Not as much as you'd think, surprisingly. Modern day flares do not actually flame until they have been propelled ~75 feet. To simplify things, think of them as "two stage rockets" (sort of). Really closer to artillery shells at a fireworks display come to think of it. The first thing that happens when you pull the trigger is that the initial charge will go off. This will send your flare flying fast as shit. With very old flares (pre 1980s or thereabouts) the flare would just shoot and burn in 1 step when you pulled the trigger. In new flares the second burning stage has 1 or even 2 (depends on brand) safety measures to pass before before being activated. The first and more common is the impact device inside the flare. If it hits something hard or comes to a quick stop after launch, the second stage of the flare will become detached and not do shit. This was probably designed because dumbasses were shooting flares into the woods and setting shit on fire. The chances are slim that you could negligently fire your flare gun horizontally into a forest at random and not hit something to activate this this safety. This also means dumbasses can shoot each other with flares inside their house and not be incinerated (only bruised). If you're feeling ballsy and want to see it in action, throw a towel over a door and shoot a flare at it (at least wear goggles and have a fire extinguisher ready though, just in case). The second safety that is not seen much anymore uses airflow to help ignite the second stage. So again, if your flare were to stop midflight, it would not actually flare. What you see in Hollywood, as usual, is bullshit. Flares are terrible, terrible weapons. You might be better off just throwing the gun. Hope you learned something.

I've always felt that flair guns in combination with those raid fogging bug bombs would make an excellent area denial combination. Think blocking off a stairwell. Fogger (uses, or used to use propane as propellant) contains some foul stuff, should keep people out.. if it doesn't, flair gun into now propane filled hallway should. (Note: this will probably burn down whatever structure your in.. so its not exactly ideal.)
