I'm a bit anally frustrated that even bally russkie can show off his aircraft carriers (albiet belching oily smoke) and we only have an LHD. Still, HMS Queen Liz is looking pretty nice.

>>31763176
She'll sail to Portsmouth in early 2017.
First F-35 flights will be done by a British aircraft from the carrier are in 2018.
After that will be a matter of steadily ramping up every year with a lot of test deployments and exercises between UK and US.
24 British jets for a "normal" operational deployed airwing by 2023.
USMC have been invited over to also be on the carrier before and during that time to help it practice with greater on board numbers while deliveries are still incoming. (Captain Jerry Kyd has confirmed that depending on how much the USMC wants to send, we could see anything between 36 and "almost double that" F-35s on her at any given time, seems she can carry a shitload more than we thought originally.)
You'll see the planes on her soon. I can't wait for the visual.
The second one is almost structurally complete too. It'll be floated out very soon after the first leaves for Portsmouth.

I imagine, if the first deployment takes place in 2020, you may see one squadron of 12 British F-35s and 1-2 squadrons of 12 Marine F-35s (depending on if they want 24 or 36 aircraft). Then maybe one more like that, then by 2023 two British squadrons with maybe another Marine one for more numbers depending on circumstances.

Was this things hull composite? Or just the deck/bridge structure?
I wonder what happens when it hits a submerged container or other debris with that bow...
Was there when this thing was launched, I'd read a lot about its stealth properties, composite this that and the other, special paint and so on.
I remember wanting to touch it, see it up close, so I just walked up and did. I was scratching the hull with my nails, feeling the surface texture of it and tapping it. After about 10 seconds one of the guys guarding it came up behind me with his weapon pointed at my feet and yelled I couldn't be there...
Seemed a bit extreme for a curious 15 year old but what do I know. Remains my only interaction with any kind of military to this day.

>>31765486
> Most nations havent adopeted culture from their invaders thru history.
>>31766919
It's "welded on" because the ship is designed to be modular for catapults when the budget ever becomes available (Likely not anytime soon).
It being designed like that means it's very easy to remove, as you just take it off and thats it flat and ready. Just makes it a little ugly at the end of an otherwise fine looking ship.
>>31768167
>be modular for catapults
Its to give a few parking spots along side the ramp, like on the old Invincible class and the Centaur class refits.
>>31768245
On this pic only the 3 first F-35 can get out of parking without needing to move the rest.
I hope for the RN it's just a pic with no respect for actual dimensions of the deck, or this spot won't be used much...
Litterally zero point to put these planes here instead of packing them in the hangar where obviously you have to pull out the first planes before getting those in the background out on the deck.

>>31773591
Since WW2 we haven't had a direct fight between blue water navies. The closest we came was the Falklands (the Argentines actually had some of the same ships as the RN), but they returned to port due to the threat of submarines after the ARA General Belgrano was sunk. Most other combat has involved small missile boats (like in the yom kippur war)
That said, in East Asia especially we are seeing a large quantity of large surface warships procured (especially by China), and disputes in the South & East China Seas. So who knows.
>>31764502
USN policy is to stay out of reach of shore based artillery and they are working towards being out of reach of shore based missiles. So ship to shore connectors. Their ships have to be transoceanic, so they are large and the material on board is valuable. An LST sunk in the last hundred meters from shore is a loss. Losing a much larger vessel could be a tragedy.
Additionally, grounding an LST may put it out of action. The RAN LST Tobruk was only beached once a year for traning as it then required docking to ensure its structural integrity.
