What the fuck would that even be used for? It looks like it's just a horribly inefficient, overly complicated, and more difficult to produce spear designed by someone who thought a normal spear wasn't edgy enough.

I think it's unlikely that unsharpened spikes on a mancatcher are going to kill anyone. But they'd sure as shit hurt and if someone has one of those wrapped around your neck or leg and it hurts like a motherfucker you're going to stop.

Bayonets generally aren't sharpened either, but no one is going to say those aren't effective at killing someone.

Surprised no one has said the original use for that which was dismounting knights on horses. A knight on the ground is next to useless and the armor he was wearing essentially becomes a coffin as daggers are inserted into the gaps in the armor such as the armpit or neck or vision slots in the helmet.

It was a great equalizer for a foot soldier who has next to no means of bringing down a knight after the slings/arrows/bolts/pikemen failed to stop them.

Same thing, but both wrong. If it had a shoulder thing that goes up it would be the assault rifle, and it would only be the AK74 (hell of a shotgun btw) if the clip was longer. The short clip and no shoulder thing mean that this is an SKS (shoot/kill/stab) that was designed by the Soviets in the late 1800s.

Sounds like an oversized Swede, almost. Apparently it's low pressure enough they could get away with it.

That is a complete and total myth. Full plate is like 55 pounds total all spread across the body. Most modern soldiers wear that in a single backpack.

good stuff

>>31771417
My kit for being mounted is pretty much the same as being dis mounted.

On ground I'm still in a cotton tunic, padded cotton gambeson, chain mail hauberk (riveted), and scatter plate. I have a heavy leather belt that holds a spade axe on my left along with my sword and a dagger on my right. That is just my core.

My hands are cotton lined leather mits with chain overlay. My left hand is strapped into the heater shield.

My legs are cotton under garments, with leather hosens and chain mail overlay. My shins are covered with scatter plate that attach to the knee guard that attachs to the breast plate. My boots are hiking boots because even medieval reenactors need some comfort.

Then for my head I have a padded cotton coif with a chain mail coif on top and a full face helmet on top of that. All of it's strapped on good and taught so that if I take a hit it wont rattle, shake, or come loose.

All that along with a few odds and ends adds some weight and discomfort. I can just say this right now. If I end up on the ground or god fucking forbid my back then I'm not getting up without help. Now this isn't 100% historically accurate but it is a well done historical interpretation which is all you can really hope for in medieval reenacting.

TL;DR knight on the ground is a dead man waiting.

TL;DR my horses name is Sharleteo

Civil war .58 caliber coffee mill gun.

It was essentially a hand-cranked version of a modern day chain gun.

Apparently ol' honest abe witnessed a test firing and liked it so much he ordered 50 of them fielded, but they were rarely used due to commanders belief that they were not reliable and wasted ammunition.

Ehhh why not? If your side has total advantage on the battlefield you most probably whip out mancatchers and go easy with your poleaxes to take as much knights as prisoners as possible. Ransoms, your know. Total war in Europe is later invention.

I think each chamber there has its own pan under the brass cover. The cover might even spring away on its own as you pull the trigger, such existed for single shot weapons.

Another solution is the one taken by Collier's design (patented in 1818), which had a single pan, but re-filled it automatically from a small reservoir in the frizzen.

>>31776661
If your side has total domination then the other side is quite likely to bugger off in a hurry. Whipping out the mancatchers also require you to have bought them in the first place, brought them along over most likely months of marching around, and then you need to pause and retrieve them without loosing your advantage in the process, or having the enemy run off.

On the other hand, those of value will probably be wearing a good amount of quite effective armour, so you can get quite forceful about suggesting they surrender without all too many of them expiring. Even for the more poorly equipped fighters, the vast majority of deaths were people ran down and butchered when they routed, so simply try to avoid doing that to them.
>>
>>31776804
>If your side has total domination then the other side is quite likely to bugger off in a hurry.
So you chase them.

>Whipping out the mancatchers also require you to have bought them in the first place, brought them along over most likely months of marching around, and then you need to pause and retrieve them without loosing your advantage in the process, or having the enemy run off.
No problem. This why i have henchmen you know, to carry my spare lances and other shit around.

>On the other hand, those of value will probably be wearing a good amount of quite effective armour, so you can get quite forceful about suggesting they surrender without all too many of them expiring.
But they can object they imprisonment and slash longsword at anyone who tries to detain them without care about their health so you better get best tools for that job to reduce risk during such approach.

You can see more photos of this, hmm, beauty on the museum page: https://collections.royalarmouries.org/object/rac-object-40790.html

"The axe-head with long fluke is hollow and contains five barrels the muzzles concealed by a hinged cover forming the edge of the axe-blade. The topmost barrel is ignited by a matchlock fitted on the left side, the mechanism concealed by a brass plate in the form of a lion, the second by a wheellock the mechanism of which occupies most of the outer surface of the axe-head on the opposite side, the remaining three barrels by a hand held match as is also a sixth barrel forming the handle or haft. There is a tubular extension to the pan of the wheellock intended to hold a length of match which would be ignited by the flash of the priming and then wihdrawn to ignite the remaining barrels. On the left side is a belt or saddle-hook. Traces of blueing remain on parts of the wheel-lock mechanism".

I have grave news, friendo. You are retarded, but don't worry - we still love you.

You'll have to go back a few thousand years before you can pick more than 1 of these options.

interestingly, it's really easy to see through maille
Though that picture seems to be just chains

What is this? To me, it looks perfect for thrusting into appendages to hook on. Am I right or is it for something completely different?
>>
>>31768564

That isn't their fruit, it belongs to the local lord and either you disperse them with the weighty butt of your mancatcher, draw your blade, or die a cuck and have the lord's knights ride them down because they're not real people.
>>
>>31794233
you're correct
>>
>>31776661

Because I'm a tired peasant and I'm not carrying that shit. Do I need to chop something? Oh good, I have a halberd. Do I need to stab something? Oh good, I have a halberd. Do I need to whack someone's skull with something blunt? Oh good, I have the butt of my halberd. Do I need to drag a knight off a horse...shit, better get my mancatcher! OH NO WAIT I HAVE A HALBERD WITH A FUCKING HOOK ON THE BACK AND IF THAT DOESN'T WORK I CAN COLD-COCK HIS HORSE WITH AN AXE BLADE ON A SIX-TO-EIGHT-FOOT STICK.

WW1 is the war I'd never want to be in, ever, not even a "quiet" front. Get fucked up without even getting to your section of the trench

The cylinder probably cams forward and seals against the barrel.
