M240 replaced it. M60 is made a bit too cheaply and the original models wore out prematurely. They wanted something more rugged so the added weight and cost of the M240 was worth it.

M249 is incomparable because of the lower caliber. It's a squad LMG. Same with RPK.
PKM is comparable.

As decent as they were brand new in Nam', they were a fucking nightmare in the years that followed

I've heard that with inexperienced users it could have a mind of its own and fire. Not sure if that's true but I've heard it had a lot of issues. Namely that things wore out faster than they should for a machine gun.

I know the newest model does well in function but too early to tell if they fixed the early wear issues. But 240 has better accessory support
