I just bought a Mossberg 500 for general purpose use (home defense, recreational, shtf)

This is my first shotgun. What was your first shotgun? If you don't have one, what are thinking about getting?

Thinking about both the mossberg 500/maverick 88. Can't seem to find any Remington 870s in my area.
I want a shotgun because honestly I don't think getting an AR has ever been worth it in CA.
Or any semi auto for that matter since we're cucked into 10 round only mags.

Why did you get a shotgat OP? Home defense or tactically tactical shotgunning for tactics?
>>
>>31763144
Oh I've also been looking at those Dickinson shotguns big 5 has. I've heard they're not bad for what they are. And shotguns are hard to fuck up anyways.
>>
A Mossberg 500 I inherited. I've had it for a decade and I've never actually shot the thing. I probably should do something about that, I mean, my front yard is a shooting range.

I traded a shitty Chinese sks for a Mossberg 835 ulti-mag badass deal imo. But I need some advice, should I saw off the barrel to 18 inches or just buy a new one(I'm having trouble finding an 18 inch barrel).
>>
>>31763301
I should say the barrel is 24 inches currently
>>
First shotgun was a Remington 1100.. I shoot skeet and sporting clay and I love it
>>
>>31763301
Pretty sure the 590A1 18.5 inch barrel will fit it.

When I was like 12, for christmas my grandparents got my 14 year old brother a break open .410 shotty and they got me one of those bead kits that you assemble and then iron into shapes.

I was super, super pissed. I know they didn't owe me shit for christmas, but I was fucking insulted.
>>
>>31763090
My first was a Remington 870 express. I used it for sporting clays and the like. Then I bought a mossberg 500 hoke defense one
I like my mossy better

Now I own
>14" 500
>20" 590
>24" 930
>18" H&R Single shit 12ga

It's a well rounded team of shotties. I love them all to death.
Eventually I'd like to get an M4, super 90, spas, and stuff like that. Mostly to bolster the meme element to my collection.
>>
>>31763474
My dad gave me a H&R pardner 12 for Christmas when I was like 13.
First shotgun I bought was a Savage 720
>>
My first shotgun was a Stoger Condor that my father bought me when I turned 13 and joined my school's trap/skeet team. Im 30 now and still use it regularly for sport shooting.

Have a New Haven for turkey, a Mossberg 500 for home, and looking at getting a KSG soon.
>>
The only Mossberg or remingshit I'd buy would be a 590a1 or 870 police/wingmaster

I much rather get a benelli supernova if buying new

There are some semi autos I've had my eye on though, like the Beretta 1301 and various benellis/franchise like the m4, m1, Vinci, affinity

Maverick 88 in 12 ga

I have a ritual whenever I go shooting.
>clean up for the day before we all go home
>clean up all our shotgun shells
>any unfired shell we find must be shot out of the single shot 18" by the person who finds it.

Yeah that gun weighs maybe 4 pounds and I found a 3" turkey load once.
>>
>>31763553
Go 590. Seriously consider if that fuckhueg barrel will really be used to its full potential.

Also no metal trigger guard, BUT if somehow you manage to break the plastic one? You can always buy the metal one.
>>

>>
Are there any attachments for a home defense shotgun that aren't a waste of money or potential impediment?
>>

Is the 590 just like the a1 but without the heavy barrel? Also considering between the 18" and the 20", home defense is good, but I want it to be an overall gun as well
>>

my 870 was actually really solid for range and clay, but it was an '01. 870's have very smooth bolt and pump actions and the pull feels pretty short. I could almost fire as fast as a semi-auto with it and the 28" barrel was great for outdoors. The load gate also was never really an issue because it was pretty light. If you want an 870 I'd recommend you look at competitor models. The cheaper ones have really stiff actions. CZ's are pretty good right now and they have specialty versions.

A lever action is not what you want for clay or trap but it could be fun, and the ak pattern shotguns work better for 3 gun competition.

Even my '01 was a little rough in materials and finish, and the sun of a bitch rusts if air gets on it. My friends had several Expresses in those years that could not handle certain brands of ammo or 3" brass because the extractors sucked. I would just avoid the Express. The Wingmaster is brilliant. My friend has a 1979 Wingmaster for sale for $279 that completely outclasses the new models and I'm shocked nobody has bought it yet.

Depending on what GS, you can find a used mossy 500 for as low as $175. One has to search though.

it would be easy to replace with a bead since the rear is screwed on and all you need to do is swap the barrel out.
that said the ghostring model is like $100 bucks more than the bead sight so it would be better to buy a gun with what you wanted installed from the start.
replacement barrels are pricey too/

Debating between the Benelli supernova tactical and the Mossberg 500 tactical. The "comfortech" looks nice, but I'd rather have 6+1 than 4+1 for the difference of half an inch of barrel.
>>
My first shotgun ended up being the fedora king of mossbergs, the 590DA1.

Allegedly Mossberg made these because cops were ND'ing their shotguns too much since they were too used to sa/da pistols, so the DA1 has a double action-ish trigger, with over a half inch of travel and a 9-10 pound pull.

I found 2 cop trade ins at a pawn shop for 300 each, and it's still a heavy barrel A1

My first was a 28'' barrel Maverick 88, worked like a charm and was a great first shotgun, I knew I would love shotguns but I had no idea how hooked it would get me. I sold it because it was a little massive for my local woods. Now I have...

Norinco 1887
Boito Single Shot 12 Gauge
Maverick 88 18.5'' with pistol grip
JC Higgins Model 10
ASIL Bulldog 12 Gauge, Turkish Gun
Stevens Model 520

I've also had a Norinco 13'' coach gun and a UTS15, both of which I liked. I'm getting another Gen 4 UTS some day for sure. I probably have another five kinds of shotguns I'd like to buy at the moment.

Cut up shotgun cards from your favorite source or you could cut up a shotgun shell holding bandolier or sling but they aren't as nice as cards which are usually made from thicker, stiffer nylon.
I recently bought some metal shotgun cards and am trying those out. I like them better than nylon. $10 on sale and they come in a 2 shell and 4 shell sections that can be joined together for 6 total. I have the 4 hole on the left side and the 2 hole on the forend. They have rubber grippers inside to prevent movement, which I like as my elastic loops were getting kinda loose.

Bought an old Brazilian F.I.E. 20g, single shot several months ago. Fun gun, might need a new spring for the firing pin though. Plan on buying a 500 sometime in the future.
