>Working with Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, littoral combat ships, and amphibious ships to form adaptive force packages, Zumwalt-class destroyers will use their computing capabilities to make these groups more lethal through increased range, deception, computer integration, and data analysis from various platforms.
What did they mean by this?
>>31817528
Could be that the Zumwalts computers are fast and capable enough to handle additional computing needs of a surface group. Like a plug and play CPU for extra computing power.
The only closest thing to this I can think of is the way SAM systems use track-via-missile guidance: they use the launcher control site to process everything instead of a complete guidance package on a missile. This allows the launch control site to give the missile more computing power.
And the Zumwalt is designed to be controlled by a handful of people... Like the dreadnought in that newish State Trek movie, "Into Darkness".
Intradasting.

That's a great analogy, anon. I didn't think of that.
>>31818307
what the fuck
As an engineer, but not in the know. I could imagine they could handle a lot of encryption/decryption and comms stuff that would otherwise be done locally. Maybe some radar processing? although I'd imagine it would be too slow to send data from ship to ship to do offsite processing. But this is the big leagues, who the hell knows what tech these ships have under their hoods.

Yeah, yeah. You probably saw Ghostbusters too. Amirte?
>>31820714
If they are paying 2+ billion for burkes, they might as well just buy Zumwalts
Though I dnno about the balsa wood structure of the Zumwalt, might be weak against hostile weaponry.
>>31820714
The Zumwalts are just testbeds for the technology that will be used on the next generation of destroyers.

What did they mean by this?
They should turn all these ships into escort carriers to allow operation of F-35B's/UAV's/Seaplanes off them.
Remove the useless guns, move the bridge over 50 feet, and slap a full length flight deck on it.

Electronic Warfare is coming into play, so now we have to deal with symmetrical near-peer forces, asymmetrical COIN, both possibly utilizing CBRN and cyber-warfare induced by a variety of actors. Actors that could knock out the power grid, activate sleeper cells to capitalize on the chaos and invade with conventional forces all within a 24 hour period.

>>31821833
why is it silly
>>31822325
Because we already have 20 carriers without needing to majorly alter the superstructure of another class of ships.
>>31822355
and 10 of those carriers will be filled with choppers, 3 of the other carriers will be sitting in dry dock, another 3 will be elsewhere in the world.
Being able to refuel and rearm on smaller ships could be quite a force multiplier.
>>31822373
>and 10 of those carriers will be filled with choppers
Anon you must know what the F-35B is for, right?
>3 of the other carriers will be sitting in dry dock, another 3 will be elsewhere in the world.
You may as well say the same thing about the Zumwalts, then. They have maintenance availability periods and overseas deployments, too (what's wrong with overseas deployments, anyway?).
>Being able to refuel and rearm on smaller ships could be quite a force multiplier.
On this I agree, but that's different from putting a flight deck on them, which really wouldn't work. In fact, I've previously suggested on /k/ that the Freedom and Independence classes should be upgraded to accept F-35Bs, the idea being that they would work well as near-shore depots.

What is with the post-9/11 military and high-tech buzzwords?
>>31821026
the current problem with the railgun that the zumWAT will field is that the rails that the projectile is being accelerated on, get damaged and are unusable after a dozen or so shots, also not to mention the energy you're going to have to generate to fire 9 rail the enemy in the ass guns
>>31823427
Your information is very out of date, and none of the 3 Zumwalts will have railguns unless they are retrofit in the future.
>>31823528
http://thediplomat.com/2016/03/u-s-may-field-railgun-on-zumwalt-destroyer/
>>31817528
basically they want the zumwalt to do the same shit as the F-35
Do everything while networking with everything else in order to paint a 3D battlefield picture that commanders can work with, which in turn should theoretically improve combat logistics
but that's all what I'm guessing, because as far as Im concerned the best results have always come from good situational awareness, it's why tank cmdrs stick their heads out of tanks
