A wooden bat is heavy and slow. If you have time and space to wind up and smack the hell out of them they're in trouble. But look at medieval flanged maces, they were refined over hundreds of years for close quarters melee combat and they're much smaller and lighter, for a reason. It's all about where the weight of the weapon balances and the shape of the impact surface.
