My mother and I are trying to find a lever action rifle or shotgun to buy as a Christmas gift for my father. I don't know the first thing about these weapons so I'm hoping /k/ has some insight to share.

My father doesn't shoot often and he doesn't currently own any long guns. He stacks 9x19 and .45acp for his pistols, so I was thinking it'd be cool to find a pistol caliber carbine, since that would be easy to handle for someone with limited rifle experience and since he wouldn't have to buy new ammo. Unfortunately it looks like no one makes factory carbines like this.

My second choice would be a 12 gauge shotgun. Several family members have 12 gauges so maybe we could organize some trap shoots and he could have some family fun with it cowboy style.

What does /k/ suggest? We're looking to spend around $800 or less.

or .357 mag

You're not going to find any common levergun in 9mm or .45 because they required rimmed cartridges.

Uberti and Chiappa make good quality Winchester clones, but unfortunately I think they are just out of your price range. You might try a pre-'64 Winchester Model 94 in .30-30, which can usually be had for a reasonable price. Winchester had more recently made the Model 94 in revolver cartridges, but they are somewhat more rare, as are Browning's Winchester clone, the B92.

Henry big boy in .357/38, a good dealer can get you that at around $820
>>
>>31815606
>tube loading
>chambered for anything larger than .22

pick uno
>>
>>31815643
Had no complaints with a Henry .357 after a summer of letting retarded Boy Scouts shoot it. Maintain your shit and it'll go far.
>>
>>31813807
why not build or buy an ar15 based pistol caliber carbine? it is (or was, not sure with panic prices) doable for that budget

OP, I'd recommend a .357

The Henry Big Boy or the Marlin are pretty good. Marlin has a better design, but has had MAJOR QC issues in recent years so either get one made before 2009 or get a really thorough look at the one you do find.

Get this little baby in 12g. Anyone who says anything else is leading you astray.

Marlin 336 in 30-30. Not a pistol caliber but it also has low recoil and it's a pretty fun gun to shoot. You can get a revolver chambered in it too.
>>
>>31813807
I have a Marlin 336CS in .30-30. Its a great gun, but now that I have a .44 mag revolver, I wish my levergun was in .44 as well. I dont use it to hunt, I dont really use it for anything but plinking. I wish I had gone with a cheaper round to shoot, and ammo commonality would be a plus. Most people cant or dont want to handle a .44 mag handgun, so get him a .357 lever gun just incase he gets a .357 revolver someday, unless he has a thing for .44's.

.30-30 is great, but not for my purposes.

>>31815643
>classic durr round is .30-30, similar to 7.62x39

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! Very helpful.

What does that have to do with the lack of a loading gate?

So what are you leaning towards?

I can confirm this. It's my favorite rifle

Reliability has nothing to do with why a poverty tube sucks.
>>
>>31817166
Well it's part of it, but general functionality is the main reason.
>>
>>31817166
>doing what it needs to do is not a factor
>the reason you shouldn't buy it is because I don't like it
Good stuff.

Right now I'm leaning towards a Henry Big Boy carbine... based mostly on aethstetics. I vaugley remember him saying he liked the brass receivers on this style gun years ago but I was thinking they would be way too expensive. The Henry looks like it MSRPs for around $720 which is perfect. The octagonal barrel is neat too. He has an MG sports car and there are octagon shaped items all over his office so that's a detail I think he'd like.

I think I'll do .357 since I think it'd be the lowest recoil and the cheapest for him to plink with. But I'll do some more research and look at all the options.
>>
>>31817540
Just keep in mind that the Henry lacks the loading gate that pretty much every other lever gun has had for the last 150 years. Loading through the tube is a slower and more awkward process.
>>
>>31815679
Because nigger he wants a lever action. Jesus Christ you AR shills are giving me diabetes.

My man!

What do you guys think about the Marlin 336? Looking at one in my lgs, it seemed really nice. But as the above poster said, I've heard a lot of modern lever guns have had some bad QC problems. Does this apply to the Marlin 336? Or even the Marlin 1895? Any one have any experience with recent bought Marlins?
>>
My dad has owned a .30-30 Marlin for as long as I can remember and he loves it. Takes it hunting with him every year.
>>
>>31815414
god yeah, i got one of those and it's the tits.
>>
>>31813807
Henry or Winchester 30-30. If you get the Winchester, get the Short Rifle model.
