Is a Russian Capture K98k a good place to start for an aspiring Mauser owner? I mean I'm aware that parts were literally thrown into bins and then randomly put back together, but does it make for a sloppier or otherwise inferior rifle, non-matching parts aside?

>Is a Russian Capture K98k a good place to start for an aspiring Mauser owner?
Sure.

>randomly put back together,
That's being a bit harsh; the Russians re-built them just like they did with their Mosins. These parts were fitted to the point they were safe and functional and then put in storage for future emergencies. It will not operate as smoothly as when originally-constructed, but it will work.

I come here primarily for this thread.

I work for an auction house, and we just got a gorgeous Swedish M1896 that we can't sell (no FFL). Matching numbers, original finish, 1916 date, sharp bore, the works. What's a reasonable price to offer my boss for it?
>>
>>31791823
$350-400 if it's in excellent condition.
>>
>>31791823
I would try to sell it for $600, I would try to buy it for $400. I personally haven't seen an M96 listed for under $400 in the past year if all parts matched.

$500 is even a decent price if it's in great condition.

Mausers are my favorite. Especially them k98ks.

I'm looking for a 1938 or 1937 BSW k98. Non RC, of course.

I have a 243 39, 147 40, duv 41, bcd 42, dou 43, and a byf 44.

With that in mind, would you recommend one of the Yugoslavian options over a RC Mauser?

And what would be a fair price for a RC be? I saw one at a gunshow for $250, I only assumed it was an RC because the barrel and receiver codes did not match, and because of the price.

>With that in mind, would you recommend one of the Yugoslavian options over a RC Mauser?
Depends on the Yugo (assuming we are talking all post-WW2 Commie period). The Yugo rebuilds of Kar.98k/M24/Vz.24 rifles were usually fitted with new barrels during their rebuild, and the M48 rifles were made with entirely new parts. From that standpoint, that makes them more likely to be good shooters, but then they don't retain most of their more interesting pre-war markings. $250 would be a great price for an RC Kar.98k these days; also barrel codes are often subcontractors anyway so they don't match the receiver manufacturer.

Not him, but if you care, try and find a RC that doesn't have all the waffenampts peened to hell. It probably doesn't reflect any significant change in value, but it's a plus. Of course, check the bore and rifling. If it comes with a cleaning rod, sling, sight hood, or locking screws by the magazine (I forgot what they're called), those are all also pluses because that's less shit you have to buy to make it look "original".

Here's the before/after of the first gun I ever bought, a RC K98k that I finally got around to refinishing the stock.

There was a Spanish 7mm Mauser for $270 at a gun show last week. I didn't grab it because no cash on me, but I got the guy's number. It wasn't a K98, it resembled more of a Gewehr from WW1 (Long af, straight bolt). Should I give him a call and get it?

Something like pic related, or was it actually an M1891? Spain bought a few thousand Argie 1891s in 1893 as an emergency purchase to outfit troops going to fight in one of their African colonies; by the time the rifles were delivered the war was over and so lots of them wound up in Cuba, where they were captured by the USA. An actual Spanish-purchase M1891 is very rare.
>$270
I paid $250 for this one, which is a 1923 Oviedo-made M1893 that was refurbed after their civil war. If the number match (and especially if it's not a post-war refurb)

Where did it rust? Soak that area in CLP for a few days. I mean plunge whatever it is in the stuff. Then scrub the fuck out of it, wipe and oil all of your metal.

Also, you know those silica bags that come in all sorts of items? Throw them in your closet/safe/cases.

I've never had any of my guns rust.

It's a Greek (same thing, right?) contract FN1930. From what I understand, the Czechs got their hands on a few of these after WWII and repaired/salvaged what they could of the stocks, scrapped the shitty ones, and dropped them into Vz.24 stocks (which is what mine has) before sending them off to the Romanian military. It's a pretty interesting rifle.

Hail Satan! Which Turk model is it? All the ones converted to 8x57mm should be able to use the standard M98-pattern clip. I had some Romy ammo and the clips were dogshit; too gummed up with rust and/or paint to properly feed the rounds.

Not home right now otherwise I'd be sharing pics. I'm not very educated on historical rifles and the like so Mauser knowledge is quite limited. I have what I'm sure it's a Mauser, same cartridge, bolt and the like. But one thing that caught my eye is the front sight on a lot of these Mausers had a short of ring while the front sight on mind is just a tiny tapered post. Is this "correct" for a Mauser? Is it some sort variation? If the threads still here when I get home. I'll return with pictures.

Still covered in Waffenamt stamps. Also still has the original serial number. Norwegian military Mauser convertions.
The "K98kF1" rifles had a new barrel, changing calibre from 7,92x57 to 7,62x63, U-notch rear sight, square front sight post, relief in front receiver bridge to accomodate 7,62x63 on clips, and the old serial was milled off and replaced with a new Norwegian serial number prefixed with its branch of service (HÆR, K.ART., FLY, NSB, or KNM(army, coastal artillery, airforce, Norwegian state railroads, or Royal Norwegian Navy)).

The M.67 rifles were made in 6,5x55, 7,62x51 (true NATO spec chamber), and .22LR.

Might add that the heavy barrels were made at Kongsberg, and the convertion in whole was done in-house by them.

The rifles were then sold to rifle shooting associations over Norway. The older M.59 rifles, in 7,62x63 and 6,5x55, were used by the Norwegian military as sniper rifles. The M.67 was supposed to be its replacement but the Våpensmia NM149 (small ring mauser with dark green laminate stock, semi-weight barrel, and fixed 6x42 S&B scope) took over instead.

The M.59 and M.67 are mostly replaced in competition use today by the Sauer 200 STR rifles, mostly in 6,5x55.

The M.59 and M.67 were offered by three different dioptre sights, I believe. I have the latest generation, "Busk".

the top is the after m8...

>year 2516
>all k98k left are 100% german originals
>few RC k98s exist due to being shot to hell, bubba'd, or lost in watersports accidents sometime in the early to mid 21st century
>collectors now cannibalize several common marked k98s to turn into one rare, reproduction RC k98
>the procedure is outlined below:
>first, collector dismantles all the rifles, and throws all of the parts in a bin
>then, the user proceeds to get shitfaced wasted on potato liquor until he can no longer tell his hands from his ass
>user then proceeds to create one k98, also known as "the бля винтoвкa"
>while maintaining a constant level of drunkeness, the user is threatened with deportation and forced labor as he attempts to electropencil in a random number on the rifle
>This next step must be done with painstaking care as the user must now get so drunk that he accidentally drops the entire rifle in a super heated vat of shellac and cosmoline. However, should the user get too drunk and past out, the entire process must be started over again completely.
>Finally, after accumulating enough shellac and cosmoline to double the rifle's weight, the collector must throw the rifle down a flight of stairs
>this final step is to simulate the aged and precision finishing process employed by the Russian armorers

Go ahead and completely strip your Mauser. Every single piece.

I sprayed every metal piece every day on mine with Rem Oil and CLP for a week straight. I also removed the shitty flatly RC shellac job. If I hadn't, my wood would have warped because it's bare wood.

I then wiped the stock down four times over four weeks with boiled linseed oil.

Cleaned all the metal with a toothbrush too. I got a 3 mm thick layer of rust out from inside of the butt plate.

After cleaning I wiped them all dry and then wiped every piece with a oiled rag.

After reassembling, my wife thought I bought a new rifle because it looked completely different. Do it, m8.

How did you take off sergei's red shellac? One thing that's stopping me from redoing the wood on my RC is the threat of the wood itself being stained red from the shellac or whatever it is, and the fact that I don't feel like sanding a large amount of wood just to get rid of the shellac
>>
>>31802436
Acetone and a rag. You can sub the rag for fine or ultra fine (0000) steel wool if yours is particularly hard to get off; mine wasn't. The shellac and even the cheap black paint on the takedown disk all came off pretty easy after an hour or two of pouring acetone on the rag and rubbing. The wood is unlikely to be stained underneath so you shouldn't need to sand. That being said, I did sand mine with a sanding block to prevent rounding my corners, solely because I needed some sawdust to fill a few small holes in the stock from what looks like grenade shrapnel.
>splattered pattern only on one side of the rifle
>small bits of metal stuck in the stock

I left most of it as it was, but filled in a few really bad ones. If it's one thing for sure, no one ever said R/Cs don't have character.

After a good acetone scrubbing, I took mine to the sink with some hot water, Dawn soap, and a nylon brush and gave it a good scrubbing to remove any remnants of cosmoline. I'd done this originally when I got the rifle, but I figured I'd do it again to be sure. Set it out to dry, did a few coats of BLO, and then Minwax finishing wax.

I apologize of course for my silly question, but what would you do to ensure that the wood doesn't rot or something after putting it under the sink? Wouldn't you risk warping the stock as it's wet? I'm asking these silly questions because I want to be absolutely sure about these details before attempting it myself. Did you reblue the takedown disk? Did you refinish the metal of the gun? As the original german k98s have a shiny smooth blue whereas the RC has a redone, matte sort of finish.

It's really just experience and doing a lot of research of what others have said to do.

I'm not an expert, but I'm under the impression wood usually warps when it soaks up an exorbitant amount of water and is then exposed to high heat for drying. That being said, I've done this numerous times to remove cosmoline and clean stocks before finishing on everything from a Marlin Model 60, to M1 Garand.

You can use a big utility sink or even a bathtub when doing this. Depending on how dirty a rifle is, depends on which one I'll wash it in. But it's pretty simple. I take a nylon brush, something like a large toothbrush, and mix some Dawn and hot water into a tupperware container. I'll pour some of that mixture onto the rifle stock and scrub it with the nylon brush. I'll do this everywhere until I'm satisfied, and then use my hand to cup hot water over the stock to clean the soap off. You can run the stock under the hot water, but I cup it with my hands to hasten the drying time. Either way, your stock won't warp. When you dry, get a towel and just rub down the stock and then leave it somewhere. Or, if you opt to, you can use your iron or heat gun at this point and steam out your dents, up to you. In my experience it helps a little, but not a lot, and it doesn't hurt to try. But as for where to leave it, a garage will work, in front of a window in your house, whatever. Like I said though, I try and avoid really high heats like throwing it in a black trashbag in the sun. I'll usually wait a day or two to let it dry before continuing on. Remember, we're not soaking it in water for hours on end, we're merely washing it.
>>
>>31805266
Also, the takedown disc is originally a stainless finish, so I just left that as it is after scraping the cheap Russian black paint off. As for the finish on the metal, I don't do anything to it besides cosmoline removal and lightly oil. I'm under the impression that the Russians never did anything to the metal, and that the matte finish is patina and age. The shiny finishes you see on a lot of K98ks are doctored (i.e. Mitchell's Mausers fraud). If I'm wrong, no big deal. It looks fine how it is, and I'm not trying to dress it up to something that it's not. We're merely trying to make it NOT look like its made of bakelite and shit.

Yep, sporterized Kar.98k made at the former CZ plant in Povaska Bystrica, Slovakia. The metal looks unmolested, so you could put it back in military trim with a replacement stock, handguard, and barrel bands.

Huh. And how would I go about doing so? Would it be worth it? Or is it a preference thing at that point. It's a fine and rifle as is right now. There's also this plastic butt plate on here. If anything I'd change that to something more fitting (if possible) any idea where i should start or look?

I'm confused I bought a colombian mauser last week and the guy selling it said it was chambered in 7.62 NATO but the Internet says that they were only made in 30-06 also it has a proof mark for 7.62 NATO and it has .30 on the receiver also a 30-06 barley fits in the chamber of the gun

>a 30-06 barley fits in the chamber of the gun
If you can close the bolt on a .30-'06 cartridge then that's probably what it's chambered in. Take it to a gunsmith if you're really unsure. BTW, .30-'06 is sometimes referred to a 7.62x63mm.

I fired a 7.62 NATO out of it and it worked fine but the bolt wouldn't close on the 30-06 but I just got some snap caps and the bolt does not close on those either

>I fired a 7.62 NATO out of it and it worked fine
If it was a .30-'06 chamber the NATO case would've blown its shoulder way forward. If it didn't then it's not a .30-'06 chamber.
>the bolt wouldn't close on the 30-06
Then it's not .30-'06. Take it to a gunsmith just to be safe.

alright I'll shoot a round sometime in the next few days and see if the case is fucked up

Different anon. It's up to you, but I'd at least go research what you'd need for a new stock. It's a fine looking rifle regardless.

How are the Argentine 1891s? Can you use modern ammo in them?

Interesting. Was this done by the Russians?

Yes.

More likely done by the Germans. The Russians tended to use electro-pencil to serial small parts, and they usually didn't bother with the firing pin.

IMO Swedish mausers are one of the most refined ones in the existence. They are absolutely gorgeous well made robust machines.
>inb4 3rd lug
Just google it
German mausers of course are widely consider to be the end all be all of Mauser refinement BUT, you won't make a mistake if you acquire mint yugo m48 mauser. For almost all practical purposes they are a copy of k98 just a tad different in dimensions. M48 is my favorite Mauser right after the m96
