They do, but them seeing us and what we had didn't really matter. Their rockets were pretty inaccurate, and whenever they sent ground troops up to us the usually took their s-vests off, or ran away. The 15 - 25 guys that did go through with it, got fucking smoked by pretty much everything lol. I did hear some shit about them making drone IED's now, and thats pretty scary, but we never encountered an ISIS drone out there. We heard shit about them using them, and the ISF shot at our drone thinking it was ISIS.

It's the range of a standard HE/HE-FRAG shell. A BB shell would push the figure to about 36km.

Besides the 52-cal version is going to be introduced in near future. A 52-cal M777 could shoot standard munition up to 30+ km

Somehow I think we need more towed 155mm howitzer though since there's only like 28 of these and the older FH-70 is being phased out

While getting the 777 would be ideal, I think korean KH-179 would be suffice to complement the G5.

It's cheap too (about 1 million dollar each). Our neighbour bought dozens of KH-179

We have tents, but its seriously so much of a pain in the ass to use. We usually set up some tarps into some makeshift tent, with a sleeping bag on the ground. People sleep ontop of the truck, under the mortar, in the trucks. When you only get a couple hours of sleep it doesn't really matter. Usually up at night shooting anyway, and sleeping on the gun during the day with the bullshit air shoots.

>>
>>31788522
Yeah so the sight reason, was because the first 5 shots were fucking up the sights. So after the baseplate digs in a couple shots you keep the sight mounted. And automatic fire is authorized by battalion commander only, unless he is absent, then its battery commander. But that is why we can't fire on automatic regularly.
>>31788525
Oh yes, its at least 85 F with 100% humidity every night here. You can do it all year long not really comfortably though. No part of the field is really "comfortable"

>>31788530
Damn, that's pretty shitty. Its cool but lots of prep and bullshit. 81's are sweet just the right size IMO, 120's seem too big for what they want us to use them for, but bigger boom is what they really want I suppose.

>>31788548
Sounds about right!
>>
>>31788562
>So there's no actual, existing solution for it?
I know there are plenty of solutions to deal with extreme cold like this, but I've never trained for this.
Good sleeping bag+ tent and a mat to isolate yourself from the ground seem like the bare minimum to conserve heat though.
>>
>>31788582
How airtight are they? Our tents in the FDF are pretty much completely open so you start needing a small flame when it goes to negative thirties. The army sleeping bags are only rated for -25, IIRC.

Here in Finland where I live, you can't really sleep on the ground ever. It gets too cold at night and you'll just wake up shivering.
>>
>>31788602

>>31788596
That wasn't the story I have heard. We heard there was a french artilleryman who didnt jump off the stool in time. (watching the round go down the tube) and shot through his face. But I actually had no idea that happened.
>>
>>31788590
We got new bags a few years ago that are really good. The old ones sucked dong. Problem was that i was part of a recon/strike element that mainly moved by foot/skis so all the stuff we wanted with us had to into the backpack. That included the tent and sleeping bags.

This meant that a lot of people used the old lighter bag unless it was super cold.

>>

>>

That's actually the purpose of the red cockring here >>31788112 , it stays on the muzzle so you know immediately it's loaded.
>>31788464
>Seems legit, where do I get?
You may be out of luck in the US, all I can find is a recall because it doesn't comply with some safety requirement or something.
Shit has changed my life on the field for the better though, usually I'd just hang a tarp and hope for the best.
>>
>>31788633

>>

That's not what happened though. The round misfired and he stupidly looked inside the tube. It went off right at that moment.

Nah, you have to put them manually.

I don't know, for me, removing the sight each time seem like the perfect occasion to fuck up the values you set on it accidentally.
We use a different goniometer though.
>>
>>31788659
there are at least 2 guys standing by the mortar so there shouldn't be any guess work as to whether or not a bomb is in the tube... marines are just stupid as fuck

i imagine the sight being removed is for that reason because the sights are manufactured to stand up to the concussion of these weapons. they're like babies.

Really? Assuming you're required?
We have nothing like that. It's actually really easy to lose track of rounds fired / in the tube, but usually with mortars we know. Our firing isn't super fast, because of our FDC.

Also with removing the sights, yeah we could fuck up the reading. But its only the first 5 shots, Some stupid rule we have. We have a shock absorbing sight mount...

Yes.

And that's why you should always call the applicants former boss and do an independent physical test. However, the difficulty of amf and how "hard" it is is generally overrated in my regard. The only thing different is the weight of your bag and that isn't difficult, only painful, to train.
>>
>>31788784
The weight of the bag is probably not an issue, we did regular patrols with LK100s stuffed to the max. It was more a case of that you needed to have worked for atleast a year to apply, preferably more. He had only done something like 8 months.

Ah, well that changes everything. I understand the idea of requiring the applicants to work for a full year before applying to some of these "non-standard" positions so that they are fully trained and well experienced infantrymen, excluding the need to train someone in that as well, but I've met too many idiots that have worked for several years and some very good soldiers that have only worked half a year. If he's a good soldier it shouldn't have been a problem. Mortarmen arn't always seen as the most intelligent people after all, moving a grenade 1 meter from a case to a pair of hands isn't a difficult job. Just tiring.

The scope thing on the ground is a collimator, its basically a grid inside that you can see through the guns sights. So when you pick up displacement it tracks it for you and you correct it with that. Like aiming posts but more accurate. That's for shooting iron sights, we have digital fire control system, which gets the data from the fire direction center, and computes it by gps and everything else telling us where to shoot. And bassically you don't have to do anything other than turn the wheel until it tells you to stop. But if that breaks you use "Iron sights"
>>
>>31788919
Well, if it isn't broken...
Actually, we still have an emergency sight in service that dates back to... Hold on to your butts... 1888. The thing is made of copper and really would make a nice museum piece, I've never used it but it's still officially in service.
>>
>>31789021

>>
>>31788991
Neat.
It's a shame, but our CAESAR doesn't have any back-up system if the firing computer is out. The only sight you can put on it is, well, for direct fire.
Otherwise it's either GPS or inertial guidance (in case GPS can't be relied upon).
>>
>>31789044

>>
>>31789072
>That's shitty, does your GPS go down often?
Nah, it's not really that. 99% of the time we use the GPS unless we specifically train with the inertial system. It's just that doctrinally, we have to be able to continue being effective if for whatever reason the GPS system goes down, the satellites are shot off, it's jammed... Or even if the US don't approve of something we do and decide to turn the off switch.
It's basically a contingency that results in a computerized gyroscope that's worth a sportscar.

External comms going through a proper comms station, right?
It's not about encrypting, it's to minimize the amount of radiation coming from your site, protect it from jamming and SIGINT.
We do the same in the FDF, but we're not suffering from Wunderwaffen-syndrome so we've got proper field phones instead of F-35s. Takes fucking forever building the cable lines in thigh-deep snow.

This may be more of a doctrinal issue but eh

I was recently looking into the balance of forces in the baltic area and noticed Finland has relatively fuckhuge amounts of artillery in active service. More towed pieces than any other European country and more SPGs than Britain for example.
Why would they have such a disproportionate artillery section for a country with such a small military? It doesn't seem like absolute junk either rather than modernised pieces with good ammo etc.
Of course the balance is still towards towed stuff which is, as far as I know, kinda outdated and more of a single-shot weapon due to counterbattery.

You will however spend 1/5 to 1/3 of your next 20 years overseas if you plan on going career, good luck trying to make a family. If you want a desk job after your stint in the NG, pick an NG desk job, preferably finance, and don't reenlist.

That depends, how sure is your desk job after school, if you're getting a legit degree, and just want something fun to do one weekend a month, I say go for it. 13B is a fun gig if you're in the right kind of unit. Do your research, find out what kind of Arty units your state has, try and find someone who isn't a recruiter to see what the unit is actually like. The Guard has some good benefits, the health insurance is cheap and really good, you might get some student loan repayment too. Be prepared to deploy though, not many happening now, but it's always a possibility, and if you stay in very long, it is a certainty.

Any rocket arty guys itt? When you served, how long, where were/are you stationed at.

75th FIRES brigade Fort Sill. I got fucked bros but if I could do my job I'd be happy.

it doesnt make me feel better. I used to be mechanized, and my old paladin was never down as much as these worthless 777a2's. ever. there's currently not a single gun across my battery that can fire. all deadlined from either brakes, failed hydraulics, or fucked DFCS.

towed is okay. 119 is an awesome little bird of a piece.

i loath and despise the m777a2 specifically. they're a delicate princess of a howitzer and i fucking hate it.

When or where was artillery, possibly just the concept, first implemented and used in warfare?

Who would you personally consider to have perfected the operation of artillery? Country or General, if you'd like.

For the longest time I had no idea that the M119 was a modified version of the L118.

difficult terrain with very limited infrastructure would be a slow push for potential invaders

that was one of the biggest problems for russja when they attacked the finns, the trainrails were blown up repeatedly and there were barely any roads, combine that with an insane amount of marshes and lakes in general you've got some problems ahead

Does the finnish army really think they can fire for this long without being wiped out by counter-battery from the Russians just like in Donbass?

itis the samething with Leopard 2 gun, where the L44 means the gun is 120mm x 44 and the L55 means the gun is 120mm x 55.

>>31807379
the US army uses an israeli heavy mortar and the Us marines use a french heavy mortar
>>
>>31808514
How long does counter-battery take to arrive?
>>
>>31808593
Depends on, but with good command & control and a good CB radar, within 5 - 15 minutes
>>
>>31808599
So with things the Russians lack, there's an extra ~7 minutes left for those artillerymen to get the fuck out of dodge.
>>
>>31795163
It's simply because the rest of Western European militaries aren't at all prepared for symmetric total war. Germany is a fucking joke, the UK plays around with power projecting and France just does what it does. Most NATO countries just rely on American superiority and focus their militaries on NATO operations in the third world.

I want to buy and learn how to use a mortar, they seem cool. Anyone know how to triangulated a firing mortars location?

Also where can I learn about general arty stuff like how to aim?
>>

1 - 2 min if opponents are ready
>>
>>31786665
Question, whats that little piece of metal off the barrel for? Looks like a mini bayonet. Something to do with securing and towing?
>>
>>31808514
Live firing excersises just have shitloads of regulation so they arent allowed to fire as fast as they could. Getting the fuck out of the position is major part of the training

Radar jamming? How are nets useful btw? Does it make it harder for aircraft to spot you?

>How are nets useful btw?
Camouflage, harder to see there's anything there.
Multispectral camo nets block IR, radar etc.
Makes identification a hell of a lot more difficult. Hard to see what exactly you're looking at when it's just a roundish clump.
>>
>>31808593
Depends entirely on the enemy and their preparedness.

VII Corps in the first Gulf War were able to get their MLRS to open fire on Iraqi targets before the first splash.
>>
>>31808709
Makes it harder to spot and even in desrt the net prevents aircraft from identifying the things under it.
>>
Are automatic mortars a thing? I always wondered about that, if its possible and practical
>>
>>31808881
Semi-automatic, sure.

Just no. It takes more than that just to input the cordinates and lay the gun. Even if you are prepared

>>31808881
Yes. There's stuff like Dragonfire and its variant that was proposed and tested where you drop it off on a mountain or something and a FO feeds it coordinates and it fires until it's empty.

I'm certain I have it, I'm already employed with the company, and they hired me on to build me up while I went to school for computers. My plan was basically to join NG for that reason, have something to do some weekends, and I'm not afraid to deploy some times. The company I'm with is pretty flexible with servicemen. I'll do my research and try to reach out to any NG's I can find. Thanks anon.
>>31795420
Thankfully, I plan on doing the job mentioned above alongside guard service, so I'm not super scared of having a fucked up career, aside from maybe some tinnitus and shitty hearing.
>>
>>31808982
not for any modern system
>>
>>31809356
What sort of super fast systems have you been working with? Most still uses voice radio and are requied to check the cordinates several times to make sure things dont fuck up.

The time it takes for a CB radar to calculate the position, transfer it to company/battalion/brigade command and for them to decide wether to fire or not, then to send a fire mission to the artillery will take more than 1 - 2 minutes.

Perfect thread for this.

Bored 35F here, coming up on the possibility of changing my PMOS. I wanna do something with Field Artillery. What 13-series MOS will help me kill things, live like an ape, and have some good stories?

And before anybody lectures me about keeping the good life, etc, I'm bored and just want to do something cool in the next war. My SGM says I could keep 35F as a secondary MOS and renew my clearance.
