These are my boots for general wear, at the ranch, at work, and at campus. I usually wear them unbloused. I think they look best with straight fit jeans.

As for trench foot and fungal infections--I've never had any problems. I always wear wool socks, changing them out frequently, and following basic hygiene. A dry foot is a happy foot.

Mechanic here, I've been using Blue Steel boots for about 1.5 years and they haven't let me down. Half-laced, wear them 9 hours a day, 5 days a week.

My main problem is finding decent socks that don't get holes in them.

For my taller, water proof non insulated boots I have some Danners.
Mine are around 8 years old. May need resoled soon.
My dry country, desert boots are some just above the ankle Vasques. No goretex. Have been pleased with them so far.
In Have a pair of cabelas brand 12 inch insulated boots for cold weather. 10 and below. I use smart wool liners and a heavier sick for the cold. Works very well.
I'm pretty sold on mostly only wool socks when it comes to boot use.

Fungal infections can vary from person to person. It depends on skin type, metabolism/diet, shape of feet etc. I think some people can benefit from more breathable shoes, but I for one get it even in mesh shoes, unless I dry and clean very thoroughly.
You really have to make an effort to get trench foot though, so that shouldn't be a problem.
