no middys?

Literally too much info and the market is too dynamic for this to be worth it for more than a short period of time.

I forgot...

barrel (construction method): reaming(drilling), Cold Hammer Forging

I should also include whether or not certain aspects is a "cost driver" (i.e.: price of a BCG is more dependant on the finish rather than the profile...Unless dealing with exotics; titanium carrier, lightened, etc).
>>
>>31794214

Thanks. Have a section growing for that.

Essential tools needed to build.

>>31794196
Examples?
>>
>>31794182

I'm also a long time resident of /g/ (technology).

Baring one-off companies making very specialty items (exotics)...the "speed" of AR/firearms industry development is nothing compared to how fast computers change on a yearly basis.

Trends are measured on a timescale of ~5 years by comparison.

Ah, yes.

Well..there may not be a mid per se...but exotics do exist.

Also...forgot to include...

buffer tube (options): anodized colors, 7 position, steel/weighted, etc.

Also don't forget about Vltor A5, all the benefits of the rifle length buffer tube with the functionality of the carbine stock.

Or the Magpul UBR.
>>
What is the improper use of a stainless barrel that wears it down?
>>
direct impingment get in here
>>
>>31797928

High heat/rapid fire.

Metal loses strength when hot and wears faster.
>>
Can you run down some of the more popular builds I see on /arg/? I really like Giddy's gats besides for the paint
>>
>>31794089
Avoid Anderson barrels, they're shit.
Get Ballistic Advantage instead.
>>
>>31798250
Do not fall for this meme. Anderson uppers are fine.
>>
>>31797633
>>31797697

Good to note.
I haven't deep dived into all the offering available for every category yet. Still in the info collection stage.

Both the vltor a5 and magpul UBR appear to be rifle length buffers with adjustable stocks.

Based on their proprietary nature, I kind of want to classify them under exotics.
>>
>>31798381
>UBR appear to be rifle length buffers with adjustable stocks.

Have a UBR on my ar-10, it's a carbine length buffer tube. The magpul PRS however is a rifle length tube.
>>
>>31798401

https://www.magpul.com/products/firearms-accessories/buttstocks/ubr-2-0-collapsible-stock

"Carbine as well as A5-length buffer systems."

Nice. Was just doing a quick glance over while I sit on shitter at work.
Spec sheets don't say the length of the buffer tube, but based on the description that it can use Carbine length buffer and spring, certainly seems the case.
>>
>>31798465

Additional bit of info, for AR-10s when using czrbine length buffer tubes you can't just slap a standard ar-15 carbine length buffer in there and call it a day because the bcg is longer on the ar-10. You either have to cut down a buffer by a half inch or so (I don't have the exact measurements on hand and I don't feel like pulling apart my 10 and 15 to compare the two) or purchase an AR-10 carbine buffer separate.
>>
>>31798250

Will be avoiding topics related to specific brands for this one, unless they make an Exotic (Troy PDW stock, cryptic coating BCG, Proof Research/Christensen Arms carbon fiber barrels, etc )

May make a part 2 detailing brand specific differences (i.e.: Colt trigger pin difference).

The objective of this initial one will be to outline the current state of AR tech and aasembly.
>>
>>31798576
might want to also make note of the difference between Armalite trigger kits and everyone else as well, IIRC the bolt catch is taller on the armalite packs and can actually interfere with the function of the rifle if used in a non armalite spec rifle.
>>
>>31794089
Forgot Stainless is heavy bruh.
>>
>>31798199
BCM/Troy/Midwest free float
Standard forged upper
Guuci brand lower

>>
>>31794089
chrome is far easier to clean and does best with steel cased ammunition thanks to chrome being extremely "slick". it has great heat deflection/absorption abilities too, keeping a barrel cooler for longer.

stainless gets you the most accuracy with the shortest barrel life as you mentioned. stainless often has a coating on it since not everyone wants a barrel with a stainless finish - black oxide or some epoxy like birdsong or something is popular.

meloite/tennifer/hostile environment/nitro gas carburizing are pretty much slightly variations on the same process. what makes the difference is the presence or absence of ammonia which is what gives a very shiny and slick appearance. it's banned in the US for EPA regulations, so melonite is used.

also in there should be WASP - a process used by CMMG, bushmaster, and some others which is a variation on melonite that simulates the slickness of chrome-lining without the additional costs.

there's also, in theory, stellite sleeving, which is used in M60 GPMG's and similar, and does exist in some belt-fed AR uppers like the Shrike, but honestly if you want to blow $4k on the barrel alone, you probably don't care much about money.

other info you have that is a little off:
1. you can have folding stocks as well, but very uncommon
2. milspec is a manufacturing process where the tube is forged and milled with the threading larger than the OD. commercial used to be made that way but quickly switched to an extrusion process and the threading cut in place. the material can vary although milspec (part of the TDP technically) does specify it. it also specifies only 4 positions of adjustment.

2. recoil buffers are carbine, H, H1, H2, H3, rifle, piston, abbreviated, telescoping, and powdered.

3. i'm not going to run down and nit pick everything. you're just missing some details. like you don't mention fully chromed BCG's which predate chrome lined ones, or the different types of anodizing, et c.
>>
>>31794089
>Lower Receiver
80% or nothing
>>
>>31798741
H1 is H, there is also Extra Heavy buffer(A.K.A. 9mm)
>>
>>31798178
So how do I mitigate this?
>>
>>31794182
if you didnt have a bird brain youd retain info

>>
>>31799430

The uppers may be fine, but the barrels are shit.
>>
>>31799679
So intermittent "rapid" semi auto fire at the range is OK?
>>
>>31794089

Thanks OP I am going to build an ar soon I'll save your thoughts.
>>
>>31794089
OP for stocks you should also think about Slide Fire. Are you just taking random bits of common knowledge and making and infograph or are you actually testing shit out?

416R Stainless steel has a Rockwell C hardness of ~24-36 (average ~30)

http://nextgenerationmetals.com/products-page/stainless/416r-gun-barrel-steel/

4150 (chrome moly vanadium) has a Rockwell C hardness of ~42-47 (avg ~45)
http://www.matweb.com/search/datasheettext.aspx?bassnum=m415al

Melonite (nitride bath case hardening) produces a Rockwell C hardness of ~64

So yeah...

>What the actual fuck am I reading?

Stay a while..you might learn something
>>
>>31804135
That 45rC is after it's heat treated you idiot. Stainless is horrid to machine because it work hardens like a mother fucker to 50+ Rockwell C if you're not incredibly careful and requires weird feeds and speeds compared to most other steels. You think literally any carbide tool gives two shits about something that's only 47 Rockwell C?
>>
>>31804135
>hardness is the only factor in how hard a material is to machine

Oh God what the fuck, you can't be se-

>Melonite (nitride bath case hardening) produces a Rockwell C hardness of ~64

-motherfucker do you even realize you machine the parts BEFORE nitriding them? Are you braindead?
Protip: stainless is absolute shit to work with compared to 4140-50. Just kill yourself.

>>31794198
>Don't forget tools

Tools are already present in the thread: >>31794182
>>
>>31804218
>>31804236
Serious question here. Why are stainless barrels so cheap then?
>>
>>31804254
Longer tool life, probably.
>>
>>31804254
Not having to coat the barrel cuts out a shit ton of cost. The machine time for a 4140 and a SS barrel is roughly the same but the 4140 has to be sent for heat treating, then coating which if not done in house adds like a dozen costs for shipping, hazardous material disposal for the coatings, upcharge for services, etc, etc.
