What barrel length should I get for my first ar? 20 or 16. I want both but what should I get first?
14.5 pinned.
>>31826943
Get an 18" midlength.
>>31826943
I went 16. Partially because I didn't see any kits with 20" barrels, and also because I like the handiness of a 16'' barrel over the longer 20'' (I realize it's only 4'', but still). I wanted a easy to maneuver rifle that could reach out while still being a little bit on the short side.
I don't think 20" barrels are inherently much more accurate than 16" barrels, but 20" is the "correct" length for a military build I guess. 16" gives you the shortest barrel with a non-pinned muzzle device too, which is nice. 14.5" means you have a pinned muzzle device and that cuts down on your options later on.
>>31826984
>cuts down your options later on
Nigger barrels aren't hard to change, and if you have a svelte upper/handguard you can quick change in minutes.
>>31826981
But i kinda want the a1 furniture. But i also want a carbine
>>31827020
Also this
I would just pick it based on what furniture, gas system, and twist rate you want. The actual difference in velocity is very small 16 vs 20 and counterintuitively the 20 can actually be less accurate due to barrel harmonics and shit.
>>31827037
But...
>>31827020
An A1 build really shouldn't be your first AR. Get something easier to find parts for and play around with that first.

I vote 20" for wood furniture ARs. Also straight flutes.

Not sure about that rifle, but Turnbull just made their receivers out of steel to allow case hardening on the TAR-40.
I bought a 16in carbine, am I fucked?

Pinned muzzle device means no changing the gas block without breaking the weld.

>>31830005
Bushnell 2xMP or something like that. It's alright, a little on the fuzzy side though
>>31829953
Nah. That's a common setup. I prefer midlengths on a 16", but it's not a huge deal.
>>31830100
That's what my dad bought. Very similar AR but he got the mid.
>>31827075
Where can I get that furniture?
>>31830020
Why would you ever need to change the gas block
Either you put on an A2, because you know you want an A2 front sight, and leave it, or you go for a low profile block that would work with every other hand guard on the market that you could possibly want
it's not fucking rocket science
>>31830176
Some people change their minds, faggot child.
>>31827368
Why?
>>31830176
This is so funny.
Looking into a first build here. While I appreciate how many options are available, it's honestly hard to pick between all of them.
1:7 or 1:9 and why?
gas piston yes or no and why?
I just want a decently accurate and durable rifle. I'd like to buy a complete upper and finish an 80% lower- what should I be aware of, what should I avoid?
>>31827126
>>31830176
>well, sir. here is my opinion and experience, I didn't go for a 14.5" because pinned muzzle devices decrease your options later...

16 inch or more. 5.56 is better moving a high speeds which the 16 and higher barrels will do. Plus with the 14.5 barrel and 1.5 inch muzzle device, theres only like a .5 inch length difference, but better velocity with the 16
>>31830374
thanks friendo
>>31829946
yfw this would literally last multiple lifetimes
>>31829953
thats the way to go. 16" with either rifle gas or carbine gas. i dont get the poeple who go 14.5. you lose 1.5 inches of velocity and keep the same weight because of your stupid pinned huge flashhider
18" with a rifle length gas system is master race. Ask 3 gunners.
inb4 not enough dwell time, unrelible. Stop running shit, underpowered steel ammo, fag
>>31830506
dwell time is a problem with short barrels not long barrels
>>31830400
Speaking of, where do I get an affordable non-shit A2 upper? I want the fixed carry handle, but no one makes those anymore. Hell, a bunch of companies don't even make 20in uppers anymore.
>>31829946
>fake wood
whose bright idea was that?
>>31830558
Bcm
>>31830558
they are hard to find, i want to know as well. super light
>>31830577
I have only handled one TAR-40, but the fake wood seems to have been a design choice to make the rifle slimmer without risking cracking stockwork. Keep in mind that it is 308 and not 223, but is surprisingly svelte.
They are more showpieces for Turnbull's gunsmithing services than market viable rifles. That said, I would buy the receiver set if they over were to sell them alone.
>>31830325
get a 1:9 as it shoots 55gr optimally.
1:7 or 8 will work, but it's ideal for the most common 55gr.
>>31830505
>midlength gas doesn't exist
>a 1.5 inch FH will weigh just as much as 1.5 inches of barrel, regardless of profile
