lack of discussion

I've got a "paratrooper." It's good to go.

I have retarded eyes so I may replace the scope since it is one of the older ones that doesn't have adjustments for the eye-piece and I apparently am one of the very few people who has trouble seeing the plane the reticle is in within 20 yards.

Not that 20 yards matters when using the optic, but I do like pulling it out and just looking at stuff around my home with it when I'm bored and don't have time to hit the range. It works perfectly fine at distance.
>>
>>31834795
just remember, it's not an SVD clone, it's basically a long AK chambered in 54r. It works great, it's hard to find mags sometimes and many of them are in rough shape.
>>
>>31835267
how'd that happen?
>>
>>31835267
>>31836750
Also interested in how that happened.

Pic related with a 20 - 40 rd mag would be the perfect truck gun.

Kindof ugly IMO since the stock is very disproportionate to the size of the shortened gun, but It'd offer some amazing fireballs.
My only experience is with a full size, and I don't see what'd be so different about it's operation other than looks for the most part.
>>31835141
>Shots will start stringing faster.
I've heard this 100 times over, never experienced it. And it's a scoped rifle, not really a magdumpy gun for me.
>more common heavy ball rounds
what alternate universe do you live in where heavy ball 54r ammo is easier to find?
Even if you are talking commercial ammo, it's piss-easy to find both fmj and hunting cartridges at 150gr.
Also, I've used heavy ball in my mosin and find it to be very unattractive to shoot. I only like it to give a slightly better ice-busting in frozen ditches for fun.
>>31835390
On top of the rear of the receiver being weaker, the bolt/carrier/piston is bigger and heavier than normal aks or veprs. It comes back with a lot of force when you use heavy ball.
>>
>>31838489
??????????????????????
>>
>>31838474
nigga, that's a horrible idea for multiple reasons, the least of which being 7.62x54R doesn't like magazines larger than ~10 rds.

just get a Yugo M92 and be done with it

>>31838610
I'm guessing he's buttmad that whoever made that "beauty" trashed a somewhat decent rifle
>>
>>31838743
If he had the parts, couldn't he make that into a full sized PSL again?
What exactly did he do to even make it so small in the first place?

>And it's a scoped rifle, not really a magdumpy gun for me.

It's a magazine fed 7.62x54R AK. So people have certain expectations about the abuse it can take.

>what alternate universe do you live in where heavy ball 54r ammo is easier to find?

Europe. ;)
