Is artillery, especially towed, obsolete?
>>
>>31800967
No. Not by a long shot.
You could have Googled this.
>>
It is cheaper than a plane full of bombs.
>>
>>31801055
What about SPGs
>>
>>31800967
Nah, being able to bombard an established target from long range will always be useful.

Everything that isn't mobile or heavily defended by air defenses will be wrecked by air power, TBM, PGM, or cruise missiles. World war 3 will be hell for ground forces
>>
>>31800967
Yes. Glider-delivered munitions are the future. A single glider can deliver as much firepower as hundreds of artillery pieces, and is reusable.

no

of course not

This, what's the point of towing out artillery near the front lines when you can just drone shit? Sure it's cheaper, but it isn't self propelled, and drones can drop a missile or two and fly away no problem. Artillery seems kind of ridiculous at this point.

Of course, highly mobile mortars are a different story.
>>
>>31801132
Lose 200 lbs and become artillery occiffer
Standards aren't that high
>>
>>31801172
Because you fucking idiot, there are plenty of times when you need a lot more than "a missile or two" you need constant fire support over hours or days.
>>
>>31800967
Absolutely not.
>>
>>31800967
I think towed artillery which cant move fast after firing, is obsolete. The war in Donbass has underlined how counter-battery fire can be used to an extremely deadly result.
>>
>>31801290
Artillery duels are interesting. Can you point to any links or sources?
I know the US sent a couple counterbattery radars to the Ukes, a couple ended up in Russian hands
>>

No.... if any thing it needs improvements. Fuck lifting heavy shells, all this team work stuff. Make it all automated and make it so I can sit at some place with AC, all the while typing and hitting enter to make it work.

We have the two most powerful air forces in the world, and our army has the most powerful army-based air force in the world. We can keep birds in the sky in almost any remote bumfuck area of the world 24/7, 365 without fail. Why the fuck do you think we couldn't keep birds in the sky for a few hours, swapping out planes for loaded ones every now and then? It isn't even difficult, we have done this during desert storm and vietnam, as well as done similar exercised during ww2.
>>
>>31801405

yeah cept an arty shell more than likely costs a fraction of what a guided missile does. and don't act like we can just throw that kind or ordinance around constantly during an actual war.

A paladin is one of the standard playable character classes in most editions of the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game. The paladin is a holy knight, crusading in the name of good and order, and is a divine spellcaster.

Do they deploy anything America gives them with the groups receiving the most casualties?

they US just handed over the radar sets in cases and fucked back home. having no idea how to set up the radars, or use them properly, the ukies naturally squandered the systems and ended up losing the sets.

Artillery has a purpose in high intensity conflict against infantry, if that conflict isn't highly mobile. In COIN and similar operations it's more or less pointless. Artillery is very inaccurate - in order to destroy a SINGLE tank (something that would require a direct hit) it is typically estimated that 50 shells would need to be fired to ensure this. When each gun is only capable of firing 2-5 rounds per minute, this is basically an impossible task. In COIN operations artillery guns are scattered few and far between. If you're lucky to get priority, you can expect maybe 3-6 rounds if your commander is really generous. Sure, if their fires are accurate they could take out a team or two, but there's a decent shot they'll miss and it'll be a shit show of getting them on target while the enemy is scurrying away in some spider hole.

Just replace the damn things with drones already. Mortars do a good enough job and those are a lot more mobile.

Slavs, same as noise and light discipline are non existent with them without extensive training the concept of not putting rare or expensive equipment where the enemy can easily capture it is seriously lacking.

Or the Ukrainian soldiers got bored and traded it to the separatists for vodka.

The issue with that line of though is that fourth-generation warfare is typically a reaction against a major firepower gap in a match up. In Syrian, Iraq, the later Armenian–Azerbaijani, and to a lesser extent the Ukrainian conflict have all devolved into varying degrees of trench warfare. It appears to be what happens when there is not high levels of supporting fire.

Wasn't it done quite often in WW2? Not just by direct fire but by spotter plane?

The only part of the line not to give ground during the Bulge, while opposing one of the best German units, did so because of artillery. I know there are accounts of Germans who believed the US had automatic artillery guns or, in Italy, complaining about the American spotter planes slowly circling above as tanks were knocked out one by one.

>Wasn't it done quite often in WW2? Not just by direct fire but by spotter plane?

Sort of yes. Artillery was far shorter range and therefore had to be placed close to the frontline. This makes taking out tanks much easier. Another thing is that back then tanks had much less armor and you might not need a direct hit to disable a tank.

You dont need a direct hit today either to take out MBT

Close hits easily mobility kill tanks and even firepower kill.
>>
>>31801132
Not that hard. I've been accepted. You can do it too. Mostly math and common sense. I mean other than possible tinnitus or /k/'s theorectical attack chopper death (which is surprisingly possible in the near future)
>>
>>31801405
Cost per shell. Airforce is wicked, but expensive. Plus airforce sometimes sets off the radar. And can be loud. And cost of fuel. And pilot training. Artillery has expenses and downsides (god forbid lack of maneuverability, air attacks, loud as shit) but it's simply more economical at this point in time
