The fact is that despite that 5% "growth" the average American lost much more during the raygun presidency than they gained, through a combination of insanely high unemployment, inflation and a huge increase of our now out of control debt

I'm gonna explain in simple terms so that you understand

Picture the entirety of the US population as a bell curve, you have a small part on the right that is very wealthy and a small part on the left that is very poor, with a hump in the middle that represents a much larger middle class

What reagan did was essentially push down on that middle hump and reduce the size of the middle class while simultaneously pulling the entire thing up slightly and that way creating the illusion of things going great

The problem with that approach is that while the poor are slightly better off, strictly speaking, the gap created by the crushing of the middle class gave way to a massive concentration of wealth by the top 1% of the population, forever throwing the US out of balance and effectively condemnig our economy to death before 2030
