Cardboard.

Really, for pretty close range handguns, staple some cardboard to wooden posts.

Plenty of cardboard around if you flatten some amazon boxes.

You will need a staple gun, not a paper stapler. For close range handgun practice you can really see where you're hitting and tighten up your groups because you get good feedback on where your shots are landing.
