Why was the Vietnam war hated? Was it because of the media or just the low morale of the soldiers?
>>
>>31774951
media and stupid president

soldier moral was still high enough to keep carrying on and despite what the media was showing they was far less civilian casualties and war crimes done by US soldiers in vietnam than in WW2

even if the US soldiers went away from vietnam, south vietnam with the help given from the CIA would have been able to push back the north without too much trouble

>forcing people to fight a war, slave soldiers
>fighting a war for no reason, protecting people who don't give a fuck "not our fight"
>limited warfare, can't bomb this, can't do that. *gets killed because of this*
>military industry complex making a killing, love the war and how limited it is, good money.
>fruitless

It was a a total and complete waste. Just like Iraq, just like Afghanistan.

fun fact: US draft more people percentage wise during WW2 than it is during Vietnam War.

War is still war with people dying in a variety of interesting ways. That being said, people back home don't have the stomach to handle such 'atrocities' that war brings. They thought wars was just people dying on both sides but not as gruesome.

Take what you want from that, some things are just not meant for public eyes.

Probably because we didn't need to be there. Even Iraq had a better reason, and I'm an Afghanistan/Iraq vet.

Believe it or not when a bunch of men are pulled from their lives involuntary and then die overseas for some bullshit, John Q and Mrs. America doesn't like that very much.

heres a breakdown by some guy online:

In WWII, males between 18 and 64 were required to register, but the selections were limited by executive order on December 5, 1942 from from 21–45 to 18–38. Assuming the citation (George Q. Flynn, The Draft, 1940–1973) is correct, 50 million men from 18 to 45 were registered. The Selective Service statistics page gives the total inductions during WWII as 10,110,104, which would indicate that the percentage would be somewhere around 20% were drafted based on registration.

By the Vietnam war, the draft age had changed to 18-26 by the Selective Service Act. The draft pool was around 27 million (apparently lifted verbatim from a paragraph from this paper), and per the Selective Service page linked above, there were 1,857,304 inductions during Vietnam. Note that Morris gives the number as 2,215,000 - this may reflect a difference in start and end dates used but they are fairly close. This would indicate that roughly 7-9% of the draft pool was conscripted.

Most, if not all, of these drafted people serves in rear echelon units. These units on occasion are overrun but that is normal in a chaotic fluid situations that is war.

This makes perfect sense as those that are forced to do something against their will or moral code tend to fail almost completely at said task. Hence, why they are stationed in rear echelon units while those people that 'volunteered' (read: professional soldiers) to be there are the ones doing most, if not all, of the fighting.

No winning condition without getting into war with nuclear-armed China and maybe the Soviets.

It was a more left wing time than today
Hippies and commies running rampant
nigs raping/rioting in the streets, fragging white officers..
Never did any offensive operations, and never attacked the supply lines for the NVA

Totally pointless war based on a lie, only happened because the US gave vietnam back to the french after WW2.
Same thing as the Korean war, where the US split Korea with the Soviets, then told them they wouldn't defend the south.

Because we were the ones who instigated it and lost it.

American civilians didn't think that we had a worthy cause to attack Vietnam when they did nothing to us compared to Japan in WW2 where they attacked Pearl Harbor.

Back then there was the whole ideology wars that America and Russia began against each other once WW2 ended and the cold war began. American government heads thought that if more and more countries started following the communism ideology that eventually America would become Communism itself. It was one reason why Fidel Castro in Cuba was seen as such a threat by the C.I.A because it was communist.

Add on to reasons like restricting amount of force allowed to be used (President LBJ specifically and personally choose sectors to bomb very carefully to avoid pissing off the Russians in getting involved) and of course your giving yourself a handicap. Even if we won the war what happens then? Sure, Vietnam wouldn't be communist but would their ideology have caused other countries surrounding it to change theirs? possibly not.
