It resembles a Bolter from 40K. It's just a visual thing.
For a weapon in the real world to work like a Bolter it would be: Mag fed, two-stage gyrojet, armor-piercing grenade launcher. The shell has a kicker charge that pushes it out the barrel and then another charge that propels it to high speed. The shell hits the target, penetrates, and then explodes inside, sending the innards of the Heretic/Xenos/Greenskin flying everywhere.
