Blowout panels, which is one of the biggest safety features of an Abrams. All of the ammo is kept in a separate compartment from the crew compartment, and if the ammo is ever cooked off, the ammo rack automatically seals itself off from the crew compartment and the blast is vented out of the top of the tank, minimizing damage to the crew and vehicle itself.

Sure, it LOOKS like the tank is exploding, but that's just the heat from the exploding ammo being vented upwards and away from the vehicle.

For contrast, look up T-72s getting their ammo racks detonated. They don't have blowout panels and the ammo is stored directly inside the tank, so most of the time you'll see the turret literally fly off when the ammo cooks off.

It depends on the angle of the hit. The Abrams' ammo rack is located at the back of the turret, so the only conceivable angles you can hit it from are from the side or rear. On the side, you'd be completely missing the crew compartment. From the rear, there's enough space between the rear of the turret and crew compartment that a HEAT warhead's penetrator loses most if not all of its energy before it reaches the crew compartment.

Also, hitting at an extreme angle like that means the HEAT round effectively has to penetrate MORE armor than a straight on hit, so it might not even penetrate the turret at all.

And again, HEAT rounds lose their energy very quickly after impact (which is why slat and spaced armor works). They'd need to have a direct impact on the crew compartment to have any chance of a penetration.

Modern HEAT shell jets have a bit longer reach on them than you think, especially the large warheads in ATGM's. Slat armor is more useful against the handheld systems.

Well for starters the Iraqi Army doesn't use M1A2 Abrams they Use M1A1M Abrams which is a big difference.

Secondly, assuming it did get a catastrophic kill I wouldn't be surprised considering that most modern Russian made ATGMs can penetrate current gen Western MBTs.
