chemical gasses is very broad, ranging from water vapor to sarin. if youre serious, a setup is not going to be cheap. for fucking around or maybe tear gas use(which is typically dust) anything works that seals and has a good filter.

Just get a modern filter, also the bottom layer of cloth is only 7% asbestos and the rest of the filter will prevent you from breathing it, however I've heard there can be lead dust in outdated filters (poor factory quality) , it's always a good idea to get more modern filters.

Any gasmask will do for riots , just be careful if it is panoramic visor, it offers a wider field of view , but also a wider fragile area, your average filter can handle teargas, so I'd focus more in durability and how flammable it'd be. So far I've been fan of the M95 mask , you should be able to get it for around 50 USD (not adding shipping) M40 is also good.

My head is 63cm for hat sizing, do I just give up on gas masks? Literally, and I do mean literally, the only hat I've ever worn that fits was an Ushanka I found in the back of a surplus store that the owner said had been there for years because it was designed for a giant.
