Anyone know where I can get a Chinese fiberglass stock. I can't find one in stock anywhere.
>>
>>31813930
Gunbroker is your best bet.
Sarco has original stock sets for 40-60 but they are wooden.

Anyone ever cut off the stock and put a pistol grip and folding stock?

Just got mine on the weekend. 1952 Russian. ~$250. Very happy with it. Eager to take it shooting.
>>
>>31816145
save for some stock marring, that thing looks great. Any serious cosmetic defects or functional weirdos?
>>
>>31816169
Yeah the stock is definitely the worst part, but I like the look of the wear. Adds character.

There's some rusting here and there. Just little specks but I'll be giving this thing a double duty cleaning job soon (so far just cleared the cosmoline). Any suggestions on de-rusting?

No functional weirdos but I am looking at picking up a couple spare springs for the trigger mechanism just in case, but everything moves real well.

I've been around guns my whole life, always admired the American tradition (I'm in Canada) but this is the first firearm I've owned personally. I'm really excited.

Tula of course, the vast majority of SKSs came from Tula. And I know yours is Tula as well because Izhevsk didn't make any in 1952.

Where are the 1952 ones from? Is there somewhere I can find out more about my SKS from it's markings?

Yours is a Tula I'm assuming, it should have a star on the top cover, that is what indicates that it's from Tula. As for all of the many other markings, I don't know what they mean.

Yeah it does. Star with an arrow on it, 1952r. Thanks!

Owner of the SKS-M here, It did not have a stock when I bought it. I thought I'd have a bit of fun with it. Takes AK mags so why not slap a Wolverines on it?

I have a Tula 53 with a triple digit serial number.
I was wondering if this is normal for othere sks ownerrs. I know there are millions worldwide. why would mine have a triple digit serial? It can't possibly be the three hundredth one made, can it?
>>
>>31824321
No, it will have a letter code infront of it. For every new run they would stamp the next successive letter in the cyrillic alphabet then the number of rifle it was in that batch.
>>
>>31824344
Thank you! Funny enough my letter code is AK. I couldnt find any good info on this. So If there is two letters, that means she is a second run. May your rounds find thier mark komrade.
>>
>>31824403
Mine is LV on my 1950 Tula. The first letter is the run and the second letter is the batch then the numbers.

Thank you, may you strip well and often.

>>
>>31824503
It has the best designed stripper clips I've ever used. Totally blows mosin clips and other milsurp rifle clips out of the water. Very low recoil impulse, and very reliable. If it had came out in the same time period as the Garand it would have been the most effective rifle in the world at the time. Obviously it's dated now.

How does it compare to the AR15 for a general purpose rifle? I can get either one. What would the SKS or AR15 leave to be desired?
>>
>>31824642
the SKS has shitty sights, lower capacity, and is simply not modular. shit's 1950s technology bruh

but 7.62x39 is bretty gud and it's got a giant bayonet
>>
>>31824642
AR is generally lighter, more modular, detachable magazines (unless you buy an SKS D or SKS M which take AK magazines you won't have good success using after market detachable magazines in an SKS) and usually has better sights. But it's not as reliable as the SKS.

The question though for you is do you want to go military surplus or new?

>The question though for you is do you want to go military surplus or new?

That's a question I'm trying to answer myself. The downside of military surplus (as I understand it, at least) is that you can have trouble finding ammunition for it. To my knowledge there is no shortage now or impending for 7.62x39. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Are there any other downsides to milsurp?
>>
>>31824792
Not yet.
>>
>>31824819
7.62x39mm ammo tends to be one that is readily available during ammo panics.

I can't think of anything really, as long as you clean your gun it'll last longer than you.
>>
>>31824692
A good AR is very reliable. SKSs are very reliable as well, when they're clean anyways. SKSs don't go under the scrutiny of guns like ARs or AKs because there isn't somebody doing a new torture test on them every week. I'm not sure how it would fare with the open top and tilting bolt design.

Unfortunately the SKS was already kind of old tech even when it was at the peak of its production. It was being produced alongside the AK and history obviously tells us which one took hold. Now in 2016 it's a very neat rifle but falls short of the modern niceties of a gun like an AR. Easy to mount an optic on an AR, more ergonomic, detachable mags, much lighter weight, etc. The SKS is still quite practical if you want to use it for hunting, and 7.62 is definitely more capable than 5.56 for game, but an AR is more practical in today's world all around.
>>
What makes the AK a better system than the SKS? Is it just the select fire that made them the choice of militaries over the SKS? Is either suited to anything better than the other? Is the maximum effective range of 7.62x39 really only about 250 meters? All of these are actual questions. There isn't much information available about the SKS compared to the AR.
>>
How do I determine the date of my SKS? I've checked on google and all that, can't make sense of it.
>>
What is a reasonable price for a sks currently? I want to buy one because of shity gun laws in my state.
>>
>>31825136
This gun is seriously not worth more than $300. Seriously.

>>31824819

>>
>>31825215

I dunno I got this in about 2012 online from a gun store in georgia. It was so beat up he called to make sure I wanted it. It was probably $260 shipped.

Last place I've seen them was J&G sales and classic firearms but they were approaching $400, which is too much imo.
>>
>>31825882
So let me get this straight then...

An SKS is not worth a half of an AR-15 or AK47?
>>
>>31825966
For beat to shit surplus with half rotting stocks, yes.

Russian SKS's are like $200 mint in Canada. Our prices are dicked up by import laws.
